Happy New Year 2013, Members!
Last year I had a meeting with the Library of Congress, Geography and Map Division. They were very gracious and accommodating. We have a unique opportunity to a tour of the G&M Division to see special, old and rare maps of China.
A couple of years ago, the group went to the LOC to see the famous 1600 Matteo Ricci map which was a huge hit. The Ricci map was on loan as part of a traveling exhibit but no longer there.
However, the LOC has its own treasured collection of rare maps of China. We will be given a tour and talk by one of the expert staff. The tour will take approximately one (1) hour. The G&M Division is only during weekdays.
***We will meet inside at the main entrance on Independence Avenue. The James Madison Bldg. has modern architecture, white columns and very large. It is across the street from the older Thomas Jefferson Bldg. Take elevator to B02, meet at GLOBE outside of Room B02. Red dots will be handed out to designate you are with the group. Please do not be late.****
***You may not bring large bags into the Map Division. If you have a large handbag, ruchsack or briefcase, the LOC G&M Division will provide a locker for you. Small handbags or fanny packs are best for carrying your personal belongings if you don't want them locked up. The LOC has requested you come early and go to Room B02 to take care of your large bag beforehand so you will not hold up the group once the tour starts.***
Afterwards, there is an opportunity to have lunch at a Chinese restaurant 1/2 block away on Pennsylvania Avenue or catch up with friends at the LOC cafeteria.
Members are welcomed to spread the word and invite family and friends.
PLEASE UPDATE YOUR RSVP SO WE KNOW HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL BE TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THIS FUN AND UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY:)!
