Lots of juice (i.e.the electricity generated by and inside a MAJOR lightning strike), has to go somewhere, attacks particles in upper atmosphere above the thunderclouds, and gives pilots and occasional ground observers a cool show!

I never heard of this and after reading it, I still didn't understand.  So, I went to NASA and got more information.  


If anyone can shed more light on this, I would appreciate it.  It is interesting, but I guess it is still a bit confusing for me.  Love "layman" terms. ha
