This whole post is sad. Sometimes there is nothing that can be done or said to someone from stopping them from committing such a very sad act.

Wow, that is awful, Greg- our condolences to the family & friends.

Yeah, unfortunately the story about the girl is not so far-fetched. Around 15 years ago someone close to me committed suicide, at least in part motivated by religious ideas. And with a terrible twist- my friend, age 43, decided to take his 7 year-old son with him (by carbon monoxide poisoning). As our friendship was due to playing together in rock bands, I hadn't even known that this man was at all religious nor was I aware of any deep-seated problems.

I don't know for sure if it was in one of his suicide notes (there was one for his bandmates, but we never had the chance to view it), but after the fact it came out that he had expressed that he thought he and his son would be together in Heaven, safe from the bad stuff in this world.

That’s OK Sheri.  Unfortunately, I have just recently experienced the exact same situation for real.  A very close friend of my wife and daughter just lost her son who committed suicide at the age of 17.  This boy too had lost his father who passed away in a truck accident when the boy was 8.  It is hard to say how this trauma impacted his life over the years but this past Saturday, he chose to take his own life, stating to his mother just before carrying out the act of shooting himself right in front of her, that he missed his father and wanted to be with him.

The family is devastated.  I cannot say that this was his sole motivation or that there were no other contributing circumstances, but he clearly was of the belief that he would see his father again.

I certainly do not judge the mother or family in this case.  I can only grieve with her and hope to help her cope with this second loss in her life.  When I first heard of this from my wife, there was no thought in my mind that this was a misguided act of a teenager because of his belief in God or an afterlife in heaven.  For all of you who have had teenagers, we know that rational thought is not always a strong point at that age.  I think in most cases that have any similarity to this, there is probably a lot more going on that we do not know.  We should not rush to judge the ones who’s lives are directly impacted by it.

Oh, Hitch put it best; Religion Poisons Everything.  This is a great example.  How horribly sad.
