SUMMARY:The Genève Happiness CLub July Meetup
DESCRIPTION:Alternative Health Meetups > The Genève Happiness CLub\n\nWHAT
IS THE HAPPINESS CLUB? \nBE HAPPY ZONE \nBy Lionel Ketchian\n\n"Strive to r
ealize a state of inward happiness\, independent of circumstances." These a
re the profound words of J.P. Greaves. I do not know who Mr. Greaves was\,
but I do know he had an understanding of happiness that very few people rea
lize. As I tried to change things and events outside of me\, they could not
change enough for me to feel happy on the inside. Eleven years ago that ch
anged\, and I have been happy one hundred percent of the time. The decision
to become a happy person has not only benefited me\, but the readers of my
articles and people who come to the Happiness Club. You can be miserable o
r you can be happy. It's not the reasons that matter\; it's the results. Wh
en you are happy everything works better. Your problems either get resolved
or they no longer have a negative affect on you. I do the best I can with
those things (called life) to change them\, and being happy takes care of t
he rest.\n\nWhat is the Happiness Club? It is an organization with a purpos
e to promote the benefits of being happy through meetings\, newsletters\, a
nd an informative web site\, to the people in our community\, and around th
e world.\n\nWhat is the cost? It costs nothing! No dues or charges\, all it
will cost you is the time you spend to go to a meeting and learn about hap
piness. I have found that unhappiness cost too much and is not worth the pr
ice we pay for it. What is unhappiness costing you?\n\nWhat is Happiness? M
y definition of happiness is an inner state of well being which enables you
to profit from your highest: thoughts\, wisdom\, intelligence\, common sen
 se\, emotions\, health\, and spiritual values in your life.\n\nWhat do we t
each? It is a rational\, common sense approach to accept a positive view of
life and deal with the things we cannot change. Learning to direct your en
ergy to the things that are in your choice and control\, will make you a ha
ppier person.\n\nWhat can you get out of it? You can get happy! It has been
proven that being happy benefits your health. \nHappiness is the best self
-improvement plan for being a better and friendlier person. It also provide
s you with the opportunity to socialize\, meet new people\, and form friend
ships. You can have a wonderful time\, smile\, and laugh a lot! Nice people
do so much for everyone around them\; they need to become happy within the
mselves so they can continue to give to others. If you're not happy\, how c
an you give happiness to others? You can't give away what you do not have.
Spend time connecting with yourself and others\, it benefits your relations
hips and the world you live in.\n\nWhat is a meeting like? The Happiness Cl
ub presents strategies to live your life to the fullest. Lionel and others
present ways to be happy each month. We have discussions during every meeti
ng. You have a chance to learn from others and express your viewpoint if yo
u choose. The meetings are educational\, and you take something home with y
ou to use in your life in order to be a happier person.\n\nWhy is unhappine
ss a problem? When you are unhappy you are at the effect of the negative th
ings in your life. You allow them to have power over you. Being unhappy pro
duces more negative influences in your life. You experience the unfairness
of life in a state of confusion\, so you take loss to an unhealthy level. Y
ou hurt\, you worry\, you suffer\, you become fearful\, you become helpless
\, and you are unhappy with your life.\n\nWhy have a Happiness Club? When y
ou're happy you can increase your endurance for dealing with life's problem
 s. Happiness allows you to make easier decisions\, and access the wisdom wi
thin yourself. Furthermore\, you become more loving and experience peaceful
ness. Your entire attitude becomes one of greater strength. You become posi
tive and powerful. People notice the change and it begins to positively aff
ect others. Imagine happiness spreading like the common cold. It can! You c
an make it happen by learning to be happy. You can change the world by taki
ng control of yourself.\n\nWhen did the club start? We originated in Januar
y 2000. On Leap Year Day\, February 29\, 2000\, the Happiness Club appeared
on the front page of The Connecticut Post. The Happiness Club has been wri
tten up in several newspapers and magazines. We have appeared on television
and have done live radio talk shows.\n\nWhere can I learn more about happi
ness? Come to the meetings\, read the Be Happy Zone column\, check our web
site\, read books.\n\n\nWhat do the people involved in the club get out of
