I haven't read this book (yet) but already I LOVE the author's retort:

The book is "The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ" [Amazon]

I had seen the one of the mother going off on her son before. Just amazing to see how other people "discuss" things. The other one, of Pullman explaining himself, is just excellent, especially his saying that anyone has a right to express their outrage or their opinions concerning something that "offends" them. The book title is hardly shocking, though ...

Iranian cleric blames quakes on promiscuous women. "Hojjat ol-eslam Kazem Sediqi, the acting Friday prayer leader in Tehran, said women should stick to strict codes of modesty to protect themselves."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCUQRfVBIxo The CNN hostess keeps laughing at the idea that women are to be blamed for natural causes.

"Many women who do not dress modestly lead young men astray and spread adultery in society which increases earthquakes."

Bible Quiz shows exposes inconsistencies and pokes fun at people who follow this book as their guide of "truth". My favorite part is around 6:20.

Another comedian, Patton Oswalt, gives his humorous take on how religion came about in terms of desserts- sky cake!

Warning: Strong language

Reading these reminds me of my journey to the realization there was no supernatural anything influencing our lives. Having made that realization in the uu church, I thought I would be able to grow and flesh out my religious understanding.

Year after year I waded through metaphors, cut back my responses to what was said around me, tried to reinterpret what I heard so I could get the human kernel out of what was taught and discussed. I spent thirty years digging a hole instead of growing my understanding of what it means to be human with all of its joys and sorrows.

Coming to NTOF was the gift, the blessing of having a home to grow in.

It is difficult to re-walk the old road that got me to my understanding thirty years ago. It feels as if I still have not moved forward, that I can only recognize what is in our history and teachings that so fail us, trap us in their ugliness and cruelty.

What do we, ourselves, have to celebrate our humanness, our gifts to living, to enriching this life we have as a result of our environment assembling the circumstances that brought us here?

We each have the goodness of life and the perils of life. It is a continuing effort to protect ourselves from ourselves, and it can be a joy when we achieve that. I, of course, think that religion has been a human method of control and a way to define the in group and the out group. Not much to do with expanding us individually.

So, here we are. Can we take what we've realized and make a place to grow? Or can we only recognize the pain and betrayal?

Super Heroes vs. the Westboro Baptist Church

A baptist church protested at a comic convention only to be met by counter-protest. An amusing and lively protest!
