Happy Holidays fellow freethinkers!
I want to know, partially for my own sake, just how should Atheists/Agnostics partake in the holiday season? For the last three years I have abstained from celebrating Christmas as an Atheist, but now I am starting change my mind. I happen to love this time of the year. I love the festivities, the cheerfulness, the happiness, how everyone celebrates with the people they care about. I think that this tradition of coming together is a great one.
Problem is, the "official" purpose of the holiday is to celebrate the birth of Jesus. As an Atheist, I am not about to revel in the inaccurate jubilation of the day that a Jewish messiah was supposedly born on. And I know that the entire season/tradition was taken from the roman traditions of the time, and that people have always celebrated the coming of the winter with a feast and merriment; my dilemma, is that I do not know how to celebrate or what to celebrate this year. All I know is that I do want to celebrate something this year. And next year, and every year after that.
Let me know what you think, how you celebrate , and whether or not we should come up with our own holiday.
