s founded in 1958 and was renamed the Weatherhead Center for International
Affairs in 1998 in gratitude for the magnificent endowment established by A
lbert and Celia Weatherhead and the Weatherhead Foundation. The Center was
created as a means of confronting the world's condition\, a condition diagn
osed by Robert Bowie and Henry Kissinger in their gripping The Program of t
he Center for International Affairs (1958):\n“Foreign affairs in our era po
se unprecedented tasks…Today no region is isolated\; none can be ignored\; actions and events even
in remote places may have immediate worldwide impact…vast forces are reshaping the world with headlong speed. Under the impact o
 f wars\, nationalism\, technology\, and communism\, the old order has been
shattered. Empires have crumbled\; nations once dominant are forced to adap
t to shrunken influence. New nations have emerged and are struggling to sur
vive…Nowhere do traditional attitudes fit the new realities…Thus notions of sovereignty and independence need revision to apply to a wo
rld where a nation's level of life or survival may depend as much on the ac
tions of other countries as on its own…“\nThat diagnosis\, and the challenges that shaped the Center's vision and
mission then\, remain pertinent and continue to inform our work today.\n\nT
he Center is the largest international research center within Harvard Unive
rsity’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The Center is structured to encourage
the highest practical level of personal and intellectual interaction among
a diverse community of scholars and practitioners. It is distinctive in it
s recognition that knowledge is a product not only of individual academic r
esearch\, but also of vigorous\, sustained intellectual dialogue among scho
lars and nonacademic experts. To stimulate this dialogue\, the Center spons
ors a wide array of seminars\, research programs\, workshops\, and conferen

istance stretching is rooted in knowledge of the organic nature of muscular
flexibility. Ever woken up and\, on impulse\, reached out with hands up in

result? Increased flexibility and movement.\n\nBob Cooley\, author of The G

SUMMARY:Media Tech Tonic: What Art Can Tell Us About The Brain @ MassART
DESCRIPTION:Nerd Fun - Boston\n\n"There's been a room change for Media Tech
Tonic #11: Margaret Livingstone\, What art can tell us about the brain on
 Thursday\, November 12\, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. The new location is room 406 in
the Kennedy building at MassArt. For more information please see: http://me
 diatechtonic.org/media-tech-tonic-11/ . "\n\n\n\nFrom Media Tonic.Org:\nhtt
p://mediatechtonic.org/\n\n"The next speaker in our Fall of 2009 series wil
l be Margaret Livingstone. The lecture will take place at MassArt on Thursd
ay\, November 12\, 2009 and is free and open to the public. Please RSVP for
  this event [ RSVP: http://mediatechtonic.org/form/ ).\n\n"Abstract:\n\n"Ar
tists have been doing experiments on vision longer than neurobiologists. So
me major works of art have provided insights as to how we see\; some of the
se insights are so fundamental that they can be understood in terms of the
underlying neurobiology. For example\, artists have long realized that colo
r and luminance can play independent roles in visual perception. Picasso sa
id\, “Colors are only symbols. Reality is to be found in luminance alone.”
This observation has a parallel in the functional subdivision of our visual
systems\, where color and luminance are processed by the newer\, primate-s
pecific What system\, and the older\, colorblind\, Where (or How) system. M
any techniques developed over the centuries by artists can be understood in
terms of the parallel organization of our visual systems. I will explore h
ow the segregation of color and luminance processing are the basis for why
some Impressionist paintings seem to shimmer\, why some op art paintings se
em to move\, some principles of Matisse’s use of color\, and how the Impres
sionists painted 'air'. Central and peripheral vision are distinct\, and I
will show how the differences in resolution across our visual field make th
e Mona Lisa’s smile elusive\, and produce a dynamic illusion in Pointillist
paintings\, Chuck Close paintings\, and photomosaics. I will explore how a
rtists have intuited important features about how our brains extract releva
nt information about faces and objects\, and I will discuss why learning di
sabilities may be associated with artistic talent."\n\nLocation: MassArt\,

