National March Against Monsanto CLE

I thought there might be some interest amongst us for this. It's a national effort with a couple hundred cities gathering people to protest Monsanto's chemical monopoly over are food in the name of big corporate personhood. I thought we could join the protest in the afternoon, if anyone wants to do a little shopping at the market earlier, this is a good reason to go down there. Then maybe a bit of lunch somewhere nearby. Lots of good restaurants.

The FB page for the event is here: https://www.facebook.com/events/288332071300711/

Photos now posted. Demonstrators were still out there as it was going on 5:00, lining the curb of W. 25th St. There had to be over 200 people in attendance and we were told our group was bigger than the one in D.C.

Damn Sharon, you got some great shots. You even made me look good!

My voice is a bit horse today. It was a good turn out.
It amazes me the number of people who are unaware of Monsanto, their market share of corn and soybean seed distribution, the modifications of those seeds and their intense desire to maintain that ignorance. Sharon, thanks for sharing your sign. M. Orel

It was fun marching with you, Mark. Thanks for going and for holding the sign when it inconvenienced me!

Anybody get pics? Would've liked to attend, but had a prior obligation.

Oh, such a pinnacle of despare - i'm in a little enviro group wayout on the east side, and NONE of us seem to have enough interest in being there. Also i happen to have a highly unwanted feral cat successfully caged (for the first time in over a year), and now must decide what to do with him. It's just good to know at least SOMEone will be there representing those of us against Monsanto!

Russell sorry you couldn't attend. About the cat, can you have him neutered and release him back outside?

Great turnout at the rally this afternoon. What happened to you, Maude? Thanks for organizing anyway as I would not have gone otherwise!

Ok, according to the organizers' page, we should meet at the corner 1:45 pm. The event is 2 to 4 p.m. and there will be prizes for the most creative signs. I will make a sign tomorrow morning but I can't decide what I want it to say yet. Anyway....

How about our little group meets up at about 1:30 in front of the Market Avenue wine bar, which is just two doors in back of the square? I imagine the most convenient parking will be at the West Side Market. Let me know your thoughts. Personally, I am already dying for an Everything Cookie from Maggie's Vegan Bakery.

Yikes! Last minute homework assignment - the pressure is on. And Maggie's is never open when I've been in the area so I really need one of those cookies too. See you around 1:30.

I'll be with you in spirit :-)

I will be there in my thoughts, enjoying the lunar eclipse, while ziplining in Hocking Hills, Ohio. Have a fresh organic vegetable for me, would ya?

Issues related to the 'Monsanto Protection Act'

    http://rt.com/usa/protection-repeal-act-monsanto-444/

    Excerpt:

"Deep within the nearly 600-page spending bill, Section 735 includes language that lets biotech companies that experiment with genetically-engineered and genetically-modified crops test and sell lab-made products even if legal action is taken against them.

“The provision would strip federal courts of the authority to halt the sale and planting of an illegal, potentially hazardous GE crop while the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) assesses those potential hazards,” dozens of farmers wrote the House of Representatives before the bill was passed in March. “Further, it would compel USDA to allow continued planting of that same crop upon request, even if in the course of its assessment the Department finds that it poses previously unrecognized risks.”"

I am a big fan of Monsanto. that company makes incredible chemical and biological products. Monsanto's products have brought vast improvements to agriculture. I am just stunned at some of the amazing products this company has released in the last few years. Maybe I"ll come so I can be on the other side of the march. I know some really smart people who fall for the treehuggers' emotional claims even though they are way too much chemistry and biology to know that they are baseless.

In any case, Jessica, I've studied the science and you are not going to change my mind. But by all means, schedule a meetup or FB event for a counter protest that day.

      2 · May 17, 2013

    • Suzy W.

Jessica, what exactly do you think Monsanto "does better, "does it better than its competitors?" "Labeling genetically modified food is unethical"? Do you think people have the right to know what they are purchasing to eat? Yes, I do have a lot of questions.

      May 17, 2013

  • Russell S.

Sorry Mark - coulsn't get your point as that link didn't work for me. Jessica - i'm kind of flabbergasted with your comments. Are you directly on Monsanto's pay role as a propagandaist? ....Ok - just for right now, totally disregard all the huge negative reports about legal/legislative and health and environmental issues connected with GMOs (which everyone certainly should learn of and make their own judgements on) - ..... HOW DARE YOU say that we should not be able to easily find out what kind of food we are buying! We bleeping well should have perfect rights to know every intimate detail about our food if we choose to. Do you want to keep going down this road right to soilent green? ......There - somebody needed to say that. I didn't want to wait around too long just hoping somebodyelse would.

I'm hoping the FB page for this will give more specific instructions soon, like, how long the protest will last, whether there are suggested sign slogans, etc.

    May 16, 2013

  • Marni T.

I'm all for this protest. I can't stand Monsanto!

Thanks for suggesting this for a meetup! I can't be there unfortunately, but think it's pathetic that Americans choose to be so ingnorant on this issue (and too many others actually). At least i can give this link for some good PDFs to print and hand out to those who wany to be less ignorant: http://www.responsibletechnology.org/. Rus

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
