1959: An evening of Music, Poetry/Spoken Word, River to River Festival

Jun 26 7pm, Rockefeller Park Music, Poetry/Spoken Word Co-presented with Battery Park City Authority All ages welcome

1959 celebrates a turning point in contemporary American culture, music, and spoken word artistry. Grammy Award-winner, Terri Lyne Carrington brings together jazz greats including Antonio Hart, Gregoire Maret, Jeremy Pelt, Chris Potter, tenor sax with Pat Metheny, Steely Dan, and others to perform new arrangements of music including Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue, John Coltrane’s Giant Steps, Dave Brubeck’s Time Out, Charles Mingus’ Mingus Ah Um, along with music of Billie Holiday and Sidney Bechet, as well as poetry and spoken word pieces from the Beat generation.

Terri Lyne Carrington is a Grammy Award-winning drummer, composer, and bandleader. Carrington has enjoyed an extensive touring and recording career of over 20 years with luminaries like Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Al Jarreau, Stan Getz, and more. In the late 80s Carrington gained recognition on late night TV as the house drummer for the Arsenio Hall Show, then again in the late 90s as the drummer on the Quincy Jones late night TV show, VIBE. Carrington’s Grammy-nominated debut CD entitled Real Life Story (1989), featured Carlos Santana, Grover Washington Jr., and Dianne Reeves, among others. Other solo CDs include Jazz is a Spirit (2002), Structure (2004), and More To Say… (Real Life Story: NextGen) (2008). Carrington’s produced and collaborated on songs with artists such as Gino Vannelli, Peabo Bryson, and Dianne Reeves, among others. She was commissioned by the Atlanta Committee for the 1996 Olympic Games to create the song Always Reach for Your Dreams. Other notable examples of Carrington’s work include Herbie Hancock’s Grammy Award-winning CD Gershwin’s World, where she played alongside Joni Mitchell and Stevie Wonder. Carrington’s 2011 album The Mosaic Project won a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album. Her most recent album, Money Jungle: Provocative in Blue (2013), is a much-anticipated homage to Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, and Max Roach. I always enjoy meetups that Vatrice coordinates and rarely are there any mishaps. Despite us starting off in the wrong location, we still had a great time hanging out and getting to know each other. I look forward to attending some upcoming meetups.

Had fun meeting everyone last night. Even though we didn't see the whole concert I had a great time. I got to meet other women in a comfortable low key atmosphere which was perfect for me. Enjoyed hanging out on the grass and listening to Valerie Simpson.
I also understand how frustrating it must have been for the lady who was trying to hook up with us...I know the feeling...but since it was just an honest mistake maybe she can try it out again...just a thought..
Thanks Vatrice for a great time and conversation helping everyone get comfortable!

in addition if we are going to discuss cost, let me list my expenses. Meetup is not a free organization and I choose to pay $19 a month to host this meetup, because I enjoy organizing the group. I choose to take the NJtansit train to the city and pay $10 roundtrip fare and $5 for a roundtrip metrocard fare. Theres more affordable ways to get to nyc from NJ but I choose the form of transportation I would like to use.

Wen i enventually arrived to the correct location, i found the event to be nice. How can sitting next to a pier listening to Valerie Sinpson sing and others recite poetry be a waste? Im human and i made a mistake by listing the wrong location but Im glad I attnded the event and met two new people Karen and Ianya and hung out with 4 cool ladies.
