Gloria/Cedar Lee/ Lotus Thai House

Gloria

Gloria is a "woman of a certain age" but still feels young. Though lonely, she makes the best of her situation and fills her nights seeking love at social dance clubs for single adults. Her fragile happiness changes the day she meets Rodolfo. Their intense passion, to which Gloria gives her all, leaves her vacillating between hope and despair -- until she uncovers a new strength and realizes that, in her golden years, she can shine brighter than ever. GLORIA is Chile's official entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 86th Academy Awards (R), and stars Paulina García in a tour de force performance that captured the Silver Bear Best Actress Award at this year's Berlin Film Festival.

REVIEWS

"Gloria" is that rare work, a truly adult film. By its end, you want to cheer the simple act of living. Tom Long

This is a driven, indelible character -- like the women Gena Rowlands played for John Cassavetes -- and you fear her going over the edge not least because you suspect you'd follow her. J. R. Jones

I did like the movie. There was so much emotion that was unspoken but you could sense, especially if you are that woman of a certain age.

Susan, thanks for a great evening. After thinking about it overnight, I believe the film was quite good.

    Susan - thanks for organizing.
i liked the movie and (of course) the discussions.
i find myself comparing gloria to blue jasmine. both heroines are responsible for their own misfortunes, but gloria takes responsibility for her actions while jasmine is unable to cope let alone take responsibility. between the 2, i think gloria is the stronger movie, with more of a message about the pros and cons of freedom. i guess i need to see "the past" now for comparison...

The movie was so-so. It did not live up to it's excellent reviews. The company and conversation afterwards with everyone was excellent as always. Thanks for organizing Susan.

I loved the movie. I have been divorced since 2011 and I understand the perspectives of Gloria and the Rodolfo. I loved the complexity, the beautiful scenery, the music, etc. The food was excellent also.

I would have liked to join in on the conversation. The acting was great even if the storyline was a little light. Very nice film

The discussion and food was the best part of the evening! I'm sorry that I didn't get an opportunity to meet everyone in the group since we were larger. Next time!

The roads are fine and the forecast is occasional light snow with no marked accumulation. See everyone there. Ate at Thai place yesterday, meal was good.
