Very good points. Certainly, religion, or religious beliefs share a part of the blame (if there is blame to be assigned), but only a small part.  As you said, rational thought does not always go hand in hand with adolescence!  Kids are also pretty good at hiding their emotions--or at least camouflaging them, especially if others in the family are trying to deal with their own grief.

I suppose that one should try to emphasize to children that Dad or Mom (whichever is deceased or gone) loves you and while they know you miss them they want you to grow up and be all that you can be--or something along those lines!

That’s OK Sheri.  Unfortunately, I have just recently experienced the exact same situation for real.  A very close friend of my wife and daughter just lost her son who committed suicide at the age of 17.  This boy too had lost his father who passed away in a truck accident when the boy was 8.  It is hard to say how this trauma impacted his life over the years but this past Saturday, he chose to take his own life, stating to his mother just before carrying out the act of shooting himself right in front of her, that he missed his father and wanted to be with him.

The family is devastated.  I cannot say that this was his sole motivation or that there were no other contributing circumstances, but he clearly was of the belief that he would see his father again.

I certainly do not judge the mother or family in this case.  I can only grieve with her and hope to help her cope with this second loss in her life.  When I first heard of this from my wife, there was no thought in my mind that this was a misguided act of a teenager because of his belief in God or an afterlife in heaven.  For all of you who have had teenagers, we know that rational thought is not always a strong point at that age.  I think in most cases that have any similarity to this, there is probably a lot more going on that we do not know.  We should not rush to judge the ones who’s lives are directly impacted by it.