it? We do it because we care about others and ourselves. We do it because w
e want people's lives to be better\, and help them overcome some tough time
 s. We get to see old friends and meet new friends. We make no money doing i
t\, and we generate happiness.\n\nWhy be happy? Why not\, is the best answe
 r! Life is short? Be Happy!\n\nGenève - Switzerland\n\nMonday\, July 28 at

SUMMARY:Geneva Area Pond Club's free meeting on August 3
DESCRIPTION:Ponds Meetups > Geneva Area Pond Club\n\nhttp://photos1.meetups
 tatic.com/photos/event/2/8/b/9/event_4210425.jpeg\n\nThe pond club's favori
te meeting place is the garden of club leaders Suzanne and Peter in Nyon. T
he August 3 meeting will be held on the patio and in the gazebo beside thei
r water lily ponds. There we can watch twelve aquatic turtles swimming with
many goldfish\, and fifteen terrestrial tortoises strolling throughout the
fenced-in garden.\n\nThe formal portion of this meeting will consist of a
question-and-answer period\, during which you can get advice from the exper
ts on designing\, constructing and maintaining garden ponds. All attendees
will contribute suggestions based on their own experiences. Discussions (ty
pically in English or French) often concern how to design ponds to be safe
for children\, how to select plants and fish that best survive winters in t
he Geneva area\, how to protect the fish from hungry herons\, how to divide
and propagate water lilies\, how to prevent and eliminate green-water alga
e\, and many other topics of interest both to beginning and advanced water
gardeners.\n\nOn request\, Peter can display and explain how to make the si
mple devices he designed to trap and catch elusive fish\, protect baby fry
from predators\, support tall water plants to keep them from flopping over\
, etc. You can also see how to construct the inexpensive biological filteri
ng system he devised\, which needs rinsing only once a year. Visitors are a
lways welcome at these free events\, so invite interested friends and neigh
 bors to come along.\n\nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/d/6/5/2
/event_1854866.jpeg\n\nFull details of the August 3 meeting are on the club
's web site at http://ponds.meetup.com/1/calendar/7990509. Clicking on the
blue link marked 'Suzanne and Peter's home and garden' brings up a Google m
ap showing the meeting's location. You can click on 'Get directions' below
the map\, type in your own address\, then click to get turn-by-turn travel
directions from your home to Suzanne and Peter's. The map and directions ca
n be printed for your drive to the meeting.\n\nWhile you're on the club's w
eb site\, click on its 'Calendar' section at http://ponds.meetup.com/calend
ar/list to see a list of all upcoming free meetings. Click on each event's
title to read its location and full details\, then submit your RSVP on that
page to indicate whether you can or can't attend. Just click Yes\, Maybe\,
or No\; then the meeting hosts and other club members can see who's coming
and who isn't coming. Hosts have to know in advance how many snacks and dr
inks to prepare for the meeting. If your plans change\, just return to the
meeting's description page to revise your RSVP.\n\nIf you're not available
on any of the meeting dates already listed\, you can host a meeting in your
own home or garden on a date you prefer. The club always meets on the firs
t and third Sundays of every month. To reserve an ideal Sunday for your mee
ting (before some other club member chooses that date)\, write to club lead
ers Suzanne and Peter at PeterSuzanne2@hotmail.com\, or call them in Nyon a
t 0041 22 362 03 60. They always help meeting hosts before and during each
event. Contact them if you have any questions.\n\nhttp://photos1.meetupstat

tional holiday\, August 1\, and we didn't want them to miss this informativ
e event.\n\nAt the August 9 meeting\, Line will describe the courtship ritu
als of adult Hermann's tortoises\, a sure sign that a female will soon lay
eggs. We'll learn how the female digs several test holes until she chooses
an ideal spot for the nest. Line will explain how she carefully removes the
eggs and places them in her incubator for development. We'll see how she r
egulates its temperature and humidity\, because each species requires diffe
rent settings for proper development of the eggs. We'll also learn how very
slight temperature adjustments can produce either more male or more female
hatchlings\, depending on which you want to add to your collection. Line w
ill explain the proper care\, housing and feeding of the hatchlings\, how t
o acclimate them to live in their outdoor enclosure\, and how to have them
safely hibernate during their first winter.\n\nhttp://photos3.meetupstatic.
