I have to add here that Madalyn Murray Ohare(the person that established American Atheists back in 1963) had a whole lot to do with the reason I have become an outspoken Atheist. I owe a large debt of gratitude to her.

I'm pretty sure that AA was the first organization in the U.S. to explicitly brand themselves as atheist. In the latter half of the 19th century, during the so-called "golden age of freethought", there were freethinker clusters scattered across the nation but they ranged from anti-theist to UU-like. As Susan Jacoby points out in this interesting excerpt from Freethinkers: A History of American Secularism, Universalist churches sometimes served as the established venues for "heretical talk"-
