The Past: Cedar Lee/Dewey's Pizza

Many of us loved "A Separation" and this is the latest film by the same director.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle: "The Past" is technically from Iran but will be received by most American audiences as a French film. It's set in Paris; most of the dialog is in French, and the female lead is a French film star, Berenice Bejo. Best known to us as the happy-go-lucky actress in "The Artist" and in France for light comedies, here she plays a woman coming apart. She is about to divorce a man she still loves and is involved with a married man whose wife has been in a coma for 8 months.

7:00PM MOVIE at Cedar Lee

Meet us in the lobby ahead of time, look for us in the theater, or catch up with us near the outer doors after the film.

9:30PM DINNER/DISCUSSION at Dewey's Pizza on Lee Road (approximate time)

We'll take a 2-minute walk to Dewey's....across the street.

Just in case you don't connect with the group after the film, proceed over to the restaurant and ask to sit at the "Movie Group" table.

Synopsis: An Iranian man deserts his wife and two children to return to his homeland. Meanwhile, his wife starts a new relationship, a reality her husband confronts upon his wife's request for divorce.

More remarkable filmmaking, IMHO. Iranian director Asghar Farhadi's latest, "Le Passé (The Past)," is brilliantly character-driven AND plot-driven. The direction is superb and the acting perfectly credible by all including three children. I will add this to Farhadi's "A Separation" as two of my all-time favorite films. Its slightly long two hours and ten minutes proves Ebert's contention that "No good movie is too long." Can't say enough about this masterpiece except, if you love great cinema, see it!
Starring Bérénice Béjo ("The Artist"), in French with subtitles.

An amazing film - a drama where each character's motivation is revealed in the style of a thriller. There are no evil charcters--all of them are trying to do the right thing...but somehow failing most of the time. Enjoyable and interesting discussion at Dewey's. Thanks to all who came.

Thank you again, Renu, for organizing. Probably would not have seen it otherwise.
