Install-fest

This will be a hands-on, one-on-one-ish workshop for setting up Drupal.

We'll briefly go through process for installing Drupal (probably both 6 and 7,) then help everyone who wants to install Drupal on their local machine or remote server, (bring a laptop if you've got one.)

Those comfortable with the install process will help those new to it.

I'll recommend using MAMP, WAMP, or XAMP to those who want to quickly set up the Apache/MySQL/php stack on their laptop; (our time is better spent troubleshooting Drupal instead of your system!)

Once we get everyone installed, we'll discuss and help with common next steps for your site: basic configuration, modules, and themes

If you don't have a laptop to install on (or a web host to use,) we'll help you set up a free site on Drupal Gardens.

There's a group in the room til 3pm, so we'll start at 3:15.

Please bring $1 to cover Meetup.com costs.

excellent installation information and basic sutep instruction for a drupal website.
One big hurdle overcome. Drupal 7 overcomes many of the issues of installing drupal 6.

Richard: thanks, I've added VirtualBox as a platform possibility on this topic.

I think what you suggest actually deserves a separate meeting as part of a discussion about methods for staging, deployment, and provisioning.

I do want to keep this workshop relatively low-level: the primary goal to ensure that everyone has and/or can set up a Drupal site on their local machine and/or remote server. This will provide our group better scaffolding to build upon for future work and discussion.

also: using virtualbox for setting up development machines. this is crucial when, say, developing/staging on a mercury stack, or in general when you want to develop in an environment that replicates your production environment

I would love to install it on my puter. Have these great books that I can't put to use unless I have it.

John from New York (remember him from our first meeting) said that his group has taught about multi-installs of Drupal 7 recently.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
