Twilight of the Romantics:

Strauss, Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky
Sunday, September 29, 2013, 7:00 pm

Pick-Staiger Hall in Evanston

Scott Speck, Conductor; Kuang Hao Huang, Piano
Strauss's Don Juan
Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 3
Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring

Experience the whirlwind of Richard Strauss’ bravura as he bursts upon the world stage with the story of Don Juan. The Chicago Philharmonic’s new artistic director Scott Speck drives bows to move at blurring speeds, woodwinds’ fingers to fly over their keys, brasses to call out in youthful exuberance, and percussion to explode, representing this ultimate Romantic figure. Next, accomplished soloist Kuang Hao Huang performs the rarely heard, one-movement Piano Concerto No. 3 of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Discover this lesser-known masterwork of one of the world’s most beloved composers. Then we celebrate the centennial of Igor Stravinsky’s landmark ballet The Rite of Spring, which changed the history of music forever. One could argue that with the opening soaring bars of a solo bassoon, the Romantic Era of music ended then and there. As a special treat, the Agnieszka Laska Dancers, a ground-breaking modern dance troupe from Oregon, will pay tribute to the original choreography by performing their interpretation of selected scenes. Parking is free.

There are plenty of great reasturants in downtown Evanston. Send me an email if interested in catching something to eat before the concert and we can arrange how, where and when to meet.

Thanks! Who is hosting this meet-up?

Good question! As the point person for the Philharmonic that day, I will be quite busy with my "official" duties. I suppose I could host, but I am not even sure how that works. Could we discuss a bit? 708.860.6435. Or I can call you. Let me know. Thanks!
