Interesting.  Of course our species, like all species, demonstrates variance.  Variance in height, weight, intelligence, strength, etc.  Survival of the fittest is something of a misnomer for two reasons: first, the idea is survival of the fittest for a particular environment.  Fitness is not so much physical strength as the ability or luck to reach reproductive age and then reproduce. Sexual selection enters into the equation also.  The male peacock, for example, gains no basic survival advantage by his coloration--if anything he is more vulnerable to predators.  But he gains a sexual advantage as the hen is attracted to the males with a coolest plumage.

Our welfare system has its flaws, of course--most human systems have their flaws.  But since teamwork and cooperation and mutual assistance are marks of human survival mechanisms (since we lack long sharp teeth  and the speed to run down prey or avoid predators), in times of plenty it is advantageous to help those in need.  It is when times are tough--or the particular environment is difficult--i.e. arctic or high mountain or desert--that we find the appearance of what we might call cruelty toward the afflicted or helpless or otherwise disadvantaged.

There are arguments for and against what you propose.

I flunked an essay in high school in 1987 - I wrote an essay about how all men are not created equal, biology proving it,
that our welfare system was endangering our society by encouraging the end of "survival of the fittest".

I was very careful to include my belief in all people needing equal rights and opportunities and equal chance of
being the best they can.

Just odd that years later someone would make a movie of what I predicted in 1987 lol.

  • Democracy can't work. Mathematicians, peasants, and animals, that's all there is — so democracy, a theory based on the assumption that mathematicians and peasants are equal, can never work. Wisdom is not additive; its maximum is that of the wisest man in a given group.
        Robert A. Heinlein - Glory Road (1963)
Democracy is a poor system of government at best; the only thing that can honestly be said in its favor is that it is about eight times as good as any other method the human race has ever tried. Democracy's worst fault is that its leaders are likely to reflect the faults and virtues of their constituents — a depressingly low level, but what else can you expect?
Also from Robert A Heinlein

Sadly, I have no better solution than democracy to offer, but I see Heinlein's points.

According to IMDB.com, the movie IDIOCRACY was smothererd by 20th Century Fox, possibly because of its anti-corporate attitude.  The company put in no marketing or advertising money.  Was this due to some other institution putting pressure on them? No idea, but then we are going into conspiracy woo woo land. The reviews seemed to be positive from those who managed to see it.

However, it was not "blocked".  The studio decided not to promote it.  Suspicious perhaps, but I would want to know more!

There's a movie that was blocked from theaters. Idiocracy. Mention the FDA or FCC once and they go ape shit. lol

Doesn't look like this movie is being blocked by anyone other than the budget of its distributors.  It is a documentary so it is automatically not going to get the screen play and the advertising that the new Batman or James Bond flick will get.  This thing opened in one theater and gained about $30 before it moved into other theaters and has earned about $145k so far.  The decision to show it in a limited number of theaters is most likely a business decision as is the lack of advertising.

Statist media.  Ok, maybe.  More like complacent and lazy media.  Too easy to depend on "unnamed" speaking on condition of anonymity" type sources than to do actual legwork and investigative journalism.  AND the free perqs (brats, booze, and broads) help to keep the media in line!

But blocked? I really don't think so.  I think $ or lack of $ would be a bigger factor.  Am surprised that none of the big Conservative GOP contributors hasn't stepped forward to boost the documentary, but again, it is a documentary.  Unless your name is Ken Burns or Michael Moore, it is tough to get a doc made and then into theaters.  I know this from personal experience!

This certainly isn’t the first movie that’s been blocked from having publicity or blocked from general viewing,  in one way or another.   It would help us tremendously along our paths to the truth if only we would be able to know all points of view and the reasons for them;   then we would be better informed to choose our own personal set of beliefs.    Most people seem to have no real understanding of how controlled the mainstream media is.   It is not liberal media,  as it’s popularly called,   it’s really so much more accurate to call it statist media.   I keep feeling that no matter how I try to explain this,  there’s no way anyone will understand how manipulated our information sources are unless (s )he has already begun to realize it.   We just happen to be exquisitely lucky right now.   This may end up being a very narrow window in all  of history with the amazing tool of the internet,  when we can see directly into countless points of view from almost all of humanity.    But how many of us are taking real advantage of it?   Instead of making efforts to understand the many opposing opinions,  most of us use the internet only to search out info that make us feel more sure our own view of reality is correct.    This it one of the worst tragedies of all time!    There are reasons for the huge variety of views people express  -   and there is also a wide range of goodness (or badness)  of those reasons.    Those are the sort of things I like to devote my research to.     Maybe I could say my “Holy Grail”  is to finally determine who in this world has the most true views  -   which ofcourse makes me consider the viewers’  virtuousness in expressing them -   then I try adopting and adapting to  the good ones as I go,   because,   as the old saying says;  if an honest person discovers he has been mistaken,  he will instantly cease being mistaken,  or he will cease being honest.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        If you continue thus far along my opinings  you might also like to know some of my suggestions for learning of the wide variety of views out there.   Welll,    almost anything on youtube where Congressman Dr. Ron Paul speaks,  and many of the youtubes about him are informative.   I do also try to see the vids with titles that seem to be in opposition to what he says BTW.   If you have time for any full length type movies try this website: http://www.trueworldhistory.info/.  but do read and heed the intro on that site before diving into any movies and please do donate what you feel is right if you can there.     If you do want to watch the Thrive movie featured there,   it would be preferable to use the Gamble’s  own website where the full movie can also be seen for free:   http://www.thrivemovement.com/home.   Speaking of things being blocked -  now here’s something interesting;   two tries to find the real Thrivemovement website would only go to several other strange sites.   Maybe you’ll think my views are awfully slanted now.   but all I have to say to that is,  of course they are.  I only see things from my perspective because that’s all I can do.   ....part of which is that there are only two mistakes one can make on the path to the truth;  one is not to go all the way,  and the other is not to begin.   I only hope that everyone would try harder to MORE CLEARLY see the views from their own perspective.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    Rus

I'm planning on seeing the movie today. It's interesting that there have been efforts to block this information.

Interesting....

"LOS ANGELES – The documentary “2016: Obama’s America,” which paints a bleak picture of the world should President Obama be re-elected, has been in theaters for a couple of months. But Yahoo! Movies, one of the biggest online movie listings sites, does not list its theaters or showtimes. While its easy to find out when and where the likes of “Expendables 2” and “Sparkle” are playing, in addition to independent films like “Sleepwalk With Me,” there are no listings for the Dinesh D’Souza-directed “2016.” In fact, Yahoo! Movies appears not to have the documentary listed in its database at all.....Yahoo! Movies did not respond to our request for comment. But the movie's director and producer did.

" 'It is particularly disturbing to see efforts to block this information from reaching the eyes and ears of the American people,” D’Souza said. “It's really important to thwart this effort at censorship and regulating the free flow of information in this country. It is part of the American character to question and reject authority when it threatens freedom. I hope every American will reject this sad attempt and watch the movie for themselves and come to their own conclusions.' "

..."Meanwhile, the film, now in 169 theaters, shows up on showtime searches through Google and Moviefone. The documentary came in 13th at the box office over the weekend, with a per-screen average of $7,391, the fifth highest average of any film over the weekend."
