Let’s take a nice relaxed hike around the Occoneechee Speedway Trail in Hillsborough and get a history lesson at the same time.\n\n\nLevel of Hike: Easy – Great for beginners and those lo oking for more of a relaxed hiking pace and makes a nice social hike.\nTerr ain: Flat\, mulched surface. Trails through woods are smooth with only a few roots here and there.\nFootwear: Sturdy tennis shoes will do.\nDistanc e: About 2 miles.\nDog Policy: Dogs are allowed on the trail\, but must be on a leash no more than 6 feet and only 1 dog per person. And please be p repared to pick up after any "accidents" on the trail.\n\n\n\nFor those of you just getting started (restarted) in hiking\, history buffs\, or those w ho prefer a more scenic relaxed pace\, this is the hike for you. In additio n to going around the mulched speedway track\, we will be going into trails in the woods.\n\nThis hike will be at a historic site under active preserv ation that contributed to the early days of NASCAR. We will be going around the mulched circular track and going into the woods to see the old score b oard\, the grand stand\, the ticket booth and a nice walk beside the Eno. T here are also signs that give information about the speedway’s history and details about drivers and entertainers that performed there.\n\n"The Histor ic Occoneechee Speedway Trail or HOST\, a walking trail through natural and cultural history. This 44-acre site was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. Three miles of trail will take you along the bank s of the Eno River where you’ll walk around the only surviving speedway fro m NASCAR’s inaugural 1949 season. The 1-mile oval Occoneechee / Orange Spee dway was active from 1948-68\, attracting the best stock car drivers and th ousands of spectators."\n\nThe hike should take about 1 -1.5 hours. We will meet in the parking lot.
