National Day of Reason and Apostasy (and Prayer :)

Haha... the fellow in the yellow shirt thought for a moment that we were part of the prayer rally :)

Join us on Public Square for our 4th annual National Day of Prayer counterpoint, which coincides with the National Day of Reason and also our 3rd annual Jay D. Gardner memorial National Day of Apostasy.

The first Thursday in May once again marks the government-endorsed National Day of Prayer. And once again, the handling of NDP events nationwide has been left to the exclusively conservative Christian National Day of Prayer Task Force. In order for any NDP observance to be registered, the registrant must affirm allegiance to the God of the Bible and Jesus Christ (Note: this language was easily visible in past years, however this year it is hidden unless one registers as a website User).

All that aside, the constitutionality of the National Day of Prayer is dubious at best. The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) won an unprecedented victory in 2010 in which the NDP was ruled to be unconstitutional, only to have the decision overturned a year later.

We'll gather on the periphery of the south quadrant of Public Square, as in other years. Signs are of course optional, and we'll have some FFRF "nontracts" on hand to pass out to those interested.

*Note*- Annie Laurie Gaylor and Dan Barker of FFRF made the suggestion (at last year's FFRF convention) that it would be most effective to have a good presence at the Statehouse in Columbus, if a Day of Prayer observance is held there. There are groups around the Columbus area who could provide good presence there, but some of us might want to make the trip down to provide additional support. More details on this at a later date.

Those of us on the square will probably have lunch in Tower City afterwards. See you there! :)

P.S.- The fellow in the yellow shirt suddenly realized he had posed with freethinkers... :)

Really good! Though the weather was a lot warmer last year, the Prayer Day crowd was twice as big this time around. A LOT of people stopped by to talk, both passerby and people from the prayer rally. A few were a tad antagonistic, but then again they probably thought we were antagonizing just by being there. It was a real pleasure to meet Peg and Sarah!

My cell is[masked]-5821. Parking: unfortunately it'll be very difficult to find free street parking. Recommend bring lots of quarters, or use one of the lots along W. 3rd St. (Probably about $8 to park at those.)

Signs: please keep them in the vein of what our gentle protest is about. Keep in mind that the Christians have every right to obtain the permit to hold their prayer gathering on the Square. But the fact remains that the National Day of Prayer itself IS government endorsement of religion over non-religion. Plus, every year NDP events across the nation are basically hijacked by Evangelical Christians thru the NDP Task Force.

Sorry I can't make this one. I will make sure to inform the diversity group where I work about this...again....doesn't ever seem to make it on their Cultural Calendar along side of the Day of Prayer.

This is also the May Day; perfect choice of date. Religion is the opium of the masses.
