New Volunteer Group Orientation with HandsOn Northeast Ohio

PLEASE READ REQUESTS BEFORE RSVP'ing

This is for everyone who has said they want to do more in the community. It would be great to get a good showing here, especially since Jen is taking her time to come out and do this for our group.

In order to participate in HandsOn Northeast Ohio, you must attend a new volunteer orientation. We would appreciate it if people could attend the volunteer orientation and sign up with The Cleveland Freethinkers team - that way, we can log more hours, and get recognized in the community!

PLEASE create your account on the HandsOn NEO website first: http://www.handsonneo.org/HOC__Volunteer_Registration_Page

This is a fast hour, very easy, there's really nothing to it except showing up and listening to the presentation. They have asked that at least some of us commit to volunteering for a project or two soon after the orientation. We will need to pick the project(s) from their calendar (see below), and people MUST commit to it - the HandsOn NEO team will have us on the roster. You can also let Jen know at the orientation which project(s) you'd like to volunteer for.

Here is the volunteering calendar: http://www.handsonneo.org/HOC__Volunteer_Opportunity_Calendar_Page

If you absolutely cannot make it to this orientation, you MUST change your RSVP.

If you want, you can also sign up for the National Days of Service, which doesn't require attending the volunteer orientation, but c'mon, it's one hour! :) If you do sign up for a National Day of Service, please let us know which one.

National Days of Service include: MLK Day (January), Global Youth Service Day (April), National Volunteer Week (April), Earth Day (April), September 11th (September), Make a Difference Day (October), and National Family Volunteer Day (November).

Let's plan on eating from 6pm to 7pm approx., and then Jen Palmejar-Takaki will give the presentation afterwards.

I'm looking forward to participating in these charitable endeavors with fellow freethinkers. Jen's program was enjoyable, as was dinner at Si Senor!

I enjoyed Jen's presentation and she is a very organized and informative speaker! Sounds like there are many volunteer opportunities for us to choose from! Enjoyed the conversation, laughs and good food afterwards, at Si Senor Mexican Restaurant.

This appears to be a great opportunity for volunteering, although I'm not a big fan of the Cleveland Foundation, but I digress. I'm into the volunteer activities offered but am totally unclear on how this is of any benefit in getting CFT as a group some kind of recognition or calls attention to CFT. Can someone explain that part?

On the site, it says that the Cleveland Foundation is a sponsor, along with St. Luke's and one other local outfit that I forget right now. So, that's why the comment. I don't have a problem with much of what the foundation funds, but mostly with the org's deep political ties and related corruption issues. But, as long as I'm on the end of something that is taking their money, that's ok.

Hadn't noticed that about the sponsor, thanks.

You should be able to join the team from your page, but I tried it out just now and for some reason the CFT Team isn't showing up on the list of public teams at the moment; it was there before because Marni and Sam were able to join. I'm contacting HandsOn now for help.

Maude, I am not sure either and am going for information only at this point. Most of my extra time for volunteering is with my Mom and her fellow residents at the Alzheimer's home at this time. I would love to work with animals as well.

Jen will set up her laptop at Panera, so that anyone who wasn't able to register on the website before orientation day can do it then. If you can register before the meetup, please do so. This helps to speed up the process.