 com/photos/event/c/9/9/a/event_231610.jpeg\n\nMany other subjects are discu
ssed at every meeting\, including some totally unrelated to raising turtles
or tortoises. Bring your questions for the experts to answer\, and contrib
ute suggestions based on your own experiences. At these informal get-togeth
ers\, conversations in English or French are stimulated with generous quant
ities of snacks and drinks\, because our events are social as well as educa
tional.\n\nFull details of this meeting are on the club's web site at http:
//turtles.meetup.com/44/calendar/8114520. On that page you can submit your
RSVP to let Line know if you can or can't attend. Click Yes\, Maybe\, or No
\, add a note in the 'Comments' box\, and click 'Submit.' All our events ar
e free and visitors are always welcome\, so invite interested friends and n
eighbors to come along. Just remember to indicate in your RSVP how many gue
 sts you're bringing.\n\nIf you can't attend this meeting\, you'll find a li
st of our other free events in the web site's 'Calendar' section at http://
turtles.meetup.com/44/calendar/list. Click on a meeting's title to read its
location and full details\, then submit your RSVP. If none of those dates
is convenient for you\, you can choose a better date and host a club meetin
g in your own home. Hosting involves little more than providing some refres
hments for those who attend. Club leaders Suzanne and Peter always help the
hosts before and during a meeting. To reserve a date for a club meeting ch
ez vous (before some other club member chooses that date)\, call the leader
 s in Nyon at 0041 22 362 03 60\, or write to them at PeterSuzanne2@hotmail.
com.\n\nOnly turtle society members are entitled to host a club meeting\, b
ut not to worry. All animal lovers can instantly join the club for free rig
ht on the web site. Let your friends know they can log on to http://turtles
.meetup.com/44/about to learn all about the club\, then click the red link
marked 'Sign up' to become members. They can then be informed in advance of
all turtle society meetings\, and enjoy the other benefits of membership.\
n\nAmong those benefits is the right to help determine the club's managemen
 t. They can vote on the various questions on line in our 'Polls' section at
http://turtles.meetup.com/44/polls. Everyone can click on each question to
see the results so far\, but only members can submit or revise their votes
and instantly see the change in results.\n\nOnly members can have their ph
otos posted in the 'Photos' section at http://turtles.meetup.com/44/photos.
