Grand Piano: Cinematheque/High Thai'd Cafe

Elijah Wood and John Cusack star in this highly stylized, Hitchcockian/De Palmaesque thriller about a young concert pianist, just getting over a debilitating bout of stage fright, who discovers a threatening note written on his sheet music ("play one wrong note and you die") just before a performance. Screenplay by Damien Chazelle, writer-director of Whiplashand Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench. "A pulse-pounding experiment in terror." -Rolling Stone.

I think group consensus was a low B on the movie. There were elements I liked - the suspense, the treatment of music as art vs mechanics for the composition, the artist, and the piano itself. I think the cinematography was interesting - the choice of shots, etc. I think the song may have been a tribute to Hitchcock's Man who Knew Too Much, with its climactic scenes in a concert hall. In the end, I wonder if the budget or the director's vision fell short, leaving holes and discrepancies in the plot and the character development. The dinner was very good, as was the company and discussion. Always nice to see new faces and repeat attendees. Alan - thanks for organizing.
