DESCRIPTION:The Miami Kayaking Meetup Group\n\nThe idea is to meet at the b oat ramp at West Lake a bit early and get in the water by 8:30. Or close. T he parking lot and ramp is about 30 miles past the south entrance to Evergl ades National Park. It's on the left a bit past the parking lot for Nine-Mi le Pond and Hells Bay put-in. \nWith respect to the paddle\, it's a little more than 7 miles out to Garfield Bight and a bit over 20 miles round trip if we go all the way to Shark Point. I'd like to be off the water by around 4 or 5PM. \nThe trip takes us through a series of lakes and connecting man grove tunnels(this is where we encounter bugs) and finally out to a shallow bay at Garfield Bight. The distance is mostly over shallow water less than 5 feet deep. \nWe should have an incoming tide and the Marine forecast pre dicts a sunny day with winds at 5-10 knots out of the north. Its a good pad dle in Everglades backwaters. I figure to take a rod or two and throw some casts to see if I can pick up a snook or red. I plan to have a nice day. \n Bring lunch\, water\, a hat\, sunscreen\, bug spray (just in case)\, snacks \, camera\, PFD\, etc. We may be able to get out of the boats by Alligator creek or by Shark Point if we go\, but we need to be time-conscious because the sun has set at 6pm and I don't fancy coming back through the mangrove creeks in the dark. The mosquitoes can be fierce. The bottom in most places is soft muck and not suitable for wading. There are usually birds- we've s een eagles and herons there- usually there are lots of waterbirds\, white p elicans\, and black-necked stilts are abundant. We see alligators in the cr eek or on the banks and occasionally crocodiles\, though you never know unt il you get there. Its a gorgeous paddle going down West Lake and then throu gh the connecting lakes out to the bight. It's in the vicinity of where the two interstates merge . \n\nAfterward\, there is so much to do. The grounds are over 600 acres\ , with lakes\, BBQ pits\, open fields. It's pet friendly\, shooting range. I'm just there to mountain bike. Before heading home\, I'd like to sugge st going the one of the best Chinese community style sit down restaurants i n Broward (Dragon City). It's really inexpensive and I actually learned ab out this place through some "real life Oriental people" who don't work ther e when I went for a Chinese New Year party. The restaurant has a fish tank with a variety of seafood as well as vegetarian/ and other meat dishes tha t you can't get at China Buffet (i.e. duck tongue... yum yum). \n\nLastly\ , bring your swimwear/ including towel\, just in case we decide to get wet later\, but I'm sure by that time some of us will be ready to head home.