 out Margaret Livingstone:\nhttp://mediatechtonic.org/\n\n"Dr. Margaret Livi
ngstone has worked in several different fields of neurobiology and has cont
ributed significantly to them. She has explored the ways in which vision sc
ience can understand and inform the world of visual art and is the author o
f the popular book\, Vision and Art: The Biology of Seeing\, which has brou
ght her acclaim in the art world as a scientist who can communicate with ar
tists and art historians\, with mutual benefit. Livingstone generated some
important insights into the field\, including a simple explanation for the
elusive quality of the Mona Lisa’s smile (it is more visible to peripheral
vision than to central vision) and the fact that Rembrandt\, like a surpris
ingly large number of famous artists\, was likely to have been stereoblind.
As a scientist\, She is best known for her work on visual processing. In c
ollaboration with David Hubel she did groundbreaking work on the parallel p
rocessing of visual information. In 1984 they described a new subdivision i
n primate primary visual cortex involved in processing information about co
lor\, and described the anatomy and physiology of this previously unknown s
ystem. Livingstone went on to apply objective\, quantitative mapping techni
ques to primary and extrastriate visual areas\, revealing fundamental compu
tational strategies used by the visual system in processing information. He
r work has led to a deeper understanding of how we see color\, motion\, and
depth\, and how these processes are involved in generating percepts of obj
ects as distinct from their background. She earned her Ph.D. from Harvard U
niversity in Neurobiology and is currently Professor of Neurobiology at the
Harvard Medical School and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Cognitiv
e and Neural Systems at Boston University".\n\nParking: \nhttp://mediatecht

Street lot if you enter the lot between 5:45pm and 6:45pm. If you’re drivin
g\, take a close look at a Google Map of the area\, finding the Ward Street
Lot can be tricky the first time.\n\n"If you’re traveling west on Huntingt
on Avenue from Downtown\, as you pass the main campus on your right\, take
a left at the light at the Longwood Avenue intersection\, crossing over the
trolley tracks. Go straight to the stop sign and turn left\, then immediat
ely turn right onto Ward Street. MassArt’s parking lot is short distance ah
ead on the left.\n\n"If you’re traveling east on Huntington Avenue from Bri
ngham Circle\, take a right at the light at the Longwood Avenue intersectio
n\, then a quick left at the stop sign and right on Ward Street. MassArt’s
parking lot is short distance ahead on the left.\n\n"The gate should be ope

ey should have it on their list of events for this evening".\n\nBoston\, MA

SUMMARY:Amelia
DESCRIPTION:The Framingham Movie Meetup\n\nNEW STUFF:\nThe show starts at 7
:15\, so let's meet right inside the theater doors at 6:45. Then I'll buy o
ur tickets and we can get snacks and head in.\n\nIf you're going to be late
\, need directions or have to change your RSVP after 5:00 p.m. on Thursday\
, give me a call (508/308-4897).\n\nHope to see you Thursday for Amelia!\n\
 n--Dana\n\n\nOLD STUFF:\nWe go from a kids' movie\, Where The Wild Things A
re\, to a very adult movie. Let's relive Americana together and go back in
time a bit to discover who Amelia Earhart really was\, what made her tick\,
what she loved\, and why she dared fly around the world on a solo flight.\
n\nSUMMARY:\nAfter becoming the first woman to fly across the Atlantic\, Am
elia was thrust into a new role as America's sweetheart - the legendary "go
ddess of light\," known for her bold\, larger-than-life charisma. Yet\, eve
n with her global fame solidified\, her belief in flirting with danger and
standing up as her own\, outspoken woman never changed. She was an inspirat
ion to people everywhere\, from First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt to the men clo
sest to her heart: her husband\, promoter and publishing magnate George P.
Putnam\, and her long time friend and lover\, pilot Gene Vidal. In the summ
er of 1937\, Amelia set off on her most daunting mission yet: a solo flight
around the world that she and George both anxiously foresaw as destined\,
whatever the outcome\, to become one of the most talked-about journeys in h
istory. \n\nTHE USUAL STUFF:\nWe'll meet outside the theater doors and then
I can buy us all discounted tickets ($8.00 each for FMM members and their
guests). I also have $3 vouchers each for small sodas and small popcorns (c
an be used towards a larger size). Exact change makes me like you more.\n\n
As always\, guests are welcome\, just be sure to include them in the RSVP s
o that I know who/how many to expect.\n\nPlease keep your RSVP as up-to-dat
e as possible. And please call me if you're going to be late or need to cha
nge your RSVP after I close RSVPs on the site (2 hours before we meet). My
cell is: 508/308-4897. I'm also good for directions if you get lost.\n\nAft
er the movie\, we'll head to Fridays (I'll bring the coupons!) to chat abou
t the movie (and just chat).\n\nI'll update the time a few days before the
meetup\, so keep an eye on your email!\n\nHope to see you for Amelia!\n\n--

ith TWO events this month!\n\nOur November 12 feature\, Michelle Barrett is
  an original singer-songwriter with a penchant for folk pop\, blues\, and a
lternative country. Love\, loss\, and lust fuel the heart behind the big vo

performance than it is about connection and communication. As such\, she i
s rarely more than one woman with one guitar trying to deliver a message.\n
\nProceeds from our vegan bake sale will go to the Transgender Emergency Fu

