SUMMARY:Trivia Nite at The Blue Mermaid
DESCRIPTION:Portsmouth Newcomers\n\nLet's play Pop Quiz Team Trivia\, the g
ame where useless knowledge pays!\n\nPub trivia has been a big hit all over
the nation for several years now and there is no indication that it's goin
g to let up. Are you an expert in some arcane knowledge? Do you know who or
  what the tallest\, oldest\, fastest\, longest\, smallest\, widest is? Then
you just may be a ringer.\n\nOur DJ Phil will ask questions in such areas
 as Literature\, Science (shout SCIENCE)\, Sports\, Geography\, Music\, Ente
 rtainment\, TV\, Movies\, History\, and more. In teams of up to 5 members w
e select our answers and make our bids. It's the bidding that makes the gam
e so interesting\, in each round we can bid 1\, 3\, 5\, or 7 points for our
answer but we can only bid each score once\, manage your bidding well and
beat other teams even when you don't know many of the answers!\n\nOur ancho
r team the Corner Crüe has been playing since February 2008 and are now thr
ee-time defending monthly champions! Prizes are shared among team members w
ho return for another game.\n\nNot only are there prizes for winning\, Phil
usually has T-shirts\, Ball Caps\, Chocolate or other swag to give away du
ring the evening. Even the lowest point team wins as the team in last place
in each round gets a prize (Yes\, I've taken home a few of those).\n\nSo\,
join us for a game of Pop Quiz Team Trivia\; you just might have fun.\n\nT
ry to arrive before 6:30 p.m. to secure a table and enjoy happy hour. Teams
are up to groups of five or less.\nThen come up with a team name\, make it
something you like as teams earn monthly points as well as weekly game poi
nts.\n\nCaribbean-inspired fare available as well as a wide selection of be
er\, wine and mixed drinks. Game sponsor beverages are happy hour priced al
l night.\n\nLocation: The Blue Mermaid is part of "The Hill"\, a cluster of
historic homes located at High Street off Hanover Street behind the Hilton
Garden Inn across from the Parking Garage and close to all the shopping an
 d activities of downtown Portsmouth.\n\nDirections from I-95: Take exit 7 t
oward downtown Portsmouth. Travel approximately 1 mile on Market Street. Ta
ke a right onto Russell Street (at the corner of the Sheraton Hotel) at the
first stop sign you will face "The Hill" and a large parking lot. Enter th

the blue building with yellow lettering.\n\nParking:\nA shared parking lot
rests beside the building. Free parking is permitted for Blue Mermaid patro

low lines.\n\nOther parking options include the Hanover Street parking gara

SUMMARY:Recovery\, Inc. Meetup
DESCRIPTION:Recovery\, Inc.\n\nRecovery International meetings help people
who are dealing with anxiety\, depression\, stress\, and anger issues. Meet
ings use cognitive behavioral tools in a group setting to teach self manage
ment and self leadership. Meetings occur every week\, last for about an hou
r and a half\, are open to everyone\, and there is no charge to attend. Rec
overy International is a peer led organization that was found by the psychi
atrist Dr. Abraham Low in 1937. They are over 600 weekly Recovery meetings
in the United States. At the weekly meetings\, members learn and practice
tools to dealing with the symptoms that interfere with their daily lives.
The group format provides hope as the experienced members demonstrate their
improvement to the new members. The meeting also provides social contact f
or those isolated by fear and depression.\n\nThe Recovery International mee
ting at the First Baptist Church of Melrose was founded in October 1986 an
d has been meeting every Monday night ever since. Although we meet in their
facilities\, we are not affiliated with the church and there is no religio
us component to Recovery's tools. Meeting members come to Recovery with a v
ariety of nervous and emotional issues and symptoms such as panics\, sleep
problems\, worry\, and feelings of hopelessness. They find Recovery through
doctor's referrals\, newspaper current events listing\, community outreach
\, and of course listings like this on the internet.\n\nRecovery Internatio
nal is a program of the non-profit organization Abraham Low Self Help Syste
ms\, based out of Chicago. Please visit the national web site for more info
rmation on Recovery's tools\, stories of hope\, and our interactive forum.
Questions can also be addressed to the meeting's organizer\, Didi.\n\nThe m
ost difficult step is coming to that first meeting. Everyone at the meeting
is there to improve or maintain their mental health. Each one of them had
to summon the courage to walk in that door the first time. And when they di
d so they learned their first tool\, to endorse themselves for their effort
 s to get well.\n\nwww.lowselfhelpsystems.org\n\nMelrose\, MA 02176 - USA\n

