SUMMARY:Geneva Area Pond Club's free meeting on May 18
DESCRIPTION:Ponds Meetups > Geneva Area Pond Club\n\nhttp://photos3.meetups
 tatic.com/photos/event/b/1/8/d/event_3465453.jpeg\n\nThis will be the first
meeting to be held in Ann and Glen's home and garden in Thonex\, so we'll
be seeing their pond for the first time. We try to meet in a different venu
e each time to see the wide variety of ponds our club members have created.
This pond is one of the few designed specifically to be for the local wild
life instead of the traditional goldfish or koi. It was built in August of
2006\, so it's already been discovered by several frogs\, dragonflies\, duc
ks and other wild creatures. We'll observe many of them during the meeting.
\n\nThe main topic of discussion at this event will be the many ways we can
design our ponds to welcome back the animals that our homes and gardens di
splaced. Creatures requiring access to water\, especially\, are suffering a
s undeveloped areas succumb to development for residential and commercial c
onstruction. We can mitigate this destruction of the animals' natural habit
ats by adapting our ponds to attract these fascinating creatures into our g
 ardens.\n\nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/b/1/8/e/event_34654
54.jpeg\n\nPonds can be designed or modified specifically to welcome a wide
variety of wildlife. Then we can watch frogs\, toads\, newts\, salamanders
 \, dragonflies\, butterflies\, damselflies\, mayflies\, songbirds and many
other creatures as they visit or live in or around our ponds. If you add mo
re oxygenating plants underwater\, emergent plants in the water\, and bog p
lants at the edges of your pond\, they'll provide lots of hiding places\, n
esting sites\, and natural food for the wildlife. If you modify a portion o
f the pond's border to be a gently sloping beach\, amphibious creatures can
easily enter and leave the water. If you keep a birdfeeder full of seeds\,
put food out for hedgehogs\, and add appropriate plants to attract butterf
lies to your garden\, you'll feel much closer to nature.\n\nThese details w
ill be elaborated on during the formal part of this meeting\, along with an
y other pond-related subjects that come up. As usual\, the informal snack-a
nd-chat portion of the meeting is bound to bring up every other subject und
er the sun. Pond club meetings are casual affairs\, because the events are
social as well as educational. Visitors are always welcome\, so bring along
  any interested friends and neighbors.\n\nhttp://photos3.meetupstatic.com/p
hotos/event/b/1/8/f/event_3465455.jpeg\n\nFull details of this meeting are
on the club's web site at http://ponds.meetup.com/1/calendar/7513713. To le
arn how to get to its location\, click on the blue link marked 'Info/Map' b
elow the hosts' address. That brings up a clear Google road map that you ca
n zoom in and out of\, or re-center to get your bearings. Click on 'Get dir
ections\,' type in your own address\, then click to get step-by-step travel
directions from your home to Ann and Glen's home. The map and directions c
an be printed to guide you on your drive to the May 18 meeting.\n\nThe web
site's 'Calendar' section at http://ponds.meetup.com/1/calendar/list lists
all the other free meetings already on our schedule. You can click on an ev
ent's title to read its full details\, then indicate if you can attend by s
ubmitting your RSVP on that page. Just click Yes\, Maybe\, or No\, add a no
te in the 'Comments' box\, and click 'Submit.'\n\nhttp://photos2.meetupstat
ic.com/photos/event/c/a/f/1/event_3591953.jpeg\n\nIf none of the dates or l
ocations of upcoming events are convenient for you to attend\, we can sched
ule a meeting on your preferred date in your own home or garden. The club a
lways meets on the first and third Sundays of every month. To reserve an id
eal date for a meeting chez vous\, write to club leaders Suzanne and Peter
at PeterSuzanne2@hotmail.com. They always help event hosts both before and
during the meeting.\n\nOnly club members may host a meeting\, but everyone
interested in ponds can instantly become a member for free right on the web
site. Just click the red link marked 'Sign up\,' type in your name and oth
er details\, then enjoy all the benefits of membership. Only members can vo
te on pending club-management questions in the web site's 'Polls' section a
t http://ponds.meetup.com/1/polls. Only members can have photos of their po
nds or meetings posted in the 'Photos' section at http://ponds.meetup.com/1
/photos. Only members can post questions or answers in the 'Messages' secti
on at http://ponds.meetup.com/1/messages.\n\nMembers and non-members alike
can explore all the other sections of our extensive web site for advice on
designing and maintaining ponds in the Geneva area. But first submit your R
SVP for the May 18 meeting in Thonex\, and any other events you can attend.
We hope to meet there many of the new members who joined the club this win
 ter.\n\nhttp://photos3.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/b/1/9/0/event_3465456.

