THE BOTANY OF INDULGENCE: Temptation of Chocolate
Cacao (Theobroma cacao) has been used for centuries as a beverage and as the delicacy we know as chocolate. From pre-Columbian Mayan and Aztec cultures that used cacao to European chocolate houses and the mass-produced commercial products of today, chocolate has a long storied past.
Learn the natural history of cacao and its many current and historic uses as well as the sustainable way of producing chocolate. Discover the neurobiology of theobromine, the active ingredient of cacao that is responsible for the feeling of 'being in love' after consuming it. Sample several varieties and forms of cacao.
Katherine Herrera, MS, is a research assistant for Micronesian projects at the Institute of of Economic Botany at the Botanical Garden.

Wish I could go--since it's the Saturday before Valentine's Day I'll be hard at work at Roni-Sue's Chocolates. I invite everyone to stop by the Essex St. Market on the LES after the meet-up to enjoy one of my handmade truffles--on the house! We're using our own single origin, direct-trade chocolate from Belize now for all our production--come taste the difference rain forest grown cacao makes.

Check the listing for details and be sure not to wait too long to register. These classes do fill up quickly. See you there!
