Migrating Sites to Drupal

You've invested countless hours and agony into your current [non-Drupal] site.

What are some of the best ways for migrating your invested time and effort to Drupal?

This meet-up is for discussing methods for migrating existing sites and data to Drupal.

  • Bart McPherson will be demoing some screen-scraping scripts he wrote -- for getting data out of an existing site,
  • Richard Schulte will be presenting the Feeds module, and
  • Dennis Jarecke will be showing a php solution he wrote for importing structured data and saving as nodes.

The meetup is in the IS&T (Information Services & Tech) conference room on the 11th floor. There should be signs posted.

One last thing to add - I 'remember the days' when commerce kickstart in 1.x was very simple - which is why I downplayed its significance as a distbrution to one for testing/basic setup. Now 2.x looks very interesting and comes bundled with a lot of great modules! I would highly suggest checking out the 2.x branch http://drupal.org/project/commerce_kickstart

I have used it. It's nice if you are willing to spend the time on it or there is an existing migrate module that handles your use case (i.e. migrating content from a specific CMS like wordpress, typo3, etc.). If you are migrating from an existing custom CMS or a CMS that does not have contrib mappings already, you will likely need to write your own. They are very very simple to write though! There are plenty of examples in the migrate module.

Also, if folks are interesting in applying the patch for the physical fields module to use with feeds, check out this http://drupal.org/node/1372070 almost committed to physical fields module - just needs some testing!

Nice to hear about the different ways we could input data. I got a lot out of the other two talks.

I picked up some great tips (I wish I'd had some of the information about 5 months ago when I did a similar migration the harder way). Nice mix of information and people. I look forward to future meetups.

Does anyone know which room in Rhodes Tower we will meet in?

I can show my current Perl script for extracting specific divs from HTML. I have then been able to import the extracted data using the Feeds module.

Feeds is actually my favorite! I'm actually preparing a series of blog posts on, among other things, using feeds with openlayers and geocoder. I would be up for showing off wordpress_migrate and all of its features, including use of drush, but digging into migrate is pretty complex as it often requires custom php, and though I've messed around with migrate in that regard somewhat, I don't know it incredibly well beyond wordpress_migrate.

  • Jeff S.

We could use someone else to discuss importing with Feeds. I'm glad to do this, but would appreciate someone else stepping up. :)

Hey Richard, would you want to talk on the Migrate module at this meetup?

    May 15, 2012

  • Richard S.

I've had tremendous success with the wordpress_migrate module in D7, and the migrate module in general!