SUMMARY:YOGAlicious Living Meetup
DESCRIPTION:YOGAlicious Living\n\nLiving a Life of Peace and Balance is Yum
my! Choose a Yoga-licious Body\, Mind\, and Spirit in which life is Delicio
us instead of Disgusting. Learn to love your body and trust its wisdom and
quiet your mind.\n\nLearn the basics from the beginning\; an introduction t
o the 8 limbs of yoga (props/modifications\, pranayama-breath\, details of
  anasas-poses\, meditation-chanting & mantras\, introduction to chakra/ener
gy system\, yamas and niyamas\, pratyahara/dharana and more). This is a Kri
palu ~ Heart Centered Gentle Yoga.\n\nJournaling will be encouraged to reco
rd the manifestations and rewards gained by beginning this journey inward.
A picture will be taken at the beginning and end of the class (optional).\n
\nRSVP- to sign up contact Connie at (978)335-2409 or lightworkheals@yahoo
.com. $15 per class\n\nThis is a series intended to be taken in consecutive
order\, however\, if a class must be missed\, we can arrange a make up cla
ss or you can attend the class you miss in the next 8 wk cycle or we can ar
range a make up class during the week before the next class.\n\nNormally I
would request that the $150 fee for the class be paid in advance. This sign
als to the universe that you are ready to make changes and once you registe
r you will notice a shift and changes begin occurring. However considering
the economy I am leaving the option open to what works for you. You can RSV
P and pay $15 per class - although this is not intended to be a drop in cla
ss. With that being said\, join any class you would like. \n\nI am looking
for commitment. If you don't commit you will not reap the full benefits of
yoga and still might think it is not for you... YOGA IS FOR EVERY BODY! Kri
palu is a gentle nurturing yoga practice.\n\nFIRST CLASS IS STRONGLY SUGGES
TED! it is a foundation class focusing on safety\, use of props\, when to m
 odify poses\, and foundational asanas/poses & pranayama/breath). \n\nYou a
re encouraged to begin gathering your own supplies (mat\, blocks\, strap\,
eye pillow/cover\, cushion/pillow\, and blanket) Mats are provided and a li
mited supply of props are available\,\n\nThis is for 2 reasons.\nIt is FLU
SEASON... enough said...\n\nThe #1 reason is that this class is to give you
information so that you can begin a yoga practice that you will make a par
t of your daily routine. MAT IS NOT OPTIONAL. It is required for safety so
that you will be secure and not slip out of the poses and get hurt. The pro
ps are helpful in the beginning\; as you build balance\, flexibility\, and
strength you will not need props as much. You will want your own "tools" so
that you can do yoga anywhere anytime YOU need to. I currently have props
for 6 people and will be obtaining more eventually. Contact me for cost eff
icient ways/ideas to find props. BELOW FIVE at Liberty Tree Mall has straps
$4\, blocks $5\, mats $5. A folded wash cloth for an eye cover or a men's
tie or belt for a strap). Mats range $5-65\n\nYOGA IS NOT A COMPETITIVE SPO
RT AND IS NOT A RELIGION.\n\nIf there is pain there is no gain.\n\n"Regardl
ess of your personal spiritual beliefs\, we know that there is a divine and
universal intelligence behind all of life. It is from this infinite intell
igence that we all come and it is to this that we all go back to when we le
ave this life. This ‘invisibleness’.. is something – a force or an energy t
hat we are always connected to because it constitutes the very essence of y
our life. When you are connected to this dimension of yourself you are unit
ed with the very intelligence that creates and sustains all of creation.\n\
nDiscovering and connecting to your higher self does not require and specia
l mountain retreats or far eastern meditations. It simply requires that you
look deep within yourself. Discovering your higher self and finding God in
your life is not something that you have to go and find somewhere outside
yourself. Think of it this way: electricity has always been available to us
  – even to prehistoric cavemen. Only when we discovered it\, were we able t
o use it. Your higher self and divine guidance is\, and has always been ava
ilable to you. You simply have to discover it to be able to use it."\nDinga

beat other teams even when you don't know many of the answers!\n\nOur ancho

SUMMARY:New Years Day Resolution Hike - Pennybrook Trail
DESCRIPTION:North Shore Active Dogs Meetup Group\n\nLet's start 2010 with a

leasant and the group agrees\, we can extend the walk to 90 minutes. We wi
ll avoid the ponds\, as the ice is questionable this time of year. The tra
il might be slippery\, so traction devices are recommended if you have them
(e.g. stabilicers\, yaktrax).\n\nCome prepared with one resolution to shar
e - or one affirmation of how you'd like to see the world improved in 2010!
\n\nAny changes to our schedule due to inclement weather will be posted her

