Kudos to those who worked to defeat this bill, including Governor Brewer.

What is truly annoying is the fact that alleged Christians would feel the need to push for a law that would permit them to discriminate against an entire group of people.  It would bug them to have to bake and sell a freaking cake simply because they had to put two male figurines on top?

In a retail store, how do you know that the customer you are speaking to is gay or not?  Some are obvious. If Johnny Weir walked in, you would know right away.  But what about Ellen's wife, Portia? She does not look "butch".  And what about Tom Cruise?  All we have on him is rumor and gay wishful thinking.  Gonna refuse to serve him because a lot of gays WISH he was available?  Would Jesus cry if I baked a cake for Ellen and Portia?  Would Jesus laugh and giggle if I threw Cruise out of my store?

At least with blacks, we could identify them easily!

What an obscene religion!
Tim

I just realized what I wrote Susan. Kudos To miss Brewer for vetoing this unnecessary bill. As I wrote to our reps., we already have religious freedom in this country.

That's what could have happened in Arizona, but Jan Brewer vetoed it. I suppose we should keep our heads up, because the report said there was legislation like it in Ohio too, although I don't think it will go far here either.

As far as that section of the law in effect that was quoted, I'm not sure of the context or how it was meant to be applied, but it would appear that it didn't apply to discrimination in the market place, or else they wouldn't have pushed for this law.

They went to far this time and caused divisions within their own party, were losing business support, and of course, the Super Bowl was on the line. It would seem the majority of businesses don't want discrimination. It's bad for them. Nobody will want their businesses in places like Arizona where such a thing could happen. The backlash was pretty amazing.

The thing that bothered me too was that I was pretty sure that others were piggy-backing on this one, hoping to be able to discriminate based on race, gender, etc if their ancient writings told them that's what they must do.

OTOH, there is a segment that thinks that private businesses should have the right to discriminate for any reason at all, but I think a pretty strong message was sent that this democracy won't support such a notion.

Then the court in Texas just struck down an amendment making same-sex marriage illegal. TEXAS. and UTAH, OKLAHOMA, KENTUCKY! This change is coming crazy fast and it's being fought in the religious states. As I said before, this battle has already been decided, now people will have to get used to it. I'm kind of stunned at how quickly it's moving.

So as long as it’s in the name of religion I can discriminate against a gay person, or an Atheist. Now I wonder does that work with Islam also. Because I’m certain that they have a huge problem with christians. So are they allowed to discriminate against christians?

I don't know. It would appear not. I suppose it depends on context but that's just my best guess.

Isn't it already legal in AZ??

Section[masked](B) of the existing AZ code:
"Except as provided in subsection C, government shall not substantially
burden a person’s exercise of religion even if the burden results from a
rule of general applicability."
