Updating Drupal

Keeping Drupal core and contributed modules and themes up-to-date is vital for keeping your site secure, stable, and current.

Some types of upgrades are painless but others can be daunting and time-consuming.

We'll talk through different sorts of Drupal upgrades and how best to approach them:

  • Minor core updates
    • Updates release schedule
    • How-to/demo
  • Major core updates
    • Schedule
    • What's involved
    • When do you need to upgrade to 7?
    • Simplified how-to/demo
    • Strategizing your update to 7
  • Contrib module updates
    • How-to/demo with D7's built-in updating
    • How-to/demo with FTP
  • Contrib theme updates
  • Updating with drush

And if there's time:

  • Upgrading with a version controlled deployment strategy
  • Upgrading your custom modules to a new major version

Stuart: This would be awesome and perfect -- to show how you went about it, successfully, and leave an opportunity for others to suggest how they might go about it differently, or ask the group questions on how a different setup might need to deal with it.

Sounds like you have a busy week ahead; I don't want to put too much on you, but if you think you can find some time to set up that demo site and review your process, that would be stellar.

Jeff: I recently updated Drupal 7.9 to Drupal 7.10, and I was thinking I could share the process I followed. Our Cleveland Drupal attendees could see what I did and suggest a better method in the future. I believe I correctly followed all steps (it was successful), but would love to hear from others. I hope to take the backup I made of the database in version 7.9, and install it as second copy of the site. I expect to have a busy week, but would like to help if no one else is able.

Hey Richard, if you know you can make it and want to take responsibility for one of the main bullet points above, that'd be great. Preferences?

I would be glad to, but I have spoken far too much before...

We're shooting for around 5 presenters/facilitators. Anyone up for taking on a piece of this? Preference to folks who have not presented before. You don't have to be an expert -- just willing to do a bit of studying-up on the topic and put together a framework for discussion. I, and potentially other folks, can help if you want a hand preparing a demonstration for any of these.
