RE: [humanism-174] better memory

Hi Debbi, yes the "quote" is false but unfortunately believable! The Borowitz link was posted earlier on in this thread, but things can easily get confusing with these longer threads (who is replying to whom, etc).

I am confused, I tried chasing down  articles reflecting Lamar Smiths doubt about meteors and was only able to come up with this:

Andy Borowitz is a comic/satirist/funny person.... so did I miss something here? This is a link to another article:

Hi Vinay, and welcome to the forum! And I agree :)

Holy shit! The article about the remarks by Lamar Smith (R-Texas) concerning the planned hearings about the existence of meteors sounds like something right of the pages of The Onion. In fact, I had to take a second look just to make sure it wasn't.

This notion of holding legislative hearings to determine whether meteors exist is just batshit crazy. There may be some intelligent republicans out there (I sure hope so), but you'd never know it from the ones that occupy the halls of Congress. And if there are some rational republicans out there, would you pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease start speaking up and regain control of your party. It is a nest of loony lunatics. This shit ain't funny anymore. It is downright scary.

Randy

OK, here's another one.  They supply us with this stuff daily - it's
certain some of them will end up being misquotes but so so many of
them are real!

Whether it be from hardcore atheism or simply religious doubt, the common threads in this group are issues related to non-theism; and the modern Republican Party has been absolutely abominable on these issues!

On the issue of Humanist chaplains, the entire House GOP voted unanimously in disfavor of them (joined by 44 Democrats, unfortunately). Not one single Republican in the U.S. House was willing to grant nonreligious members of the military the same access to a person who could help look after their well-being, morale, and offer moral support, as religious members of the military have. Meanwhile, 150 Democrats (77% of House Dems) voted in favor of the Humanist chaplains or counselors or whatever they could be called.
