SUMMARY:SMARTS MOUNTAIN "New Hampshire 52 with a View" & Hood Museum of Art
 \, Dartmouth
DESCRIPTION:The New England Hiking Meetup\n\nSmarts Mountain & Hood Museum
 of Art \nDistance: 7.6 miles roundtrip\nBook Time: 5 hours\nPace:
will be hiking at a moderate plus pace \nDifficulty: ea
 sy\n\nFeatured on the "New Hampshire 52 with a View"\, Smarts Mountain\, at
3\,240 feet\, offers the closest taste of boreal forest in the Upper Valle
 y. Standing alone\, Smarts has a feel about it similar to the higher White
Mountain peaks further north. With its open quartzite ledges on Lambert Rid
ge and old fire tower on the summit\, Smarts offers "a-lot-of-bang-for-the-
buck" and affords plenty of interesting views across the surrounding countr
 yside.\n\nLocation:\nabout 15 miles from Hanover\, NH / Dartmouth College\n
\nTrip Description:\nTwo trails leave the parking area (0.0 miles) — the wh
ite-blazed Lambert Ridge Trail (AT) on the left\, and the Ranger Trail (for
mer AT) straight ahead. For the ascent\, we will follow the white-blazed La
mbert Ridge Trail and descend the Ranger Trail.\n\nThe Lambert Ridge Trail
ascends quite steeply right from the beginning\, with several switchbacks h
elping to reduce the grade.\n\nAt 0.3 miles\, the first major view is reach
ed. Underfoot is a pinkish\, grayish\, white-banded rock known as quartzite
. Comprised almost entirely of former beach sand\, this quartzite dates fro
m the time roughly 400 million years ago when this part of New England stoo
d at the edge of a chain of volcanic islands. Quartzite\, because of its un
usual hardness\, tends to remain as high ridges long after surrounding rock
has worn away. The ridge that forms the eastern edge of the Connecticut Ri
ver valley\, from Moose to Moosilauke\, is comprised in part of the same ty
pe of quartzite underfoot here.\n\nThe trail continues along the spine of L
 ambert Ridge for the next 1.3 miles\, with frequent views.\n\nAt 1.6 miles\
, the trail descends to the left off the last ledge of Lambert Ridge\, and
enters a swampy col.\n\nAt 2.9 miles\, smarts proper has been reached. The
trail begins to rise straight and steeply.\n\nAt 3.5 miles\, the Lambert Ri
dge Trail intersects with the Ranger Trail. Follow the upper Ranger Trail (
also blazed in white) to the left.\n\nAt 3.6 miles\, a sharp switchback to
the right begins the ascent of the summit ridge\, and also marks the beginn
ing of the transition from the beech and maple of the northern hardwood for
est into the spruce and fir of the boreal forest.\n\nAt 4.0 miles\, after s
everal switchbacks\, occasionally crossing wet ledges\, the trail crests th
e long east-west summit ridge. At the trail junction here\, a side trail le
ads right 0.1 miles to a tent platform and privy. On wind-free (and bug-les
 s) nights\, this site is an excellent place for sleeping out under the star
 s.\n\nAt 4.1 miles\, here on the summit\, a firetower (abandoned in 1976) a
ffords panoramic views of the Upper Valley and the White Mountains beyond.
Just past the fire tower\, the old ranger cabin is maintained as a shelter
for camping. A side trail\, formerly the AT and now blazed blue\, leads to
Mike Murphy Spring in 0.1 miles. Mike was the last ranger stationed on the
mountain.\n\nThe Appalachian Trail north continues straight\, east\, to the
right of the cabin. Ambitious hikers with more time and transportation may
want to continue north along the sloping ridge that connects Smarts to Eas
tman Ledges and finally to the summit of Mount Cube\, seven miles away.\n\n
To Return To the Trailhead:\nFrom the summit (0.0 miles)\, retrace your ste
ps along the Upper Ranger Trail\, past the tent platform side trail\, and d
escend to the junction with the Lambert Ridge Trail.\n\nAt 0.6 miles\, cont
inue straight down the Ranger Trail (formerly the AT\, and now blazed blue\
, when blazed at all). The trail switchbacks across rock slabs as it descen
ds to the valley floor. You may notice an occasional rock cairn standing of
f in the woods on the side of the trail. These cairns at one time supported
telephone poles that held the cable linking the firetower with the valley.
