Yes, the overall trend is what is important. I understand the island tipping congressman was being ironic and dead pan and it didn't work. But the Republicans have definitely set themselves up as science deniers, and at first it may have been a fringe, but now it has infected the entire party.

This isn't good for any of us, Democrat or Republican. It would be nice if the opponent was at least qualified.
