Re: [humanism-174] Check out The Riddle of the Gun : Sam Harris

I learned that (automatic ban) recently, too. I had mentioned to someone that I didn't know anyone with a fully automatic weapon outside the military, and they said, "Duh, because they're illegal." :)  It was also interesting to me to learn what qualified a rifle as an "assault" weapon. Like I said, not a gun nut, so I'm learning quite a bit, too.

I agree that it wasn't nearly as well thought out, but it's still important to read, I think, if just for the discussion about prevalence of mental illness in our society.

Not nearly as well thought out as Harris' piece.

Michael is obviously misinformed or he would know that "automatic" weapons are highly regulated by the NFA of 1934. That's why in the last 78 years exactly one has been used to commit a murder. And that was by a police officer

"Specifically, I mean outlawing all automatic and semi-automatic assault rifles for anyone who is not in law enforcement or the military."

A reasonable look at an often unreasonable debate.
