Life, The Universe, and Hot Dogs

The Institute for the Science of Origins at Case hosts FREE physics-oriented talks the fourth Tuesday of every month at the Happy Dog. Been doing this for over a year and I just discovered it last month and am anxious to start attending some of them. Thought it would be interesting, besides, if you haven't been, the hot dogs are awesome and the vegan dog is even more awesome!

The title of next week's talk is below-I know what mitochondria are, maybe it has something to do with the physics of what we eat?

The ISO FB age is here: https://www.facebook.com/iso.origins

And speaking of Joe LaManna ... This coming Tuesday, August 27th at 7:30 p.m. we are thrilled to welcome to the Happy Dog ( ISO Fellow Joe LaManna for our August installment of "Life, the Universe & Hotdogs." Joe will tell us about

"Oxygen, mitochondria and why it is a dog eat dog world"

So come, have a gourmet hot dog and some tater tots, choose from an eclectic collection of more than 75 domestic, craft & imported beers from far-flung places, and listen with rapt attention to Joe. — at The Happy Dog.

I found the talk interesting and some of our CFThinkers presented some good questions to the speaker. The Veggie sausage dogs and numerous toppings were delicious too.

Did not like that one had to go to bar to get drink. Strange venue for a science talk, but all in all, a good time!

Got there. Interesting talk, saw a few of the CFT contingent! I was up front by stage.

Hi all, and a special welcome to the several first-time CFTers who are joining us tonight. Some thoughts....

I intend to get there by 7:00 at the latest. I intend to grab a table on the left side of the bar as far near the front door as possible, as this area would be closest to the speakers. The tables there mostly accommodate four people each. If anyone else can get there a little early to try and grab one for our group, that would be fantastic.

For those who haven't met me yet, I look like my picture. I also am wearing black and white plaid pants and a black top. If you are new, make sure to say howdy! If you're not new, make sure to say howdy!

I have some kind of delusion that we will snag a bunch of tables all together but if we have little groups of us spread about the place, it's all good.

    See you there!

I sent you a reply on FB, but basically, I think it best that as individuals get there-if anyone is early, try to grab a table on your own and wait for the rest of us to arrive. So, I will get a table, you will get a table, etc....

I will probably go. How's the parking situation?

    August 24, 2013

    • Maude

There is a small free lot on the other side of the side street (same side of Detroit) but if it is packed, there is free parking on the street after 6 p.m. I've never had much of a problem finding a spot on the street within a block of Happy Dog.

It's supposed to rain that night. I may not be able to attend. I HOPE I CAN.

The Happy Dog event page does list this as being upstairs and yes yes yes yes yes! We need to get there early to get a table or two. I've never been to Happy Dog when it was uncrowded at around dinner time. Scott-what time do you recommend?

Maude, will this be downstairs in the "Underdog" where the debates are? Yes, the Vegan Field Roast hot dogs are delicious and you can't go wrong with that long list of toppings to smother it with! I even bought them for home after trying them there!

I've been to several of these talks and they've all been upstairs. We should try to get there early to reserve a table near the stage, otherwise it can be very hard to hear the speaker over the people talking at the bar.

The Happy Dog is one of my favorite jaunts. They have an excellent beer selection and their hot dogs are only 5 dollars and come with your choice of up to 50 different toppings for free... even if you choose all 50! I highly recommend the tatortots and choose several free dipping sauces. Oh, and I love the field roasted veggie dog... and I'm a carnivore, so you know they're tasty :-)

I have to confess I haven't been impressed with most of the lectures I've been to. They are not the same quality and caliber as the monthly Science Cafes at the Market Garden Brewery in Cleveland. But it's not as crowded, the prices are better, the food is more fun, and if you get bored, there's always the pinball machines in the back :)