\n\nNEW HAMPSHIRE SERIES:\nThe Carter and Wildcat Range \n\nEVENT ORGANIZER

his trip: jmmoran {{AT}} nycap.rr.com\, Mobile 281-5882. FINISH YOUR NH 48
 4\,000 LIST WITH US!\n\nTRIP SUMMARY / UPDATES (12/12/2009 5:00 p.m.): Thi
s trip is a cross-posted event with Hudson Valley Hikers (HVH) and Hiking
Mates CHALLENGE (HMC) and is planned in conjunction with the Mt. Washington
ascent the previous day. After failing to get these peaks in early Decemb
er\, here's another chance to reach them.\n\nThe Carter Dome Trail leads fr
om the Nineteen-Mile Brook Trail about 1.9 miles from Route 16 to the summi
t of Carter Dome\, partly in conjunction with the Carter-Moriah Trail. It i
s the former fire tower access path and provides the easiest and most popul
ar day hike of the Carters\, although there is substantial elevation gain.
  Wildcat Mountain has five summits — A\, B\, C\, D\, and E — along Wildcat
Ridge\, which curves two miles (3 km) to the south and west. Both A\, at 4\
 ,422 feet (1\,348 m)\, and D\, at 4\,062 feet (1\,238 m)\, are considered "
 four-thousand footers". B\, with an elevation of 4\,305 feet (1\,312 m)\, a
nd C\, at 4\,285 feet (1\,306 m)\, lack the topographic prominence to be co
nsidered more than subpeaks of Wildcat A. Likewise\, the E peak\, at 4\,046
feet (1\,233 m)\, is considered to be a subpeak of the higher D peak (the
E peak was formerly believed to be the higher of the two\, and used to appe
ar on the official list of four-thousand footers\, but current topographic
maps reveal the D peak to be the higher summit). \n\n\nWinter view along t

