First Position @ Cedar Lee / Lemongrass

First Position-synopsis:

Every year, thousands of aspiring dancers enter one of the world's most prestigious ballet competitions, the Youth America Grand Prix, where lifelong dreams are at stake. In the final round, with hundreds competing for only a handful of elite scholarships and contracts, practice and discipline are paramount, and nothing short of perfection is expected. Bess Kargman's award-winning documentary, First Position, follows six young dancers as they prepare for a chance to enter the world of professional ballet, struggling through bloodied feet, near exhaustion and debilitating injuries, all while navigating the drama of adolescence. A showcase of awe-inspiring talent, tenacity and passion, First Position paints a thrilling and moving portrait of the most gifted young ballet stars of tomorrow. -- (C) IFC

5:15 EATS Dinner/Discussion at Lemongrass--very short walk to the theater!

Update Note: The Lemongrass is able to do separate checks!

7:10 PM MOVIE at the Cedar Lee

Meet us in the lobby 10-15 minutes ahead of time or look for the group inside the theater or meet us afterward not too far from the ticket office.

Miami Herald:

Child ballet dancer and former journalist Bess Kargman brings a dancer's passion and insight to her directorial debut, illuminating the addictive magic and fierce demands of a ballet dancer's life.

Detroit News:

A number of the performances are plain stunning - Aran and Joan, in particular, seem born to move - and in many ways watching the movie is like watching a sporting event; there are winners and losers and favorites to cheer on.

Tips for improving the restaurant experience:

  • Let us know your dinner plans when you RSVP so that we can either save you a seat at the "Movie Group" table or plan to meet you at the movie.
  • Print out a map or enter the restaurant address in your GPS ahead of time.
  • We can't always split the checks so please bring CASH to pay for your meal.
  • If you don't see us when you walk in, ask to sit with the "Movie Group".

The $5.00 yearly fee (or $1.50 for one movie) goes toward charges incurred for using the MeetUp website. You can access PayPal (see link in left hand column) or pay your fee to the Organizer at the event.

In the world of Independent films, it is recommended that you check back a few days before the event to make sure the movie, restaurant, location or time has not changed.

Inspiring documentary of young hope and perseverance. These incredibly talented young dancers, despite physical pain and forfeiting of normal childhood leisure time, soldier on to achieve excellence. There is something here to take away for all of us.
