What are your favorite Chinese dishes and foods?

I love Cantonese and Sichuan dishes, especially those delicious shrimp dumplings (har gau?) and "gambian siji dou."

How would you describe your level of Chinese? (Eg it's my native language OR I don't speak it OR I learned some dialect from my family but little Mandarin, OR I can speak a few words, simple conversations, etc.)

I can speak a few words, but have a special talent for forgetting words only a few minutes from learning them.

What kind of events and activities would you be interested in? What would you like to do at our events?

What could this group provide for you that no other Meetup could?

Native speakers who have a patient tolerance for challenged learners like me.

Where did you grow up? How did you learn Chinese? Tell us your story.

After growing up in the US, and living in the Virgin Islands and in Brazil, I went to China for the first time in 2000. I have returned to teach English on and off since then, and have amassed an embarrassingly small vocabulary over the years.

Introduction

Hi, I am a retired university teacher who has spent the last several years (on and off) teaching English at universities in Guangzhou, Suzhou, and Nanjing, China. I was never able to achieve my desired level of Mandarin language skill, so here I am!

What Richard is saying about this Meetup Group

I look forward to attending future meetups, and will get more out of it when I have a better base in mandarin. Stay tuned.