\n\nAt 2.0 miles\, after crossing a small brook\, the ruins of an old garag
e are on the right. Fire rangers used to park their cars here. The trail fr
om here follows the old jeep road above the western bank of Grant Brook.\n\
nAt 3.5 miles\, reach the parking lot and lower junction with the Lambert R
idge Trail.\n\nGEAR:\nAlthough the forecast calls for temps in the low 50's
with clear skies\, please be sure to pack and dress for winter like condit
ions. Ice and snow may be present so micro spikes are highly recommended. \
n\nWAIVER:\nAs a condition of your voluntary participation in this activity
you acknowledge and agree to the following: this activity involves inheren
 t risks that can cause property damage\, injury\, illness\, disability\, an
d/or death to participants and/or others\; you assume all risk associated w
ith this activity\; you are responsible for having the necessary knowledge\
, skills\, abilities\, clothing\, and equipment to safely participate in th
is activity\; you know and will follow the Hiker Responsibility Code descri
bed at www.hikesafe.com\; the leader(s) of this activity are volunteers\; a
nd you release\, hold harmless\, and indemnify the leader(s) and all member
s of this group from any and all claims for property damage\, injury\, illn
 ess\, disability\, and/or death - including those caused by negligence and/
or other reasons.\n\nDIRECTIONS:\nTake Route 10 north from Hanover into Lym
 e. Coming around the green in Lyme\, bear right at the white church and fol
low signs for the Dartmouth Skiway. Pass through Lyme Center 1.8 miles from
the green in Lyme\, and continue winding around for 1.3 more miles to wher
e the wide gravel Lyme-Dorchester Road forks to the left. Take this fork fo
r 1.8 miles until\, just before the iron bridge over Grant Brook\, a small
parking lot is reached on the left. Orange signs mark the trailheads. Park
here.\n\nHood Art Museum\nFollowing the hike\, those that are interested ma
y join me for a visit to Dartmouth College's excellent Hood Museum of Art.
It is one of the oldest and largest college museums in the country. The mu
seum is free and open to 5:00 pm on Sunday.\nhttp://hoodmuseum.dartmouth.ed

SUMMARY:Parker Wheeler's blues dance party at The Grog in Newburyport
DESCRIPTION:Trailblazers- A Seacoast Singles Meetup Group\n\nHey everyone!\
n\nFor 19 years now\, Sunday nights at The Grog really rock and have become
our favorite night of the weekend there. The large crowd is welcoming and
you feel like you're at a friend's house party (a really great house party
!). On November 8th\, Parker Wheeler's Blues Party presents blues artists
Roberto Morbioli and Diane Blue with Sax Gordon Beadle\, Tom West\, Wolf Gi
nandes\, and Steve Bankuti. Come out to enjoy great music and join our Mee
tup dance circle for great exercise\, fun\, and laughs! If you like to dan
ce and move\, you surely won't be disappointed here! \n\nThe cover charge
is $7.00 and is collected at the top of the stairs. When it's $7 instead o
f the usual $5\, get ready for a fabulous show! The band starts playing sh
ortly after 6:00pm and ends at 10:00pm so it's not too late an evening if y
ou have to get up for work Monday morning. It's important that we arrive a
t 6pm so we can get downstairs and possibly get a table and not have to wai
t in line\, which sometimes happens. \n\nDinners\, appetizers\, and drinks
can also be ordered downstairs while the band plays.\n\nRefer to thegrog
.com for more info and detailed driving directions. Driving time is 1/2
hour from the Portsmouth Circle in Portsmouth\, NH and about 1/2 hour from
the 128/I-95 junction in Peabody\, MA. You can find parking on any of the
side streets if The Grog's lot is full. Newburyport has a safe\, walkable
 downtown at night.\n\nSee you there!\n\nRich\n\nNewburyport\, MA 01950 - U

SUMMARY:Recovery\, Inc. Meetup
DESCRIPTION:Recovery\, Inc.\n\nRecovery International meetings help people
who are dealing with anxiety\, depression\, stress\, and anger issues. Meet
ings use cognitive behavioral tools in a group setting to teach self manage
ment and self leadership. Meetings occur every week\, last for about an hou
r and a half\, are open to everyone\, and there is no charge to attend. Rec
overy International is a peer led organization that was found by the psychi
atrist Dr. Abraham Low in 1937. They are over 600 weekly Recovery meetings
in the United States. At the weekly meetings\, members learn and practice
tools to dealing with the symptoms that interfere with their daily lives.
