"Self-righteous absolutism is the conviction of the ideologue that his beliefs and code of behavior are not only right, but everyone else’s are wrong."

The essential psychological element required to subscribe to a religion is a suspension of skepticism and the questioning of holy texts.   I know of no religion that does not assert that it represents the truth and that other faiths are misguided at best and evil at worst. Not all religions require self righteous absolutism but those that do open the door to atrocities.

Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.
