Mar. 31 Skype Chinese Hour: "FAQ 16 - Are you free Saturday night?"

  • Mar 31, 2012 · 8:00 PM

Invitations. Those (sometime) wonderful things to receive can be really hard to give out - especially when you don't have the right words.

From asking someone (Chinese) out to having people over for a party, there is asking, and there is asking. Let's explore the best ways to inquire - and entice.

How do you say, "would you like to check out that concert/movie/store/restaurant with me?" or, "are you down for some beer?", or, "is there a place you'd like to try?"

After we are done with asking, we have to learn - that's right - how to turn things down. And let's see if I can put this politely: there is no rejecting Chinese people!" (I know because I am one. :) )

There is a world of cultural humor in that, and we will have to appreciate it along with learning the words. Come and find out how you can be both grammatically correct and socially savvy.

To join, log on to Skype by 7:55 p.m. Request the contact "moreopenmind"(New York) (you won't be able to see me on) and message, "Chinese Workshop", and I will conference-call everyone at 8 p.m. The Skype Meetup is planned for an hour. Skype is perfect for practicing listening and speaking. Don't miss it!
