On Friday, July 19, 2013 at 7 pm The Smithsonian Freer|Sackler Galleries will present A Chinese Ghost Story, part of the 18th Annual Made in Hong Kong Film Festival!
Location: Freer Gallery of Art, Meyer Auditorium
Based on a famous tale by Pu Songling, this supernatural fantasy stars Leslie Cheung as a traveling tax collector. While taking shelter in an abandoned temple, he meets and falls in love with a beautiful woman—who happens to be a ghost. Blending traditional Chinese legends with Hollywood-style horror, martial arts action, and a classic story of star-crossed lovers, this highly entertaining film “remains a vital showcase of our cinema’s madcap inventiveness. It’s like a sensual Evil Dead romance!” (Edmund Lee, Time Out Hong Kong). One of the Hong Kong Film Archives’ “100 Must-See Hong Kong Movies.” Print courtesy of the Hong Kong Film Archive, Leisure and Cultural Services Department. (Dir.: Ching Siu-tung, Hong Kong, 1987, 98 min., Cantonese with English and Chinese subtitles)
