SUMMARY:The Laments by George Hagen
DESCRIPTION:Book Club: The Reading Group\n\nFrom Publishers Weekly\nEver in
search of greener pastures\, idealistic but frustrated engineer Howard Lam
ent drags his long-suffering wife\, Julia\, and their three sons from South
Africa to Rhodesia\, Bahrain\, England and America. The family's rootlessn
ess weighs most heavily on eldest son Will\, secretly adopted after a mater
nity ward mixup goes horribly awry\, who feels the odd man out in the face
of his constantly changing surroundings and the preternatural solidarity of
his twin brothers. Hagen\, a screenwriter and first-time novelist\, makes
the story a coming-of-age saga and familial drama\, often comic in tone but
also full of tragedy: car crashes\, a kidnapping\, death and dismemberment
. As the Laments give up their privileged status under apartheid and eventu
ally settle for downward mobility in the crass American suburbs\, Hagan mak
es their wanderings and expatriate identity crises a commentary on the vexe
d legacy of British colonialism. The narrative sometimes slows to allow the
Laments to hash out their liberal politics\, and some sketchily drawn char
acters (Lament's son Julius is memorable largely for his un-self-conscious
masturbatory rituals) die when their plot assignments are completed. Hagen
pokes fun at Albion's seed with comic clichés-the Rhodesians are racist Col
onel Blimps\, the English are soccer thugs\, the Americans are conformists\
, religious zealots or strident New Leftists. The Laments themselves\, sadd
led with the melancholy of postimperial decline\, are a spirited but slight
ly sad lot who wish for better lives. This is a funny\, touching novel abou
t the meaning of family\, with an oddly high body count. \n\nFrom School Li
brary Journal\nAdult/High School–The Lament family has a secret. Will is no
t the jolly\, glowing baby born to Julia and Howard in Rhodesia during the
1950s. He is the weak\, transparent preemie abandoned by his distraught mot
her when she kidnapped the Lament infant from the maternity ward. When the
woman and child die in an automobile accident\, the attending physician per
suades the stunned Laments to pretend the abandoned child is theirs\, and t
ake him home. For the Laments\, home is more a goal than a place. Soon Will
\, his younger twin brothers\, and his parents begin a series of disastrous
moves. Idealistic and impractical engineer Howard longs for a career that
will make full use of his inventive genius. Artistic\, progressive Julia wa
nts a perfect community. Leaving a prosperous situation in Rhodesia\, the f
amily follows Howard as he accepts ultimately unsatisfactory jobs around th
e world. Will minds the uprooting more than the others do as the family mov
es from Africa to Bahrain to England to the U.S.\, and his struggle to make
a place for himself is complicated by the family's downward economic spira
 l. Since much of the focus of the story is on hormone-driven teenage boys\,
the language and situations are often crude and sexually oriented. Despite
a surprising number of bizarre tragedies\, the book is full of humor\, and
the gradual development of the characters leads to a plausible and satisfy
 ing conclusion.–Kathy Tewell\, Chantilly Regional Library\, VA\n\n\nFrom Th
e Washington Post\nThis amiable if decidedly inconsequential book is being
published with a good deal more huzzah than generally attends the release o
f a first novel by an unknown author. ("The Laments is our biggest novel of
the summer\," says the publisher's press release.) The Laments does bear a
certain resemblance to John Irving's hugely successful The World According
to Garp -- a story about a peculiar but appealing family\, strange and vio
lent things happening to children\, people soldiering on despite life's inh
erent unfairness -- but no mention of these similarities is made in promoti
onal material for the book\, so apparently it will be left to the reader to
figure out what the fuss summer") is all about. \nGeorge Hagen\, now in hi
s mid-forties\, was born in Zimbabwe (then still known as Rhodesia)\, event
ually moving along to England\, New Jersey and Los Angeles. He worked in th
is last as a screenwriter\, though the only George Hagen who turns up in th
e Internet Movie Database was an actor who played the role of Wladek the Mi
ghty in a 1933 film called "The Way to Love\," starring the redoubtable Mau
rice Chevalier. Whatever. Hagen is an agreeable prose stylist with a nice\,
quiet sense of humor and a finely developed understanding of human frailty
and eccentricity. The Laments reads smoothly and pleasantly\, perhaps beca