DESCRIPTION:Ponds Meetups > Geneva Area Pond Club\n\nhttp://photos2.meetups
 tatic.com/photos/event/a/d/0/7/highres_3344295.jpeg\n\nToday we're meeting
by the pond in a beautiful garden designated a 'Parc Naturel' by the founda
tion 'Nature et Economie.' It was created by new pond club member Guy Louta
n\, a naturalist who designed his entire house and garden to be in harmony
with nature. We'll see his various biotopes\, water-management system\, roo
f garden\, solar panels that heat water and generate electricity\, and of c
ourse his ponds and stream.\n\nThe 15-square-meter pond is two meters deep.
The adjoining stream is an impressive 30 meters long. The garden is full o
f flowers and plants that attract many forms of wildlife\, including dragon
flies\, newts and toads. You can see pictures of all these sights in the 'P
hotos' section of the pond club's web site at http://ponds.meetup.com/1/pho
tos/?photoAlbumId=305656. Click on each photo in the 'Guy Loutan's pond' al
bum to enlarge the picture\, then scroll down the screen to see albums of o
ther club members' ponds.\n\nThere will be two main topics of discussion at
this meeting. Guy is the founder of the CONVIVE organization (CONstruct VI
vant et VErt)\, dedicated to constructing with nature in mind. He'll descri
be all the ways we can make our ponds and gardens more beneficial for natur
e's wild creatures. He'll also introduce Jacques Thiebaud\, who's creating
a complete database listing and describing all the ponds in the canton of G

SUMMARY:Geneva Area Turtle and Tortoise Society's free meeting on June 7
DESCRIPTION:Turtle and Tortoise Meetups > Geneva Area Turtle and Tortoise S
 ociety\n\nhttp://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/9/4/e/c/event_123812
4.jpeg\n\nBecause so many new members recently joined the club (88 families
or individuals are current members)\, it's time for us to meet the newcome
rs. We'll introduce the new members at the June 7 meeting\, and learn about
them and their turtles and tortoises. Come to meet other soft-hearted owne
 rs of these hard-shelled reptiles.\n\nLearning about the care\, feeding\, h
ousing and breeding of turtles and tortoises from owners in the Geneva area
is the best way to give our pets the benefit of everyone else's local expe
rience. Peter and other expert herpetologists at these meetings can answer
all the technical questions you may have. Other members can explain how the
y handled any unusual situations they encountered with their own turtles an
 d tortoises.\n\nhttp://photos3.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/d/4/f/2/event_
2034514.jpeg\n\nThe June 7 meeting will be held in the garden of club leade
rs Suzanne and Peter. It's in Nyon\, about 15 minutes northeast of Geneva.
There you can see twelve aquatic turtles basking or swimming with hundreds
of fish in the two water-lily ponds. Ten terrestrial tortoises stroll throu
ghout the fenced-in garden or in their enclosed 'tortoisarium.' Five baby t
ortoises will be in their indoor terrarium.\n\nIf the adults lay any eggs b
 y June 7\, they'll be moved to develop in Peter's home-made incubator\, whe
re the latest babies hatched out last year. He'll explain how you can make
your own simple incubator\, and how to regulate its temperature and humidit
y to be ideal for hatching the eggs of whichever species of turtles and tor
 toises you have.\n\nhttp://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/4/3/f/3/ev
ent_1697395.jpeg\n\nYou can also learn how to make insulated shelters so th
at tortoises can hibernate in Geneva-area gardens every winter\, how to pre
pare ideal nesting areas in which turtles and tortoises can lay their eggs\
, see the wide range of ordinary foods that will keep your reptile pets hea
lthy all their long lives\, and learn many other ways to create an ideal lo
cal environment for them.\n\nVisitors are always welcome at the turtle soci
ety's free meetings\, so invite your interested friends\, neighbors and chi
ldren to come along. They can read full details of the June 7 meeting on th
 e club's web site at http://turtles.meetup.com/44/calendar/7811202. Details
of all upcoming meetings are always in the site's 'Calendar' section at ht
tp://turtles.meetup.com/44/calendar/list. Click on the title of each meetin
g to read its location and details\, then click Yes\, Maybe\, or No to indi
cate if you can attend. If your plans change\, you can always return to the
meeting's description page to revise your RSVP. \n\nEveryone can also inst
antly join the club for free right on its web site. Have your friends log o
n to http://turtles.meetup.com/44/about to learn all about the club and how
to navigate the site's many informative pages. If they like what they read
\, they can join the club by clicking the red link marked 'Sign up\,' and c
an then attend all the free meetings.\n\nhttp://photos2.meetupstatic.com/ph
 otos/event/4/3/f/4/event_1697396.jpeg\n\nMembership has its privileges. Eve
ryone can read the current vote counts in the web site's 'Polls' section at
http://turtles.meetup.com/44/polls\, but only club members can register or
change their votes on each question to affect the outcomes. The club is or
ganized by Suzanne and Peter\, but it's run democratically by members who v
ote on various topics to determine its management.\n\nEveryone can view the
pictures in the site's 'Photos' section at http://turtles.meetup.com/44/ph
otos\, but only club members can have photos of their turtles\, tortoises\,
shelters\, incubators\, aquariums and terrariums posted there. If a member

n\nEveryone can attend the free meetings wherever they're held\, but only c
lub members can host a turtle society meeting in their own home. Meetings a
lways take place on the first Saturday of every month\, and occasionally on
the third Saturday as well. Hosting is easy\, involving little more than p
roviding some snacks and drinks for those who attend. Peter and Suzanne alw
ays help the hosts before and during each meeting. Contact them to reserve