  E-mail digital photos of your turtles\, tortoises\, aquariums\, terrariums
 \, ponds\, enclosures\, incubators or hibernation shelters to Peter\, and h
 e'll post them for everyone to admire.\n\nAllaman - Switzerland\n\nSaturday

SUMMARY:Geneva Area Pond Club's free meeting on August 17
DESCRIPTION:Ponds Meetups > Geneva Area Pond Club\n\nhttp://photos2.meetups
 tatic.com/photos/event/b/c/9/event_243017.jpeg\n\nThe pond club hasn't met
at Eva's home and garden since 2006\, so we're invited back for this meetin
g on August 17. We'll see the three water lily ponds she devised from gigan
tic plastic tubs. Examining the many different designs and materials availa
ble for constructing ponds is a main reason we meet in a different club mem
ber's garden every time. Seeing the variety of possibilities\, newcomers ar
e inspired to install their first pond\, and oldtimers get ideas for improv
ing their own.\n\nFull details of this event are on the club's web site at
http://ponds.meetup.com/calendar/8152608. On that page you can let Eva know
whether you can or can't attend. Just click Yes\, Maybe\, or No\, add a no
te in the 'Comments' box\, and click 'Submit.' If your plans change\, you c
an return to that page to revise your RSVP. Visitors are welcome at these f
ree events\, so invite interested friends to come along. Please indicate in
your RSVP how many guests you're bringing.\n\nBecause every meeting is in
a different venue\, you'll need travel directions to drive there. Each even
t's page includes above its description a blue link for its precise locatio
 n. Click the link to get a Google road map to the neighborhood\, which can
be clicked to zoom in and out to get your bearings. To the left of the litt
le map\, click the link marked 'Directions' for a larger detailed map. Type
your address in the box marked 'From\,' click 'Get Directions\,' and you'l
l get turn-by-turn travel directions from your home to the host's home. The
maps and directions can be printed for your drive to the meeting.\n\nhttp:
 //photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/1/2/8/1/event_244737.jpeg\n\nThe ma
in topic of discussion at the August 17 meeting will be designing and insta
lling ponds. Peter and other experienced pond builders will describe the be
st locations for ponds in a garden\, ideally far from any trees. Tree leave
s falling into the water could produce noxious methane gas when they decomp
ose\, which could suffocate pond fish. Some trees like the weeping willow h
ave a mild poison in their leaves\, which could change the water's chemistr
y and be detrimental to the fish. Strong tree roots might penetrate the pon
d's liner and cause it to leak. The dense shade from trees would also dimin
ish the number of flowers produced by water lilies and other aquatic plants
that need full sun to bloom.\n\nPonds can be constructed of many materials
\, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Concrete was the only po
nd-building material available for centuries\, and its use required experti
se and great expense. But the heaving of the earth as it contracted and exp
anded in changeable weather consistently caused cracks that resisted perman
ent patching. Preformed rigid plastic shells in many sizes and shapes can n
ow be sunk into the ground to create a small pond. The advent of flexible p
lastic liners made pond construction a relatively simple do-it-yourself pro
ject at low cost. The cheaper plastics like PVC and vinyl last for several
years\, but now EPDM rubber liners are the most popular. They're guaranteed
not to leak for 40 years.\n\nIf children are in the family or frequently v
isit your garden\, it's important to design your pond to prevent them from
falling in. Peter will describe the many safety features that can be incorp
orated to make your pond safe for children. He stresses the importance of k
eeping children from drowning: He explains that when their bodies lie in th
e bottom of the pond\, they begin to rot and that makes the water smell bad
and turn black\, and all the water will have to be changed\, and it's not
worth all that trouble\, so it's best not to let the kids fall in. Sometime
s he can get through that whole explanation with a straight face\, but not
 often.\n\nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/b/9/8/event_242968.j
peg\n\nMany other pond topics will be discussed at this meeting\, both seri
ous and not-so-serious. These meetings are social as well as educational\,
so subjects totally unrelated to ponds always come up as well. The snacks a
nd drinks provided by each host invariably stimulate lively conversations.\
 n\nIf you can't attend the August 17 meeting\, check out the club's other f
ree events. They're always listed in the web site's 'Calendar' section at h
ttp://ponds.meetup.com/1/calendar/list. Click on each event's title to read
its location and full details\, then submit your RSVP. If you can't attend
any of those meetings\, choose your own date and host a club meeting in yo
ur own home. We meet on the first and third Sundays of every month. To rese
rve an ideal date for a meeting chez vous\, call club leaders Suzanne and P
eter in Nyon at 0041 22 362 03 60\, or write to them at PeterSuzanne2@hotma
il.com.\n\nBut first please submit your RSVP for the August 17 meeting. Tha
 nk you.\n\nGrand-Lancy\, Genève - Switzerland\n\nSunday\, August 17 at 3:00