SUMMARY:Top Chef/Project Runway Snarkfest!
DESCRIPTION:Social Fun\n\nSnarkfest quote of the week:\n(about Top Chef con
testant Christoper's reason for why he should be allowed to continue to the
finals) Megan: "I'm a big old loser and I'd like another chance to lose!"\
n\nThis week's Snarkfest will have lots of snacks left over from last week'
s Junk Food Challenge\, so we're covered there. But if there's something i
n particular you'd like to drink\, please bring it. Just don't bring a lot
 \, because there's quite a few beverages in the pantry now. Also\, we'll b
e firing up the oven to cook Kevin's Schwann's TV dinners!\n\nSnarkfest is
a weekly viewing of Top Chef and Project Runway. We have snacks\, we have
drinks\, and you're pretty much guaranteed to be visited by at least one fr
iendly kitten through the course of the evening. Talking to the TV is enco
uraged and we skip back plenty to catch things we missed the first time. C
ome see what's next and if you can get the winners and losers as badly as w
e did.\n\nBecause this Meetup is in my home\, the sign-ups are waiting list
only until I personally approve you\, then I will manually move you to the
"yes" list\, and the best way to get approved is to come meet me in person
first. I'm out of town this week\, so there are no other Meetup opportuni
ties before Snarkfest. But if you really want to come\, sign up and if I'm
feeling brave\, I might let you onto the "yes" list.\n\nI have a big scree
n TV and a Tivo so we'll be watching live and skipping commercials. Yes\,
it will run a little late since Project Runway ends at 11pm.\n\nI live in B
elmont\, where there is plenty of street parking and easy access on the 73
bus from Harvard Square. I'll e-mail out directions to my house to people
on the Yes list the day before we watch the shows. \n\nThings to know:\n-
I have two young cats (take note if you are allergic)\n- I have a few chair
s but it's likely some people will be sitting on the floor (where I have a
bunch of pillows). \n- I won't be providing dinner\, but there is a snack
rotation (see below). There's also a cache of beverages. If you have some
thing you really want\, bring it. \n\nHere is the agenda for the evening (
 this schedule slips around a bit\, but it's a general guideline):\n8:00: Pe
ople show up and get comfy\n8:15: Watch Top Chef from last night\n9:15: Wat
ch Models of the Runway from last week\n10:15: Watch the new Project Runway
\, start a bit late\, skip commercials\n10:55: Exclaim surprise or satisfac
tion over the latest auf-ing.\n11:15: Everyone goes home\n\nSnack Rotation:
I didn't take names for snacks last week. Volunteer for one of the items
  below. \nSalty/Savory: Challenge Goodies\nSweet: Challenge Goodies \nDrin
k: Bring something if you want something specific\, the larder has quite a
 few things.\n\nThe current larder: Ice\, apple cider\, wine\, Mike's Hard c
 oolers\, Coke\, Sprite\, Pepsi\, fizzy water (plain and flavored)\, key lim
 e juice\, grenadine\, sour apple pucker\, midori\, triple-sec\, vanilla vod
ka\, some Disaronno someone left at my house once\, and we can experiment w
ith my blender's ability to crush ice\n\nIf you have any questions\, please
leave them in the comment area below so everyone can see my answers.\n\nBe

