Simenon: The Train

Against all expectations Marcel Féron has made a “normal” life in a bucolic French suburb in the Ardennes. But on May 10, 1940, as Nazi tanks approach, this timid, happy man must abandon his home and confront the “Fate” that he has secretly awaited. Separated from his pregnant wife and young daughter in the chaos of flight, he joins a freight car of refugees hurtling southward ahead of the pursuing invaders. There, he meets Anna, a sad-looking, dark- haired girl, whose accent is “neither Belgian nor German,” and who “seemed foreign to everything around her.” As the mystery of Anna’s identity is gradually revealed, Marcel leaps from the heights of an exhilarating freedom to the depths of a terrifying responsibility—one that will lead him to a blood-chilling choice.

“There is no false note, not one word or sigh or smile which strikes me as anything but unavoidable. This is not a writer’s romancing story of a little man caught in the war; it is the unknown history of many little men in that vast war.”

I am glad you enjoyed The Train, Norrie. I'd be curious to know your thoughts. Maybe we can still chat about it...Would you like to come to Crema around 5:30 pm prior to the next meeting?

Enjoy! I have bought the book - and picked it up two or three times to read, but can't seem to get into it. Proust may well have ruined me ;). Hope you have a lovely discussion and evening tomorrow and everyone enjoyed The Train.

Bo! Ha! Liked your comments - I think!?! Always good for someone to have your back, but then again, parts of your comments may indeed have been a joke at my expense, honestly I am not sure?!?! :). Either way, found your post very funny indeed! Yes, Proust has ruined all other works for me at the moment! Cheers!

Thanks, Troy. I think I'm just standing on the sidelines and envious of your plunge into passionate love for a writer to the exclusion of all others. Enjoy that rush of immersion.

Great discussion as usual...saw things in the book I would not have understood without the group dynamics. Arlinda rocks as usual!

Did you know that Simenon was once declared by Life magazine the most prolific writer ever? Did this affect the quality of his work? We'll discuss...

PS. Let's meet in front of Crema Cafe at 6 pm. We'll then head over to the Radcliffe Yard and have the meeting outdoors, weather permitting.
