Let's get this party started! Lake Erie Boat Float/Potluck Picnic

UPDATE: When we tried to go to the Whiskey Island exit off of I-90/2 West, there was a Detour sign. We're not sure why. But if you are coming from the West, the Detour takes you to E. 45th Street. We don't know if this will still be in effect on Saturday - there's really no signage or anything other than those signs, which is annoying.

Let's have a great potluck, and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine (hopefully) at beautiful Edgewater Park! We'll park in the main parking lot, near the walking trails, closer to the west end of the lot, where the concession stand and bathrooms are. We'll have balloons so people can find us.

Please bring a dish to share, bring your dogs, bring your kids, bring your kites, your frisbees, whatever! Let's get a big crowd for this event - it'll be a blast!

The concession stand was still open last year, don't know if it will be this year, but bring cash if you're feeling optimistic :).

The boat float starts right at 10, and it's really short-lived but fun. Get to the park before 10 if you want to see it! It's sponsored by Earth Day Coalition, and the boats are made from recycled materials.

Please refer to the map (click on the link). I tried to place the marker almost exactly where we'll be. Keep in mind there are two concession stands. We'll be closer to the western end of the lower Edgewater Park, not the one right off the Whiskey Island exit. You will have to turn down the middle drive and go to where the parking lot is in four sections. Look at the map and you'll see what I mean :) When you turn down the middle drive, it really looks like you're driving on a sidewalk, but it is actually a road!

I made a green bean salad. I can come for a while. I'll bring two chairs. Do you need any utensils, condiments?

    • Marni T.

Beth, that's great. We need spoons please :-) I think we're good on the condiments. It's stopped raining...yay!

This was a great picnic! As predicted, the day cleared up and was perfect for a get together. But after 11 hours, I was exhausted LOL... sorry some missed an awesome day. It was great meeting Alastair, his lovely kids, their lovely dog, and Elizabeth and Nicholas, and of course seeing all of our friends :)

What a pleasant day at the Lake! I found it easy to get there and stake out a few tables under the free shelter and then go see the very creative homemade boats made of recycle materials while it was barely still drizzling. It was mesmerizing to watch the few people on surf boards from early on until sunset! Food and conversation was great and so relaxing. Thanks to everyone who came out...it was so good to see you and meet some new faces!

Despite a grey drizzly start it turned out to be a wonderful day. Great conversation as always. Thank you everyone for bringing stuff to share! I think Julie's deviled eggs vaporized in under a minute :) It was a real pleasure to meet Elizabeth, Nicholas, Alasdair & family, and Eric. 5 of us stayed into the evening and were treated to a spectacular sunset.

Anyone planning to come and wondering what to bring... I have plenty of regular hot dogs but no veggie dogs. Can someone bring a pack or 2 of vegetarian tubular grillables? I will reimburse - either regular veggie dogs or tofurky brats, etc are fine.

  • Marni T.

Ok, thanks to Suzy, we have two tables in the covered area by the concession stand

  • Marni T.

Ok, we're going to play this by ear. It looks like it's supposed to rain on and off all day, but it's not raining by us now, so I'm going to head out pretty soon and get to the spot.

    2 · September 6

Looks like it could storm in the morning, so we may want to locate near the covered picnic pavilions - IIRC, there's one near the concessions area close to the beach.

Also bringing some chips & humus. I drove there earlier today from the west side via 90 following my GPS directions. The DETOUR signs are clear to follow and it takes you to West 45th and then around to get back on the shoreway where the entrance to the Park is very clear. Then, go straight at the stop sign on that little road Marni mentioned and on around to the big parking lot. I am thinking i will try to get there by 9am at the latest...I want to see the boats!

Please keep checking this site and emails as I'll be sending updates and hopefully a video of exactly where to go to get to this spot. Hopefully this detour won't be too bad. Also, if you click on the EDGEWATER PARK - LOWER BEACH AREA link above, I placed the pin on the map almost exactly where we're going to be.

We're bringing hot dogs. I don't remember there being grills at this particular spot, but we have a tiny grill to cook some stuff on. If anyone else would like to bring any portable cooking appliance, that would be cool :)
