Since we're seeing this thing as it was 420 million years after the big bang, it would seem to be logical that at THAT point in time it was closer to our current location- but I guess we can't think of it in that way?

This was covered as well in Dr. Evelyn Gates's recent lecture to the Case Science of Origins Scholars Lecture Series.  A distant galaxy seen as it appeared more than 13 billion years ago.  For more detail on this technology and lensing technique, Evalyn Gates's book EINSTEIN'S TELESCOPE is highly recommended!
