Hardly a stupid column at all.  Author may be conservative in his politics and social views, but is obviously not a loon.  His comments made sense and while I do not particularly agree with his politics, I do agree with his primary theme: that secession is not a good or viable option for those whose candidate lost in the last presidential election.

There IS a difference between conservatism and loonism, though many loons wish to be seen as conservatives.

No, the column isn't stupid- although the author treats it with "kid gloves", he's pointing out in so many words that all this posturing about secession is stupid, which it is! :)

Nonsense.  Without a Christian base, the Germans who approved of, went along with, and participated in the Holocaust, would have had no reason or motive to do so. Regardless of Hitler's personal internal beliefs, the German people (and many other Central and Eastern Europeans were pre-disposed by their religious beliefs to hate and persecute the Jews.

Genocide may have been invented by ancient pagan regimes, but the act was refined and made sacred by the Abrahamic religions.

And yes, I have very little respect for Dinesh and the "teachings" of the Roman Catholic Church.  This is based on my own study of them!

I know that Catholics and Dinesh are not popular with all of you, but, this is persuasive, based upon my study of this issue.

What i think confuses some is communist leaders in the past denouncing religion (as the opiate of the masses etc) when they were denouncing religion because it was competing with the state for control of their populance.  The state wanted to be the only voice of authority.

Yep.  Here's a really nice list from Douglas Theobald via PZ Myers.

What always gets me is that people seem to think that the Stalinist Russia and Maoist China had no religion.  That couldn't be further from the truth.  The state WAS the religion, complete with unquestionable dogma, ritual, and all the other accoutrements.

Agreed!

It looks like the original piece was published not in a newspaper but on a right-wing Spanish website back in 2004, using the pseudonym-

And if the Hitler-as-Christian thing becomes a bone of contention, there is this... haven't cross-referenced it yet, but Austin Cline isn't known to publish B.S.:
