What's so good about Atheism

At this meetup we will explore the many reasons why we are more than happy to be religion free. I have many reasons. I hope you will bring your own reasons to this meetup.

Hope to see you there. Sam

Greatest meetup ever. Just kidding. I'm just saying that because I was the host. But really, that was a great meetup. Thank you all for coming. And it was good to see Beth and Beth and Greg and Richard and Elizabeth and Mike. Welcome aboard.

I forgot to Welcome Lori as well. Welcome Lori, it was good to see you.

That was a rousing good time. It's good to have an opportunity to express myself. We should do more similar things like that. But for a bunch of atheists that meetup seemed dangerously close to the feeling of a religious revival meeting (not that I've ever been to one of those). I wonder, though, do "you people" depend too heavily on science as a means of deriving meaning in life?? ;-/

We all have our own unique way of looking at life.

Oh, heavens! I'm afraid that you're inferring, that I'm implying, some sort of a-priori meaning external to ourselves. Not - at - all. Each person finds his own meaning in life as part of the process of just growing up. And you've seem to have done a pretty good job of it from what you wrote here and what I see.

Occasional derailment (perhaps for the next one a volunteer will wield some sort of gavel-device), but it really didn't matter. Sam's list bought forth a lot of varying perspectives, and many good points were made. It was great to meet some newer members, who participated in fine fashion. Plus, it was fun :)

Fantastic discussions! Everyone was involved, and the input and conversation was great. Wonderful seeing Richard again and meeting Elizabeth, Lori (sp?), Beth and Beth!

This was my first time with this group, though I know many people from other places (I went to high school with Dale and Wendy) and it was truly great. And I look forward to the next meetup.

Sam did a great job of leading the discussion and many people shared their ideas! More good conversation and laughs at Applebees afterwards!

“Science investigates; religion interprets. Science gives man knowledge, which is power; religion gives man wisdom, which is control. Science deals mainly with facts; religion deals mainly with values. The two are not rivals.”

Atheism -is- good. But all religion not bad. Mistake many an Atheist make is to equate "religion" and "theism". Many religions more than just that one thing.

I'm not sure how to measure the good and bad of religion. To have any bad at all makes me call bullshit on religion. And as religion goes it's not the good or bad that I question, it's the real or not real of the god they claim that I would question.

Dale, good point and maybe we'll end up examining that further at this meetup.
