Opening Night for The Grant Park Music Festival at Millennium Park + Fireworks!

  • Jay Pritzker Pavilion, Millennium Park

N Michigan Ave & E Washington St, Chicago, IL (map)

    41.883209 -87.624504

  • We will be sitting in the front North-East corner of the lawn.
  • (This is a Free Concert, the Concert starts at 6:30)

"The 2013 Season opens with Carlos Kalmar conducting Tchaikovsky's passionate Fourth Symphony. Captivating young violinist Stefan Jackiw makes his Festival debut with Mozart's Turkish Concerto."

Come experience the Grant Park Orchestra at the spectacular Frank Gehry designed Pritzker Pavilion. During these events wine consumption is allowed in the park, since everything is better with wine, why not bring a bottle, or two, and perhaps a nosh.

Following the concert several of us are planning to head over to Navy Pier to view the Fireworks, which launch at 9:30, adjacent to the Beer Garden.

Hi All, a bit late to the conversation. Sorry the event was cancelled last evening but it was out of everyone's control. I was looking forward to meeting many of you and hearing some great music but there will be plenty more concerts since summer is just starting. Looking foward to the next one!

About 10 min. ago WFMT radio announced that the concert was indeed canceled due to the inclement weather conditions. The classical listening is still good. Enjoy, stay safe and dry!

    Dear yet unknown friends;
Regretfully, I am canceling as well. However, as they say there is always a silver lining, I have a bit a good news for all.
In case, the concert bravely proceed as scheduled without us, we can all tune into 98.7 FM radio WFMT for a live simulcast. That way you can stay safe and still enjoy the classical music!
Here is to the good listening! Hip, Hip Hurray!

Just received this message on facebook:

    Grant Park Music Festival

Just a reminder that tonight's concert will be taking place at 6:30PM. We will update Facebook, Twitter and gpmf.org in the event that severe weather affects concert time.

    Hope this helps.

Is everyone still planning on showing up today to see the performance even with a 70% chance of rain and thunderstorm? I don't mind getting wet and watching the concert under the rain but want to make sure the concert itself will still go on?

ABC news made an announcement that it is still going on. The weather should be clearer after 3pm. The storm may change course. I think we should play it accordingly. It is a beautiful, romantic classical program, it would be a shame if it's cancelled.

  • Pam

In light of the forecast has there been any change?

    1 · June 12, 2013

    • Josh

I'm not going to cancel the meetup, even with the current forecast of 100% chance of rain at 7 pm. The concert itself rarely cancels, as the stage is covered.

  • Matthew R P.

Will this event be cancelled in the event of rain?

    June 10, 2013

    • Josh

No, I don't see any reason to cancel the meetup due to bad weather, as there are over 100 rsvps, and I suspect some of those are very "hearty" classical music lovers that may wish to attend the performance, even if it is raining! Also see Steve's comment above.

    Looking forward to this :)

    June 10, 2013

  • Steve

NOTE: >>> This is NOT a comment on the Meet Up itself <<< The orchestra/stage area is well covered for the performers. Only extreme weather (strong winds with rain or lightening) would cancel the CONCERT itself. Very unlikely. There is no covered seating - maybe the front rows would stay dry. If rain is predicted, bring an umbrella just in case. You can sit through a performance in the rain - if you like :).

Hi all. My son needs a new Violin... New to Chicago, could you recommend someone of know of anyone who is selling a Violin? Thanks

Will look for the group at the front of the lawn at the north east corner. Will someone have a MU sign?
We bring our own blanket/lawn chairs, right? If bringing wine, don't forget plastic glasses and a corkscrew. Are people bringing munchies to share?

I'm looking forward to this event. Thanks for organizing.

For the MU location: See Josh's comment below.
This is a GREAT concert. Tchaikovsky's 4th Symphony and Mozart's 5th Violin Concerto. Both are instantly enjoyable standards for those new to classical music. Bring your friends !