The group format provides hope as the experienced members demonstrate their
improvement to the new members. The meeting also provides social contact f
or those isolated by fear and depression.\n\nThe Recovery International mee
ting at the First Baptist Church of Melrose was founded in October 1986 an
d has been meeting every Monday night ever since. Although we meet in their
facilities\, we are not affiliated with the church and there is no religio
us component to Recovery's tools. Meeting members come to Recovery with a v
ariety of nervous and emotional issues and symptoms such as panics\, sleep
problems\, worry\, and feelings of hopelessness. They find Recovery through
doctor's referrals\, newspaper current events listing\, community outreach
\, and of course listings like this on the internet.\n\nRecovery Internatio
nal is a program of the non-profit organization Abraham Low Self Help Syste
ms\, based out of Chicago. Please visit the national web site for more info
rmation on Recovery's tools\, stories of hope\, and our interactive forum.
Questions can also be addressed to the meeting's organizer\, Didi.\n\nThe m
ost difficult step is coming to that first meeting. Everyone at the meeting
is there to improve or maintain their mental health. Each one of them had
to summon the courage to walk in that door the first time. And when they di
d so they learned their first tool\, to endorse themselves for their effort
 s to get well.\n\nwww.lowselfhelpsystems.org\n\nMelrose\, MA 02176 - USA\n

SUMMARY:The Portsmouth Book Club November Meetup - Breakfast of Champions
DESCRIPTION:The Portsmouth Book Club Meetup\n\nOur November pick is Breakfa
st of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut. \n\nHere is a brief synopsis from Barnes
and Noble of Breakfast of Champions:\n\nDwayne Hoover\, a Midwestern autom
obile salesman\, with a troubled marriage\, meets Vonnegut's famous charact
er\, the hack writer\, Kilgore Trout\, on the eve of Trout's receiving the
Nobel Prize. Filmed in 1998 with Bruce Willis\, this is another of Vonnegut
's savage satires of middle American values and their racketeering. \n\nAnd
from the New York Times:\n\nYou have to hand it to Kurt Vonnegut Jr. In hi
s eighth novel\, Breakfast of Champions\, or Goodbye Blue Monday\, he perfo
rms considerable complex magic. He makes pornography seem like any old plum
bing\, violence like lovemaking\, innocence like evil\, and guilt like chil
d's play. He wheels out all the latest fashionable complaints about America
--her racism\, her gift for destroying language\, her technological greed a
 nd selfishness--and makes them seem fresh\, funny\, outrageous\, hateful\,
and lovable\, all at the same time. He draws pictures\, for God's sake--sim
ple\, rough\, yet surprisingly seductive sketches of everything from Volksw
agens to electric chairs. He weaves into his plot a dozen or so glorious sy
nopses of Vonnegut stories one almost wishes were fleshed out into whole bo
oks. He very nearly levitates.\n\nDON'T FORGET TO VOTE ON THE POLLS FOR A N

SUMMARY:Push for West Side Ice Arena Dog Park Site. No Dump for Us.
DESCRIPTION:Manchester DOG - Dog Park Meetup\n\nAlmost a whole year later a
site for the dog park hasn't even been chosen yet and is still being debat
ed. With the preferred top choice by the Lands and Building committee being
the landfill. The process has been hindered by improper political games b
eing played by certain alderman to try and get their way about this. To say
the least I would think just this one episode of several is scandalous in
it's implications. So if you don't want Manchester's first dog park to be
at the old dump read on. \n\nRuss Ouellete at a committee meeting on Sept.
