We will paddle out from Pineland to Cayo Costa\, only a few miles out. The park's website doesn't lie (see below). This is a ver y special place with many things to see and enjoy. Bird watching\, paddlin g\, hiking\, shelling\, bike riding (rentals are available)\, beach fishing \, swimming are all great.\n\nAs we get closer to the date\, I will send ou t a map with driving directions to the boat launch\, Randell Research Cente r. Also look for a paddling map to Cayo Costa and Cabbage Key. \n\nThe bo ats will stay at the marina. The rangers will drive us to the campgrounds on the other side of the island via trolleys. These trolleys run on a freq uent basis and are a great help when transporting gear\, firewood\, ice. P ack light and bring large bags to carry your gear. Trust me\, it makes a b ig difference. I have camped on the island many times and b=never had a pr oblem with the boat. If you are concerned\, bring a lock for your boat. \ n\nOne of the best treats is the ferry. For a small fee they will carry ou r gear to the island\, you must accompany your gear though. If the weather is too windy or the seas too rough\, for a fee\, they will haul you and yo ur boat to and from the island. But let's face it\, we like to paddle\, so paddling is the plan. If you plan on using the ferry you must make your o wn arrangements.\n\nFirewood can be purchased at the ranger station\, soda and snacks too but not all your meals. Bring some cash\, they do not accep t credit on the island.\n\nThey do accept credit cards at Cabbage Key Cabba ge Key and it is only short paddle away. Plan on stopping by for lunch or dinner. The burgers are great and the beer is cold. This will be one of o ur meals.\n\nCAMPSITES ARE SOLD OUT. Myers an d is accessible only by private boat or passenger ferry. Here you will find something for everyone. Anglers\, from the novice to the more experienced\ , try their luck fishing from the sandy shores. All anglers over the age of 16 will need a Florida Fishing License. Shell-seekers will want to visit t he south end of the island\, where the sea leaves her treasures for you to collect.\n\nWith 5 ½ miles of biking and hiking trails\, you may want to ch eck out their fleet of bicycles for a leisurely tour of the island\; contac t the ranger station to make arrangements to rent one for the day! What a g reat way to enjoy The Real Florida\, Florida State Parks!\n\nWith nine mile s of beautiful beaches and acres of pine forests\, oak-palm hammocks\, and mangrove swamps\, this barrier island park is a Gulf Coast paradise. The pa rk is accessible only by private boat or ferry. Visitors may see manatees a nd pods of dolphins in the waters around the park\, as well as a spectacula r assortment of birds. On the island\, visitors can swim or snorkel in the surf\, enjoy the sun\, and picnic in the shade. Shelling is especially good during the winter months. Nature trails provide opportunities for hiking a nd off-road bicycling. Saltwater anglers can fish from their boats or throw a line out into the surf. An amphitheater provides educational programs ab out the islands ecology and history. For overnight stays\, the park offers primitive cabins and tent camping. We will have time to take a short pho to walk of the area and hopefully get in a few wildlife shots before convoy ing to our sunset shoot location at about 5:00 PM. That should give us plen ty of time to move to the new site\, visit a bit\, swap tips as to shooting sunsets\, and set up for the 6:14PM sunset. Note that many times the best colors occur some 15-45 minutes AFTER official sunset so plan accordingly. Hopefully\, Mother Nature will cooperate and give us some clouds for dramat ic effect.\n\nThe sunset shoot will take place at Pine Glades Lake and is k nown to many local photographers as one of the best sites for sunsets in th e entire Everglades. The image above was taken at our shoot location. It is located about 10 miles inside the park from the Royal Palm area. To access the lake you have to travel down an unmarked dirt road for about 1/2-3/4 o f a mile. The road is rather rough but it is very wide and certainly passab le at slow speeds. I will provide a strip map to everyone at the meetup and we can also convoy to that location. Members who want to take a pass on An hinga Trail and go straight to the lake should drop me a email and I will s end them the directions. There is ample space for parking. The area has the following restrictions: no fires\, no swimming\, and no camping. Picnicing is allowed.
