Ohio Secular Summit

Join Center for Inquiry Northeast Ohio (CFINO) in supporting Ohio Secular Summit 2013- an opportunity for secular Ohioans to air their concerns about our State's public policy directly to the offices of their respective State Representatives and Senators.

This will be a two-day event- on Sunday, Feb. 24 we'll be gathering at the Holiday Inn City Center (Capitol Square) for some appropriate talks and some socializing. On Monday morning, Feb. 25 there will be a 1-hour training session at the hotel and then off to the State House we go!

More details to follow... stay tuned!

Help bring Secularism back into the Statehouse!

This past campaign season put a big spotlight on Ohio, but for the national offices only. Our state congress members make policy we live by and pass laws that affect our daily lives. It's time to bring the focus back to the state level. It's time to introduce ourselves, as Secularists, to these lawmakers. Recently, the 130th General Assembly was sworn in for their new session. Let's meet with them and talk about what we, as Secularists, expect of them.

February 24th & February 25th Center For Inquiry Northeast Ohio Presents:

Ohio Secular Summit 2013

Join us for an afternoon of speakers, including:

Gary Daniels, Associate Director of ACLU Ohio, speaking on "Empowering the Individual in the Political Process"

Sarah Moglia, Campus Organizing Communications of Secular Student Alliance speaking on "The Unstoppable Secular Students"

Meet with your State Congress Members during prescheduled appointments to lobby for laws based on science and reason and not religion.

Attendance is FREE, but please note: REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.

Please register so that we may accommodate everyone.

See you there! :)

This was a fabulous experience. Sunday: Monette had a great lineup of speakers for us, including Sarah Moglia of the Secular Student Alliance & Michael De Dora of CFI. All attendees learned a lot! Monday: Michael primed us on lobbying for an hour or so, then it was off to the Statehouse! Our appointments went very, very well, I think... overall very positive. We introduced ourselves as not only "secular Ohioans", but atheists. The reps we talked to didn't seem "taken aback" at all, but seemed to be very interested in what we had to say. One offered up their own views on religion in general, which was a nice surprise. It was indicated that they hadn't been approached in this manner by freethinkers before. I could go on- but I have to say great job Monette on initiating this, and I'm REALLY glad we took part! :)

Thank YOU for all of your help. Wouldn't have happened without you.

Yes, the speakers were phenomenal. I am working a letter to Ron Lyndsay about how much Michael De Dora did for us.

Monette, thanks so much for putting on this event, and a second thsnk you to both you and Mark for all the work you did in such s short amount of time! This was excellent, and I for one learned a lot about lobbying and how to approach either a representative, a Senator, or their aides. I think we really educated some of these people about who we are, and the fact that there are a lot of us out there, and the numbers are growing. I think our aide was very surprised to hear all about it :-)

What great testimonials we have, here!

Hearing you guys had such a positive experience makes it so worth it! Thank you so much for participating, and bringing snacks, and procuring coffee, and, and, and. :)

That was incredible. I would like to thank Monette for putting the fire under my butt to actually speak to a rep. We should have been doing this a long time ago. And we should continue to do it in the future.

I've called Nickie J. Antonia for the last four working days and left two messages and still can't get a hold of her. I may just go to her house.

That's disappointing. Send your home address and preferred phone number to me and I will make some calls as well. Maybe we can stir something up.

I may only be able to make it Monday. What time does the one hour training start?

    February 13, 2013

    • Monette R.

We're beginning at 9:00 to make sure everyone gets training before their appointments start.

Monette has informed me that Michael De Dora, Director of Public Policy for CFI Transnational, will be joining us at the summit!

    February 12, 2013

Marni & I have an appt. at Senator Turner's office at 11:30am, and also Representative Budish's office at 2pm.

Do we have a common platform that we're all working from? Or are we just making an appointment and expressing what we think should be changed as individuals?

    February 8, 2013

    • Monette R.

We will have an outline of topics for you to discuss while there. For the phone call, I suggest the generic topic of a secular public policy. So far, there isn't a bill we need to be concerned with. But, I haven't been through the whole list of pending bills, yet. :)

I just schedule a meeting with Representative Roegner's office at 11:00 AM on the 25th. Anyone else in her district is welcome to join me or schedule your own appointment.

Please let us know when you have scheduled your appointments!