1\, 2009 of the Lands and Buildings committee claimed he had done his home
work and held numerous meetings with residents and neighbors along Douglas
St. extention who live near the rail trail and because of issues with loose
dogs that these neighbors were adamantly opposed to having a dog park next
to the West Side Ice Arena. Based on the timing of when things had happe
nded in the past it seemed very unlikely to me and a few others that he wou
ld have actually have held these meetings for real. To test that theory an
d to do my own homework I decided to do my own survey which ended up being
 done on 3 days (10/22/09\, 10/24/09\, and 10/26/09). \n\nThe following were
quotes from the MCTV Gov video of the 9-1-09 meeting of the Lands and Buil
ding Committee of Russ Ouellette speaking in opposition to having the West
Side Ice Arena as a dog park site which is in his ward. He claims he has ha
d numerous meetings with the neighbors who live along the Douglas Street ex
tension area that borders the new paved river trail and that they are adama
ntly opposed to having a dog park at land that is in between the West Side
Ice Arena and the Kelly St. (Nazaire Byron) Bridge. The website from which
 the quotes were taken:\n\nhttp://manchestercommunitytv.pegcentral.com/playe
 r.php?video=60aa434e06622bb2e257ee2604408927\n\nThe first quote to understa
nd it starts at 6:06 of the video and the quote as written starts at approx
imately 6:36 of the video \n\n...The residents that live along\, especially
along the Douglas St. ah extension area. Ah I had\, ah I had a meeting wit
h the police and neighbors. I had numerous meetings down there\, ah about t
he situations that are occurring due to the Piscataquog Park\, the newness
of it\, I mean the river trail. Ahmm they are already having issues with do
gs off leashes running around all over the place over there. Ahhmmm. The ne
ighbors have expressed to me that they are adamantly opposed to a dog site
there\, a dog park there. I don't feel ah Mr. Chairman that that is a prope
r site because unless you do a lot of excavating of trees down in that neig
hborhood there really isn't a lot of ah room down in that area. Ah if you a
re going to have a dog park an off leash dog park you are going to want ope
n space. Ah. And not such a wooded area. Ahm I am under the understanding t
hat there is already a site that was approved by\, ah\, I'm not sure if it
was approved by this committee. But if it happened to be looked at and the
site which I would be in favor of on a vote of the full board would be the
Dunbarton Rd. area... \n\nThe second quote starts at 38:24 but to understan
d it better start watching at 36:06\n\nQuite frankly Mr Greazzo ah like Mr
Garrity I to am offended that you or your organization has not contacted th
is ward alderman. Or it's from my understanding the alderman from ward 10 w
hen the Bass Island site was being proposed. And how\, how did I find out a
bout it. Well\, you know what\, I did my homework as an alderman. That's my
job. And my job is to let the constituents know\, the constituents that I
represent\, that live in that neighborhood\, that this proposal\, is actual
ly a serious proposal that is going to be ah looked at for a dog park. So\,
yes I am going to go down there and meet with my constituents\, I am going
to go down there and meet with the neighbors. Unfortunately\, Sir you didn
't give me the courtesy of calling me to let me know\, that that's the site
that you wanted. Sir. So\, so\, man let me finish. So that way there\, I c
ould have set up a meeting with you. So you could have told the residents a
nd maybe and maybe you could have appeased\, appeased them but as of right
now there is now way that they want a dog park in that area and I am going
to fight\, for them\, my constituents to make sure that it doesn't happen o
n that site. Mr Chairman it's not the fact that I don't want it in my ward\
, or that I don't think any alderman has said they don't want it in their w
ard\, I think that it's the fact that we want to put it in the right\, righ
t place where if there is a dog park that has the insurance and meets all o
f the qualifications and that it will be successful and not fail due to the
residents that live around the area\, or\, or ah people not going to it so
I am highly offended\, highly offended\, that this alderman was not consul
ted by the organization. No phone call....... \n\nInterestingly enough Mr.
Ouellette doesn't bother even asking any neighbors living along Mercier Ave
.\, Paris Terrace\, and Chapleau Ave. who would live much close to the dog
park although up on top of a hill what they think of a dog park there.\n\nB
ack in Dec. of 08 Russ Ouellette was asked by Kelly Murphy another alderman
what he thought of a dog park at the West Side Ice Arena and his response
was. "No Way." Then the timing of when the recommendation from the Parks
Commission being for the West Side Ice Arena back in May and then being tur
ned down with out even being presented to the Lands and Buildings committee
because Russ Ouellette didn't want it there made it seem very unlikely he
did any meetings back then either. Then in late August when that site is p
roposed to pick from from 4 in all it didn't seem likely he would have both
ered to have meetings as he had already turned down the idea of a dog park
there 2 times before. Why ask residents what they want when you have alrea
dy decided twice that you don't want it there.\n\nSo I decided to do my own
survey to see if Russ Ouellette claims had any validity to them at all.\nO
f the 24 different addresses along Douglas St. extention where I could dete
rmine someone lived I was able to talk to at least one resident who lived a
t 21 of those addresses. 2 of the addresses that I didn't talk to were apa
rtment buildings up on a hill on the other side of the street and the rail
trail opposite these buildings was fenced in on both sides. It seemed very
unlikely that loose dogs from the trial would be bothering these people.
