In the Family: Cinematheque with Director Patrick Wang / L'Albatross

Several weeks ago, the group saw a small Indy film (Little Rock) and met with the director afterward.  That was perhaps one of the best meetups we have ever done.  The movie was great, the conversation with the director afterward was even better.

"In the Family" just received an Indy Spirit Award nomination.  This is on top of a 100% Rotten Tomato rating from 6 reviewers.

We will be getting together with Patrick afterward.

6:45 MOVIE

Meet near the ticket area about 5 minutes ahead of time or look for the group inside the theater or meet us afterward not too far from where tickets are purchased. There will be a discussion at the theater afterward.

L'Albatross is a 5 minute walk from the theater.  Drop by for something light to eat.  Thanks.

Tips for improving your restaurant experience:

  • Print a map or enter the address in your GPS ahead of time.
  • Bring CASH to pay for your meal.
  • When you arrive, ask to sit at the "Movie Group" table.

A gay man is devastated when his partner dies suddenly and the dead man’s biological six-year-old child, whom both men were raising, goes to live with the dead man’s sister, as specified in the will. The forlorn lover struggles to make peace with the family and the situation. This first-time film by writer/director/star Patrick Wang was rejected by 30 film festivals before finally opening in NYC, where The NY Times called it “one of the most accomplished and undersold directorial debuts this year.”  Set and shot in Tennessee, In the Family is far from a stereotypical Southern melodrama; Mr. Wang is Asian-American, and his propensity for long, meditative takes and fascination with family dynamics echo the work of Japan’s great Yasujiro Ozu

"Mr. Wang's slow-reveal psychological drama isn't just a showcase for his excellent ensemble cast. Beautifully modulated and stylistically sui generis, "In the Family" is also one of the most accomplished and undersold directorial debuts this year."

If this is your first movie with the group, there is no fee to attend.

This group has been successful partly because members have a genuine interest in meeting fellow independent movie goers. We don't always know where to look for you, especially first timers.  Consider printing out the pictures of the attendees to help you find them easier.

We have multiple meeting places:

  • Entrance door to the movie in the theater hallway 5-10 minutes before the movie starts
  • By the entrance door or ticket office after the movie
  • Reserved table at the restaurant under the name "Movie Group"

We don't always sit together in the movie theater but if you see a bunch of people talking about good movies they have seen, it is probably us. Please join in. We are always happy to get new people involved.

In the world of Independent films, it is recommended that you check back a few days before the event to make sure the movie, restaurant, location or time has not changed.

The movie provided a rare and realistic foray into the emotional and legal pitfalls encountered by a gay parent striving to maintain close parental ties with his son. The movie was compelling and moving and afterwards we were treated with the rare opportunity to delve into a gifted Director's mind.

An unorthodox but highly entertaining film. It was great to be able to meet a great, up-and-coming director.

There are many redeeming characters and a unique plot line to this movie. It is not often that after 3 hours sitting down everyone stayed for the Q&A. If this topic interests you at all, see the movie. It was quite enlightening. And yes, it was long, but was a worthwhile venture.

Was a very good film. Long yes, but his explanation of why it was made perfect sense.