use there's so little weight to it. \n\nThe story begins in South Africa in
the 1950s with the birth of a son\, their first child\, to Howard and Juli
a Lament. In the same hospital a woman named Mary Boyd has given birth to a
premature child\, also a boy\, who is in an incubator. The doctor gets the
idea that her low morale might be improved if she were permitted to nurse
the Laments' baby\, to which they reluctantly accede. Of course Mary Boyd f
alls in love with the baby -- the Laments haven't settled on a name for him
-- and attempts to abduct him. As they leave the hospital she\, her husban
d and the infant are all killed in an auto crash. \n\nSo the doctor\, playi
ng God -- or Mephistopheles\, depending on one's point of view -- persuades
the Laments to take the Boyd baby\, and rigs the paperwork to make it appe
ar he is their natural child. Heartsick and angry at the doctor's meddling\
, they succumb nonetheless to his insistence that "life deals tragedy and o
pportunity in equal measures\," that "only the brave and generous of heart
prevail\, and only the timid walk away from life's second chances." They ta
ke the baby and name him Will\, "because only a child with a will of astoni
shing fortitude could have survived such a sad beginning." \n\nThus begins
a picaresque tale that takes the little family -- eventually augmented by t
win boys named Marcus and Julius -- from South Africa to Rhodesia to Bahrai
n to England to New Jersey. Howard wants to be on the move: "He wasn't goin
g to be like his father\, living in the same house his whole life\; no\, he
and Julia were going to see the world like the other Laments. There was th
e Lament who sailed with Cook to the South Pacific\; and Great-grandfather
Frederick Lament\, who arrived in South Africa in 1899 and started the firs
t bicycle shop in Grahamstown. Howard's two older sisters had followed thei
r husbands to Australia\; and his cousin Neville always sent postcards from
his trips to Patagonia and Nepal. To be a Lament was to travel." \n\nWill\
, as he grows into adolescence\, sees it a bit differently: "To be a Lament
was to be a perpetual stranger." In every place to which it moves\, the fa
mily doesn't quite fit. Howard's career in engineering\, which began with g
reat hopes and ambitions -- "It was Howard's dream to design a purification
system as magnificent as the Roman aqueducts. A system in which water pass
ed through a complex series of enlarging and diminishing valves using only
gravity as a propellant" -- slowly dwindles into frustration and disappoint
ment. The visionary (or lunatic) who lures him to the United States vanishe
s\, and he is without a job. The "man who'd once planned to irrigate the Sa
hara" now putters around the house\, doing odd jobs badly and feeling sorry
for himself. \n\nJulia\, outspoken and competent\, loves her husband but\,
remembering how he had once "seemed so brilliant and knowledgeable\," now
realizes that she will have to take matters into her own hands. Not merely
are there three children to care for -- faithful\, sweet-tempered Will\, th
e mischievous twins -- but there are bills to be paid\, and the credit card
s are maxed out. She gets a job\, struggles to master it and restores a mea
sure of balance to the family. All along\, she and Howard "believed that th
ey shared the same course\, and followed the same stars." \n\nMeantime Will
is trying to figure out who he is. Literally\, in the sense that he doesn'
t look like his parents or brothers (he is "the solitary son between two co
uples") and therefore wonders if he is in fact adopted\; figuratively as we
ll as literally\, in the sense that his identity has been blurred by the fa
mily's ceaseless wandering and the adjustments he must constantly make to n
ew places and strange people. He sees his family as fragile and vulnerable\
, and assumes a nurse-like protectiveness toward it\; he is "so obsessed wi
th keeping the family together that he can't think about his own future." \
n\nHe is powerfully drawn to girls but doesn't quite know what to do around
them and goes through a succession of somewhat improbable attachments. One
\, to a girl named Sally\, ends when the family leaves England for New Jers
ey. Another\, to Marina\, ends when the Laments' fortunes take another slid
e and they have to move to a less expensive house a few miles away. Another
\, to a flower child named Dawn\, ends when Will at last figures out that s
he's a manipulative\, selfish little pill. Not until Minna comes along does
he get things more or less right\, permitting the book to close on a moder
ately happy note\, albeit one that leaves matters more hanging than resolve