Plus as far as I could figure out the doorbells to these 2 buildings seemed
to be broken. The other address where I wasn't able to try to talk to som
eone but knew people lived there had a no trespassing sign facing the stree
 t. 3 additional different addresses as far as I could tell didn't seem to
have anyone living at those addresses (I know for sure 2 of these were vac
ant). \n \nI talked to a total of 28 different people\, some of whom live
d at the same address. I explained I had been a dog park advocate for over
a year and one of the sites we would like to be able to build a dog park s
ite was on empty land owned by the city in between the West Side Ice Arena
and the Kelly St. Bridge. For those who didn't know what a dog park was I
explained that to them as well\, giving some of the benefits of having a do
g park.\n \nI also asked everyone the following 3 questions to be answered
yes or no and also took notes on anything else they wanted to say.\n \n1.
Has Russ Ouellette your Ward 11 Alderman ever asked you if you would want a
dog park in between the West Side Ice Arena and the Nazaire Byron Bridge?\
 n \nThe results were: Yes - 3 people\; No - 25 people What makes th
ese results even more interesting is that 3 other people who had called to
talk to Russ about rail trail issues were never even asked about the dog pa
rk site. If Russ has claimed to have had numerous neighborhood meetings du
e to loose dogs running all over the place causing problems and the neighbo
rs along Douglas Street extention were adamantly opposed to the dog park si
te how could 25 people representing 18 different addresses repeatedly not b
e notified of these meetings? Maybe\, there weren't any? One person who s
ays he repeatedly called Russ to complain of the rail trail not being finis
hed right got no results from Russ to address his complaints and he was nev
er asked about the dog park site either.\n \n2. Have you ever had any pro
blems with loose dogs on your property due to the rail trail?\n \nThe resul
 ts were Yes - 12 people No - 15 people Not Sure - 1 person \n \n I
rresponsible dog owners not picking up after their dog's poop was one issue
both on the trail and some times on the person's property. 3 people ment
ioned loose vicious dogs bothering their dogs. Interestingly enough as th
e results of the next question will show 4 people out of the 12 reporting p
roblems related to dogs on the rail trail would still support having a dog
park at the West Side Ice Arena and 1 person reporting dog related problems
was neutral towards the dog park. Some issues related to the rail trail h
ad nothing to do with dogs whatsoever and some where related to the footbal
l/soccer field.\n \n3. Would you want a dog park at the West Side Ice Aren
 a?\n \nThe results were: Yes - 16 people\; No - 7 people\; Neutral
/Indifferent 5 people They really didn't care if there was one there or
not\, either way.\n\nTo see the rest of this message see the comment sectio
 n on the calendar page for this meetup.\n\nManchester\, NH 03101 - USA\n\n

SUMMARY:Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Melrose Moms Meetup Group\n\nThis will be our first meeting for
our Melrose Mama's Book Club! Our first book will be "Seeking Rapture: S
cenes from a Woman's Life" by Kathryn Harrison. Considering this first mee
tup is a little less than a month away\, I chose this book because it is a
short read (208 pages) and seems relevant to our lives (I hope). We will p
lan better for future meetups! \n\nBOOK OVERVIEW: \nA NEW YORK TIMES NO
TABLE BOOK In this exquisite book of personal reflections on a woman’s life
  as a child\, wife\, and mother\, Kathryn Harrison\, “a writer of extraordi
nary gifts” (Tobias Wolff)\, recalls episodes in her life\, exploring how t
he experiences of childhood recur in memory\, to be transformed and sometim
es healed through the lives we lead as adults. At the heart of Seeking Rapt
ure is the notion that a woman’s journey is a continuous process of transfo
rmation\, an ongoing transcendence and re-creation of self. \n \n\nI will
provide a few questions to get the discussion started but please feel free
to bring your own questions/topics that you would like to discuss. I know
it's hard to read with a little one so even if you don't quite finish the b
ook still join us! \n\nMelissa is hosting at her house. This is a BYOB e
vent. Guests may bring snacks as well. \n\nWe will also be taking sugg
estions for future book selections as well as any ideas you might have to i