SUMMARY:Blind Pilot / The Low Anthem @ Paradise
DESCRIPTION:Indie Rock Boston\n\nIf you like Indie Folk/Pop and haven't lis
tened to Blind Pilot's album 3 Rounds and a Sound yet\, go do it. Now. Go
on. It's great. Co-headlining with The Low Anthem\, who were excellent w
hen I saw them over the summer.\n\nBlind Pilot with The Low Anthem\, Mimick
 ing Birds @ Paradise\ndoors at 8 PM\; 18+ show\, tickets $14\n\nBlind Pilot
(from allmusic):\n\nA Portland-based duo comprised of singer/guitarist Isr
ael Nebeker and drummer Ryan Dobrowski\, Blind Pilot strike a balance betwe
en mellow folk and West Coast indie pop. The two friends first banded toget
her in college before combining their musical talents and touring the north
western Oregon circuit. By 2006\, however\, they'd decided that a change of
scenery might help fuel their songwriting. Blind Pilot consequently reloca
ted 90 miles north\, where they spent three months inside an Astoria wareho
use while recording demos for a full-length album. Afterwards\, Nebeker and
Dobrowski launched a "bike tour" that saw them traveling from Vancouver to
San Francisco via their bicycles\, playing shows and selling EPs (not to m
ention saving gas money) along the way. They returned home to finalize thei
r 3 Round and a Sound debut\, which was released by Expunged Records in Jun
e 2008.\n\nThe Low Anthem (from allmusic):\n\nThe Low Anthem's unique brand
of Americana makes room for gospel\, folk\, and blues\, a blend that began
taking shape in the trio's hometown of Providence\, RI. Ben Knox Miller an
d Jeff Prystowsky -- both students at Brown University\, as well as late-ni
ght DJs at the school's radio station -- formed the group in 2006\, drawing
upon their background as classical composers to help mold the eclectic mus
ic. Jocie Adams joined one year later\, and the Low Anthem began widening t
heir arsenal of instruments accordingly\, utilizing everything from World W
ar I pump organs to crotales in the process. After making their independent
debut with 2007's What the Crow Brings\, the band rang in 2008 by temporar
ily relocating to Block Island -- a remote location 12 miles off the Rhode
Island coast -- to record an album with producer Jesse Lauter. The stark\,
serene environment proved to be an appropriate for the music\, which the ba
nd initially self-released under the title Oh My God\, Charlie Darwin. As t
heir buzz continued to build\, and the Low Anthem signed a contract with No
nesuch Recordings and reissued Oh My God in 2009\, supporting the release w
 ith a string of performances at summer festivals.\n\nBoston\, MA 02215 - U

backyard from bare land to full-blown animal & veggie paradise!\n\nThe book
\, Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer\, is newly released\, and we

d Joan teaches classes on the subject at Codman Farms in Lincoln. But be su
re to check your town laws! As many of you may have read\, there is an on-g

 n\nSo join us right after work on Friday\, November 13th at 5:30pm. We'll h
ave some light nibbles\, a little cider\, and enjoy the reading & discussio

SUMMARY:Crude
DESCRIPTION:Boston International/Arthouse Movie Meetup Group\n\nCrude by Jo
e Berlinger (2009\, 105 min). \n\nGo inside the story of the "Amazon Cherno
byl" case\, in which 30\,000 indigenous Amazon rainforest dwellers filed a
lawsuit against corporate giant Chevron-Texaco: the oil company fights alle
gations of increasing health problems\, birth defects\, and destruction of
their indigenous way of life. Although our sympathy lies with the indigenou
s people and their lawyer\, Pablo Fajardo\, Berlinger presents this epic en
vironmental law cases from multiple points of view\, including interviews w
ith Chevron-Texaco’s lawyer and environmental scientists. The case\, whose
battleground spread from the court to the jungle and to three different con
tinents\, grew to epic proportions\, attracting media attention and celebri
ty involvement. “Rarely have such conflicts been examined with the depth an
d power of Crude. These real characters and events play out on the screen l
ike a sprawling legal thriller” (Stephen Holden\, The New York Times).\n\nN
ew York Times Critics Review\n\nQUITO\, Ecuador — The multibillion-dollar l
egal case between Amazon peasants and Chevron over oil pollution in Ecuador
’s rain forest keeps unfolding more like a mystery thriller than a battle o
f briefs.\n\nEver since the oil giant released videos in August that were s
ecretly taped by two businessmen who seemed to have the ambition of feastin
g off the expected $27 billion in damages sought\, Ecuadorean officials and
Chevron have accused each other of gross improprieties\, including espiona
ge.\n\nThe Ecuadorean judge hearing the case recused himself after he appea
red in the recordings discussing the case and potential damages. He was ret
urned to the case by another judge\, but he was then removed again.\n\nThe
two mysterious businessmen\, who used watches and pens implanted with buggi
ng devices to make the recordings\, have refused to explain their motivatio
ns for going to the furtive meetings in Quito and a jungle outpost to discu
ss a bribery plot. And now\, with questions mounting\, one of them has enli
sted a lawyer who has represented Barry Bonds.\n\nIn recent days the plot h
 as thickened further. . . \n\nFollowing the film\, we'll go to a local eate
ry to discuss all manners of Crude topics. Look for John to be holding a p
athetic MEETUP Sign in the lobby outside the theater after the film.\n\n\n\
 nFor those attending Tom's Meetup\, 1920's Dada Music Extravaganza\, note t
hat Discussion with the director follows the Nov. 7 screening of Crude at 3