 d. \n\nIt's a nice story about familiar and durable matters: family\, love\
, identity\, loyalty. George Hagen obviously has a good heart\, and he has
created people who share that admirable quality. As noted above\, the novel
reads easily and pleasantly\, but once it ends you're left with the sensat
ion of having been on a long journey that never went anywhere in particular
. It may be true\, as has been said\, that it is the journey that matters\,
not the destination\, but somehow that doesn't seem entirely the case with
  The Laments.\n\nAlexandria\, VA 22301 - USA\n\nThursday\, November 12 at

music that rocked a nation and a decade\, the group boldly and hilariously
defies the government that tries to shut them down.\n\nBroadcasting live 24

SUMMARY:Second Thursday of the Month Euchre Night
DESCRIPTION:The Alexandria Euchre Meetup Group\n\nWhy come out tonight? Be
cause you need to practice before heading home for the holidays!! If you ha
ve been lurking\, consider coming. The people change every month and the c
onversation flows easily over cards and drinks.\n\nWe are back at my house
for another evening of euchre. Feel free to bring a beverage of your choice
to share. If you want to bring a snack to share that is always welcome. An
ything goes and if you decide to bring a peach tart\, the group will probab
 ly not have any leftovers.\n\nPlease don't be a "no-show." I work hard to e
nsure we end up with the right numbers and when you don't show\, it means t
hat we have to rotate people. Ok\, maybe I don't work hard\, but we all wan
t to play 4-handed. If you sign-up\, and don't show\, then we either have
to rotate people or play 2 or 3 handed. It's not quite the same. \n\nWith
the flu season upon us\, please don't come if you are sick. We have to do
our part to stop the spread of H1N1. It is best to be a "no-show" and sen
d me an e-mail then to pass the flu on to others. \n\nThe house is metro a
ccessible and there is plenty of street property. We are will meet at 7 pm
for any newbie in the group and play will begin at 7:30. Last month\, we wo
und down about 10 as people were leaving for the long weekend. Come meet a

SUMMARY:Enterprise Applications and Architectures
DESCRIPTION:The Washington Semantic Web Meetup\n\nThis meetup will showcase
two exciting applications of semantic enterprise technologies. First\, Cor
y Casanave and Tom Digre of Model Driven Solutions will demonstrate publish
ing models and architectures as linked open data (LOD). This will be follow
ed with a case study and demo by Greg Bardwell of Innovative Query\, on Sem
antic Technology and Enterprise Applications.\n\nPublishing models and arch
itectures as LOD\n\nThis talk will focus on the business case and technolog
y support for publishing models and architectures as linked open data (LOD)
. The business case for this is that architectures are more valuable when t
hey are visible\, shared and linked. Publishing government architectural d
ata supports the president’s open government initiative in support of visib
ility\, collaboration and participation. Publishing as LOD fits with the e
merging thinking on the best way for government data to be published in an
accessible\, web based\, linkable and query able form based on standards.\n
\nSome background on how to leverage LOD for government architectures can b
e found in the ISWC presentation\, here: http://lib.modeldriven.org/MDLibra
 ry/trunk/Pub/Presentations/ISWC_OpenGovernmentArchitectures.ppt\n\nGIVE US
YOUR MODELS! If you will provide ModelDriven.org with your XMI or RDF base
d models with a license to publish the model data on the internet\, we will
publish them as part of our demonstration architectural data server at no
charge. This data could then also be published on data.gov or any other da
ta registry. Our EKB server is capable of publishing any XMI file (UML\, X
ML-Schema\, BPMN\, SoaML\, Etc) as LOD. More information on the EKB projec
t can be found here: http://portal.modeldriven.org/project/EKB\n\nWe will t
hen organize these models for presentation as data (with web page access as
well) on the demonstration server.\n\nSpeakers - Part 1\n\nCory Casanave (
Bio available soon)\n\nTom Tigre (Bio available soon)\n\nSemantic Technolog
y and Enterprise Applications\n\nThis talk will discuss how semantic techno
logy will be applied to a case within Air Force Acquisitions to build a Sem
antic Business Intelligence (SBI) system for their unstructured data. (http
 ://www.innovativequery.com/Case_Studies/index.html).\n\nTo start\, Innovati
ve Query will briefly present IQeXplore – a Semantic application platform w
ith tools and API for search/discovery\, visualization\, and collaboration.
