We will be in the Chestnut Enclosed Shelter. WE WILL NOT BE OUTSIDE! This place is heated, with a fireplace - there are no addresses in this park, because it's in a valley. Please see the directions below. Anyone who attended our picnic earlier this year will be familiar with this general location - just keep in mind we're in the enclosed shelter this time more towards the front, not the open pavilion in the back.

I figured since we did the hat party last year, let's do another "themed" party and this is what I came up with. I think it would be fun to have a theme every year. We won't be doing prizes this year, though.

We'll have karaoke again (although one of the rules is that we have to keep music on low volume - we'll see how much we can get away with LOL), and it will be a potluck. We are asking for donations to help with the cost of the pavilion rental, which is $200, non-refundable.

Get those weird, wacky and wonderful Christmas sweaters ready! I am particularly partial to the ones that light up :)

Very nice party at what was really a good venue considering the
weather. Enjoyed meeting new people hadn't done karaoke for
    a long time.

So sorry I missed this event but the roads (I-271) in Medina Co. were not in good shape when I left. Traffic was moving at 35 mph when I finally crossed into Summit Co., so I surrendered and turned around at rt 303. This is actually the first time I've been out of my driveway since then.

I would vote to have another one of these at the end of the winter. I would volunteer to help set up the place as well. And help clean up, on the condition that it's not a snow storm day. My car was spinning all over the place on the way home, so I'm glad I did not stay until the end. Snow made life difficult, but it was very beautiful at the park. I will remember the calm beauty of the winter nature in the park and the coziness of the inside. This solstice celebration was a great idea, and very well executed. The Freethinkers' Edgewater picnic was the first Meetup I've ever attended, and it proves to have been the right choice. This group is the most productively fun group by far.

The meetup was a lot of fun. Met some interesting people. Good food, lots of cool pictures. I had a good time. Me, singing to karaoke. I haven't done that in at least 100 years !!!.
I will catch up with you guys

Many thanks to all of you who braved the lousy weather to get together! The roads were still somewhat hazardous when we left (around 10:45) so I hope everyone got home ok. As usual, you CFT'ers really came through- thank you for bringing great stuff to share! Great singing by Dana, Kristen and others. And thank you all for your generous donations... you've paid for our next venue rental, we're all set! :)

Thank YOU Mark and Marni for a great party. You guys always put in a ton of hard work and effort to make these events wonderful and run flawlessly. Kudos to you both, again.

      2 · December 15, 2013

    • Mark T.

Couldn't do it without the help of all of you awesome CFT folks! Everyone pitches in for these events in fine fashion- you people are the greatest. Btw, everyone- thanks to your generosity we have enough in the group "kitty" not only for a venue rental, but enough to cover grillables for all at our upcoming 7th anniversary picnic (or, venue rental + pizza for all if we happen to have a larger event before then).

      1 · December 15, 2013

  • Marni T.

Thank you, everyone, for braving the weather and sharing in that wonderful room and making this party so great! You are so generous - thank you for all the $ donations!, the food was amazing and plentiful as always, and thank you for being such great CFTers, partiers and friends :) a special welcome to Dana and a special shout out to Livingston - our party was the first EVER meetup he has attended, so we're honored that he chose us :) Thank you, Ray and Lisa for the "Pinfidels" bowling pin and the bowling game. As some of you found out last night, that is the name of our bowling league that isn't yet LOL - we would love to start one for those interested. Now for some housekeeping. We have a couple of items and need to find their owners: a brown-handled knife
    a silver water bottle

We look forward to having another party in this awesome room, and seeing everyone again soon for more fun times!

I looked at that vid. Amazing! I love it. I wish I could find someone like that to whom I could be an apprentice or assistant, who I could learn so much from.

Wouldn't that be amazing? I like to learn things and can imagine being apprenticed to almost any artisan. I even tried to teach myself how to make gloves!

Here, it's my neighborhood that determines whether I can get out tonight. So far the roads are not plowed and it would not be unusual for no plowing until the snowfall stops. That would be sometime tomorrow. Right now, I think I'm stuck here.

    December 14, 2013

  • Linas K M.

Heated with a fireplace vs heated, with a fireplace? Punctuation is key! I have a friend getting over a cold - does this mean there is heat apart from the fireplace? :)

The roads are slushy but fine. The shelter is awesome!

Determined to play a bit of Freethought/Blasphemous Pictionary this time. We have a decent-sized whiteboard & wipe-off markers.

    December 14, 2013

    • Morgan

Great idea. I just drew a Blasphemous Picture on my xmas card to my aunt and uncle. Now I'm inspired to draw more! Does this version of Pictionary involve the holy book of some major Christmas-themed religion by any chance?

Whatever happened to an ordinary celebration of the Winter solstice?

    December 26, 2012

    • Keith B

Wikipedia describes about 40 different types of observances for Winter Solstice, listed alphabetically. But apparently it was customary to slaughter all the cattle so they would not have to be fed over winter, when food was scarce. I dunno about you, but I'm not prepared to do that tomorrow. And I don't think too many of our members would go for it anyway. We'll have to choose an alternate way to observe. :D http://en.wikipedia.o...

From the Weather Channel website: "Periods of moderate snow expected, especially Saturday morning." Since we have the building 'til 10pm, keep in mind that you can come later in the day if it's nasty early on. Please everyone keep an eye on your local conditions, and we'll post weather/road conditions as they are around North Chagrin here in the comments.

The storm now has a name (Electra). Oh-boy. But the forecast is 3"-5" for Cleveland, which is pretty normal for Cleveland this time of year (or at least how I remember it was for years until we had a few "green" winters).

I'm making Black Bean Chili w/Cilantro Pesto and Molasses Bread - both vegan. I also have a 250-pak of napkins and will bring cups for the chili. Hoping that someone will be interested in singing show tunes with me as my intended partner has canceled :-(

    1 · December 13, 2013

I'll bring snow. If someone wants to bring cups and syrups, we can make snow cones.

Or better yet, I'll bring a vegetarian dish or two.

    5 · November 28, 2013

    • Morgan

Well, the Indian place was out of what I wanted, so I will fall back on three different Indian snacks. One sweet and sour, one spicy, and one... mystery! All three seem to be vegan and gluten-free, although some unfamiliar plants are listed. I'll bring the ingredients to let people with dietary requirements make the call.

      December 13, 2013

Dale and I are bringing Iced tea and cole slaw tomorrow. We will also bring some small plates and cups.

    1 · December 13, 2013

  • Mark T.

For anyone wondering what to bring for the potluck- just about anything is good. Main dish, side dish, dessert-type stuff, snacks. Beer & wine are allowed as long as it is consumed within the building (and in plastic cups). We're bringing a few 2-liter bottles of soda pop, but a few more wouldn't hurt.

    December 12, 2013

    • Mark T.

Marni & I are bringing an assortment of stuff- chips & dip (but if someone wants to bring an extra bag of chips, that's cool), a few different spreadable cheeses & cracker-size salami, etc + several different types of crackers, few boxes of cookies, urn of coffee, plus more (probably including a main dish as of yet undetermined).

    Tentative depending on the weather.

    1 · December 12, 2013

  • Mark T.

The good news: it's supposed to be a relatively balmy 32 degrees on Saturday (it's an arctic 16 degrees at the time of this writing) and winds are supposed to be relatively light. The not-so-good: there is a nearly 100% chance of snow, but they're not saying how much. We're going early to make sure it's nice & toasty-warm in the building.