SUMMARY:Snowshoe at Kenoza Lake - Haverhill\, MA
DESCRIPTION:Rockingham Outdoors and More...\n\nHopefully we'll all have rec
overed from New Years Celebrations by now \n\nI'm also hoping for snow so t
his will be a snowshoe! If it turns into a walk I'll email the group... \n
\nFrom what I remember of the 4-5 mile loop around the lake\, it is fairly
level with a few small hills (and when I say small\, I mean the time it tak
es to reach the top of an incline is less than a minute before leveling and
eventually going back down). To complete the loop\, we will have to walk
a short distance on the road (about 1/3 to 1/2 of a mile). \n\nDirections
: From Route 495\, take exit 52 (for Route 110) towards Haverhill. Winneke
nni Park/Castle entrance is on the left side of Route 110 about a mile sout
h of 495. \n\nLet's park near the entrance and tennis courts. \n\n*********
 **************************************************************************
 \nFrom the city's site: http://www.ci.haverhill.ma.us/departments/econ/cons
ervation/trails/winnekenni.htm \n\nWinnekenni Park (the name comes from the
Algonquin dialect\, which means "very beautiful") is a hilly\, city-owned
conservation area of more than 700 acres. Upon entering the Park\, you will
see the Basin and Kenoza Lake behind it. These two bodies of water make up
approximately half of the Park area. Plug Pond is situated in the southwes
t part of the park\, and Winnekenni Castle is somewhat in between Kenoza La
ke and Plug Pond. It is within a few miles of downtown Haverhill and includ
es about 10 miles of fairly easy walking trails. It has been a favorite rec
reation spot\, dating as far back as the early 1800's\, even though it was
privately owned at that time. In the late 1800's it became Haverhill's">Hav
erhill's first Public Park. \n\nWinnekenni Basin is the small body of wate
r at the entrance to the Park. Only fishing and ice skating (when ice is de
clared safe) are allowed. \n\n\nKenoza Lake was originally known as "Great
Pond"\, being renamed in 1859 by John Greenleaf Whittier as "Kenoza Lake"\,
which means "Lake of the Pickerel". It has been part of Haverhill's">Haver
 hill's Water Supply since 1871. Fishing\, Boating\, Hunting\, Bathing\, Wad
ing\, Swimming\, and ice-related activities are prohibited. The Lake's pump
ing station is located on its northern shore\, which is off-limits to the p
ublic. \n\n\nLake Saltonstall (Plug Pond) is a favorite recreation spot. Ac
tivities for Haverhill Residents only\, during the summer months include a
swimming area\, municipal boating program\, picnicking and bathroom facilit
ies. It is also a state-stocked fishing area which is open to residents\, a
s well as non-residents\, year round. In 1976\, the city acquired 50.8 acre
s of Conservation land between Winnekenni Castle and Plug Pond. For informa
tion pertaining to Boating and Fishing Programs\, contact the Recreation De
 partment at 978-374-2389. \nThe Castle: \nDr. James R. Nichols\, a local p
hysician and inventor\, built the Castle in 1873-1875 as a summer home at t
his farm which he named Winnekenni. The idea for the original castle came f
rom England. The Castle was sold to the city in 1895. In 1967\, after a dev
astating fire destroyed the aging building\, a group of citizens formed the
Winnekenni Foundation\, which is still in existence today. Its goal was to
completely refurbish the interior of the building\, and make it and its su
rrounding grounds available to the public for cultural and educational even
ts. Call the Winnekenni Foundation at 978-521-1686 for castle rental charge
 s and policies. Castle address: 347 Kenoza Ave\, Haverhill\, MA 01830 \n\n
The Trails: \nThere is a map of the Winnekenni walking trails posted on the
building\, near the tennis courts\, at the entrance to the Park. Hiking\,
jogging\, and cross-country skiing are popular activities on the trails. Pl
ease stay on marked trails. \n\nCastle Trail: The main road is Castle Road
\, which is what you are driving on when you enter the Park. It continues u
p the hill to Winnekenni Castle. You can drive on this as far as the Castle
(3/5 mile)\, where it now becomes Castle Trail. There is no parking on Cas
tle Road. From this point\, Castle Trail leads down towards the Lake and jo
ins Dudley Porter Trail (2/5 mile). \n\n\nDudley Porter Trail begins on th
e running track at the Basin and continues along the shore. It leads around
Kenoza Lake\, and ends on Kenoza Street\, across from Northern Essex Commu
nity College (NECC) (2 ½ miles). \n\n\nShore Trail branches off the Dudley
Porter Trail (after 1 ½ miles on Dudley Porter)\, and continues north alon
g the Lake where it joins the Dudley Porter Trail at NECC (4/5 mile). \n\n
\nPlug Pond Trail begins at Castle Parking Area\, and heads south to the po
pular recreation area (2/5 mile). The Merrill Trail begins along Kenoza Str
eet by NECC and continues ½ mile to the back of the Merrill House site. \n
Conservation Area Regulations: \nThe Winnekenni Park Conservation Area is o

SUMMARY:Porstmouth Boat Share Kick-off Meetup
DESCRIPTION:Portsmouth Boat Share\n\nLet's hoist a couple of beers at The P
ress Room\, talk over our ideas of locations\, type of boat and "lifestyle"
that we're after. Once we set a direction for our summer fun\, we can alw
ays head upstairs to dance to the band.\n\nAs a starter\, I'm envisioning a
group of ten or so 35-55 y/o fun\, cool\, single people who drop in during
the week or hang out on weekends. The boat would act as a floating condo\
, with room to sleep several people\, and drink several more. In the good
weather there would be plenty of deck space to spend the night under the st
ars\, sharing a sleeping bag or a blow up mattress. For those wanting more
  privacy\, get a room\, for pete's sake! - (kidding) there would be a cabi
n and bathroom. During the week someone would be likely to have the boat t
o themselves. On the weekend\, you would expect to have company and share
 the space\, duties\, cleanup responsibilities\, food purchase\, cooking\, e
tc\, as much as you care to partake. Rights to operate the boat would be
based on having a NH boater's license and demonstrating adequate boat handl
ing knowledge and skills. Otherwise\, youre a passenger and someone else i
s the designated driver. Deadbeats\, people disrespectful of other's right
to enjoyment\, drama fiends and users would be ejected with a full return
of their share of the investment value once another member is lined up. Ke
eping the peace and doing the right thing will be everyone's responsibility
and membership will happen at my discretion. Sorry\, as a former Merchant
Marine\, I know every ship can only have one captain. Law of the sea.\n\n
Come prepared with specific boat models and pictures inside/out that you en
vision meeting our needs. I'll have marina options and prices and a basic
plan of how this would work\, day-to-day. We'll take it from there as a gr
oup and see what's going to work best.\n\nGet ready for your seaside advent