This software is based on W3C standards and includes connectors to enterpr
ise data sources\, Natural Language Processing (NLP)\, semantic analysis wi
 th custom ontologies\, enterprise search integration\, full-text search\, c
ollaboration\, as well as UI for semantic discovery/navigation and visualiz
ation features. \n\nFor the Air Force\, as with any organization\, using a
nd getting the value out of 100+ data repositories is a timely and costly t
ask. Their goal is simple…. to make their vast amounts of unstructured text content understandable an
d to connect and explore unstructured information from contractual document
s with other data. Air Force Acquisitions understood they needed to go beyo
nd the ability to do simple keyword search and clustering to achieve their
goal. In short\, the Air Force wants to build a Semantic Business Intellige
nce (SBI) system incorporating their unstructured content with the ability
to identify and visualize relationships between people\, contracts\, organi
zations\, etc and the related projects\, reports\, and budgets.\n\nCome see
how use of semantic technology is solving real enterprise problems with a
linked open data approach within the military.\n\nSpeaker - Part 2\n\nGreg
 Bardwell\nFounder & CEO of Innovative Query\, Inc. \nhttp://www.innovativeq
uery.com/\n\nGreg Bardwell is a software executive and entrepreneur. He is
currently the founder and CEO of his second software company focusing on kn
owledge management and discovery tools being sold as an enterprise applicat
ion. He was the founder and CEO of an e-Learning company which he ran for 1
2 years. Prior to this he worked for six years for NASA and the Naval Resea
rch Laboratory. Greg holds an advanced degree in physics and a degree in co
mputer engineering.\n\nHe has a talent for the innovative application of te
chnology to address problems in new and cutting edge ways. Years in learnin
g technology\, knowledge management and user interaction experience has led
to an expertise in the way people acquire and use information. This experi
ence combined with the extensive knowledge of the way the mind learns and u
ses knowledge has culminated in his most recent venture.\n\nGreg has extens
ive experience in software development and marketing to consumers\, educati
on institutions and enterprises. He has led the development of numerous awa
rd-winning products. Building and running his business from the ground up h
as given him extensive experience in product positioning\, marketing\, part
nership development\, and building sales channels.\n\nRockville\, MD 20847

SUMMARY: MD/NW DC VB@Upper County Comm Ctr.\, 8201 Emory Grove Rd.
DESCRIPTION:The MD/NW DC Volleyball Meetup Group\n\nUpper County Community
 Center\, 8201 Emory Grove Road\, Gaithersburg\, MD 20877\n301-840-2469\n\n
This is a weekly\, recurring activity\, only impeded by inclement weather\,
annual two week cleaning closings and acts of God\, as it were. So\, PLEAS
E\, come out and play....\n\nEven though only a few bother to send RSVPs to
this site and scheduled events\, there is a regular crew of 8 to 24 player
s who show up\, week after week after week. So\, come on down and join us.
We have fans to keep players cool\, music to move to and general camaraderi
e\, all in all. If you have an iPOD\, bring it. We can hook it up to my spe
akers and blast away some tunes to play volleyball to.... \n\nSo\, check us
out and see if we are up to your personal playing standards. What have you
got to lose\, except a couple pounds and some sweat? You might actually ha
ve a good time...........\n\n\nHope to see you all out on the courts.......
..........our courts\, that is.\n\nNow\, if I could JUST find some players
to go out afterwards for a couple cold ones to rehydrate\, THAT would be lo
vely. There is a Peruvian chicken place about a mile away at Flower Hill
Shopping Center. IF we show up\, they will stay open later. THey close ar
ound 10 PM\, usually. The food is quite good. More RECENTLY\, we found a
new post volleyball watering hole\, Dunmor's Tavern. They are located les
s than a mile distant from Upper County CC. They have great fries\, excell
ent chicken wings\, decent Reuben sandwiches\, hearty salads\, decent selec
tion of beers\, half a dozen or more TVs for sports fans and pleasant waits
taff. They WILL stay open a bit later once they know that we are coming in
. Usually\, their kitchen closes between 930 and 10 PM. The bar stays ope
n until around midnight during the week.\n\nNOTICE: The house management wa
nts us to stop about 9:20 PM\, + or -\, to break it all down and put them a
way. We need to be out the door before 930 PM. Also\, ALL of you need to do
your part\, take down the nets and fold them\, carry the VB standards into
the store room\, lower the BB backboards\, lock the two storage rooms...\n
\nPLEASE pitch in...............or the house mgmt. will move to curtail our
  time there\, earlier and earlier.\n\n\n\n\n\nSteverino\n\nGaithersburg\, M