SUMMARY:Reduce Stress & Improve Self-Esteem Through Self-Hypnosis
DESCRIPTION:Get More Out of Life!\n\nImagine what your life would be like i
f you had a tool that could help you:\n\n* Reduce your level of stress and/
or anxiety in just minutes.\n\n* Improve your self-esteem.\n\n* Easily find
things (i.e. your car keys) that you’ve misplaced.\n\n* Improve your perfo
rmance and motivation.\n\n* Take Charge of your life.\n\n* Achieve all this
and more in just 5 – 10 minutes a day.\n\nIn this 2 hour Workshop you will
learn how to quickly put yourself into a deep hypnotic trance. The deep re
laxed state that is created in hypnosis quickly slows down the mind and the
body\, which quickly reduces your levels of stress and anxiety.\n\nHypnosi
s puts us in direct contact with our subconscious mind. Two parts of our su
bconscious are our identity and our habits. Our identity is how we see ours
elves\, how we see the world and how we think the world sees us. Our habits
are the thousands of behaviors we have every day\; most serve us well\, so
me stop us from getting what we want or harm us. By connecting with the sub
conscious mind through self-hypnosis we can more efficiently change our ide
ntity (the way we feel about ourselves) and our habits than we can through
will power or any other part of he conscious mind.\n\nBecause of the nature
of this workshop it is limited to 6 participants at a cost of $50 per pers
on.\n\nHere's what a recent participant has to share about this workshop: \
nWow! The self-hypnosis workshop was incredibly powerful! I am so amazed th
at so much information and practice was packed into two hours! I left with
the most amazing feeling of calm\, centeredness that pervaded for my entire
night. Right away at home after leaving the workshop I felt a direct flow
of insights from my place of "inner knowing". \n\nI am writing this on the
next day and I have already used the self-hypnosis technique for three two
minute sessions of hypnosis\, and it's working! This tool could not have co
me at a more needed time for me as I have felt frustrated that I could not
make faster progress in changing my "inner stories" with talk therapy alone
. I realize now that I need to bypass my conscious mind and access my subco
nscious directly. \n\nThe techniques we learned during the workshop are sim
ple yet powerful! Glenn has an excellent ability to lead you through this w
ork. He creates a safe\, comfortable environment and fully explains how hyp
notherapy works. He then personalizes the hypnosis for each of the particip
ants and guides you through several practices to ensure that you walk out o
f the workshop with the techniques in place. Glenn also provided each of us
with clear written directions and an audio CD to use in order to deepen th
e practice. Wow! I am incredibly impressed with the potential of this tool.
I believe that I have found the next crucial piece in my journey towards s
 elf empowerment and happiness!\n\nNeedham\, MA 02494 - USA\n\nFriday\, Nov

our own experiences. And we'll spend a little time listening to several mu
sical settings of the psalms\, from different cultures\, languages\, and ti
me periods.\n\nIf you have favorite psalms or proverbs\, or ones you'd be p

SUMMARY:ARE WE ON A DATE?
DESCRIPTION:Inquisitive Minds\n\nA close friend of mine went out with a gir
l on what he thought was a date. During the comedy show that they went to w
atch\, the comedian asked them “so are guys you on a date”? To my friend’s
surprise the girl said NO almost at the same time my friend said YES. In re
trospect it has become quite a funny incident for us and we often joke abou
t it\, But on the other hand it raises one of the most difficult question o
f a single person’s life trying to infiltrate into the complex world of dat
ing “How do I know it’s a Date”? \n\nSay you went out with someone for dinn
er followed by a movie but you have not talked explicitly about it being a
romantic date or not. Now you are stressed and confused how to approach th
e evening. If you ask openly you might be labeled strange and desperate but
on the other hand if you act too casual the other one will think you are n
ot interested. This seems to be a common concern for many of our members n
ot only because it is complex but also due to the fact we have members from
different part of the world and everywhere the concept of dating is percei
ved differently.\n\nThe aim of this fun and relaxing discussion is to share
our personal experiences and stories with the goal that by doing so we wil
l not only be able to learn from each other but also probably by the end of
the discussion we will be able to formulize a pragmatic theory to his oth
erwise in comprehendible problem.\n\n\nCome join us for an exciting evening
of fun\, relaxing and exciting discussion. \n\nSIDE NOTE:\nIn an episode o
f the sitcom Frasier\, Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) accepts a dinner invitation
from an attractive new co-worker\, played by Virginia Madsen\, ostensibly
to discuss some promotional ideas. He later learns that she has been asking
others about his dating status. Frasier spends the entire evening trying d
esperately to figure out if he's on a romantic date or simply an after-hour
s business meeting. When asked to make himself more comfortable in her hote
l room\, he's not sure if she is being polite or making a romantic overture
. If he guesses wrong\, he may find himself either offending a platonic co-
worker or disappointing a romantic dating partner.\n\nLocation: \nDiesel Ca
