I enjoyed the debate, but of course Desouza continues to offer misleading arguments and inane ideas!  Offering up long-dead pioneering scientists as evidence was annoying and I wish either Shermer or Krauss had addressed that point.

Until Darwin, doubters had no viable alternative explanation.  And in the 15th and 16th century, doubters could be put to death for doubting or questioning church doctrine.

Yes, Newton was a believer.  He lived in the 1600s and 1700s.  HE HAD NO CHOICE.  And he also believed in alchemy.

Can't disprove the existence of God, but science makes Him unnecessary at best, a repugnant anachronism at worst--like a vestigial tail!

The NYT comment is silly.  Both sides were trying to make good arguments.  They are smart seasoned talented debaters.  The MIT professor was very articulate.  Prof Krauss was very convincing.  Often, he knocked the ball out of the park.  I saw Susan Jacoby on ABC Sunday Morning talk show today representing atheists.  She was excellent.  Roger Ailes wrote a book on the successful use of the TV interview process in conveying one's message, called, You Are The Message.  Whether or not she read his book, Susan did it right.  Impressive!

What is the intended symbolism in the 'ig' part of their Intelligence Squared logo?

I have to add here that Madalyn Murray Ohare(the person that established American Atheists back in 1963) had a whole lot to do with the reason I have become an outspoken Atheist. I owe a large debt of gratitude to her.

Here she is on the Phil Donahue show in 1970:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XEnj-ZVltU

Congratulations to American Atheists on their 50th anniversary- they're holding their 50th annual convention this weekend in Austin, TX.

I'm pretty sure that AA was the first organization in the U.S. to explicitly brand themselves as atheist. In the latter half of the 19th century, during the so-called "golden age of freethought", there were freethinker clusters scattered across the nation but they ranged from anti-theist to UU-like. As Susan Jacoby points out in this interesting excerpt from Freethinkers: A History of American Secularism, Universalist churches sometimes served as the established venues for "heretical talk"-
