I'm sure everything your saying here has some truth in it- yet I still maintain that smoking is a grossly exagerrated health risk, at least for some of us.
I averaged out my smoking to be a pack per day over 28 years, which may be a liberal estimate- then I did an interesting calculation:
 
1.75"= amount smoked per cig. x 20 cigs per day= 35" of cig per day.... x 365 days per year= 12,775" per year. x 28 years= 357,700 inches of cig smoked in my lifetime... divided by 12= 29,[masked] ft. of cig, divided by 5,280= an astonishing 5.645 MILES of cigarette smoked in my lifetime!!! And that doesn't even count the dope!! Shouldn't I have died awhile ago?
 
On the other hand, I do have bad leg circulation- so you Aunt's story does scare me a tad. But in my case, I believe it's congenital- my mom had absolutely hideous leg circulation, but she was never a smoker. All three of my sisters have it too. I'm sure my smoking won't help my bad circulation.
How can they be so sure it was the smoking alone that caused your Aunt's problems? Many factors can influence the hardening of blood vessels.
 
Shouldn't the ridiculous amount of CO we are exposed to every day cause bad blood oxygen levels anyhow? After all, if there were 100 smokers in your garage, all smoking with the door closed, what would happen? A little respiritory irritation? But if you ran your car engine for 10 minutes... all corpses?

P.S. If you haven't a BP cuff you can borrow mine although, it is the old kind requiring a stethoscope-which you can also borrow mine. However, it may be useful at our age to go get one of those $50 digital ones that don't require the stethoscope component (which generally makes you need a third hand, I find).
 
P.P.S. More pricey are pulse ox finger monitors, which can also be telling. They measure the oxygen level in your blood. If you have one of these gadgets, try taking your O2 first thing after a good 8 hours of sleep (which means you weren't smoking) then have a couple morning smokes and take it again. You might be astonished. The diminished O2 in your blood means that all your organs, arteries and BRAIN are receiving less than optimal oxygen supplies needed to operate at peak.
 
P.P.P.S If you don't die of smoking-related lung disease, either cancer or COPD (I'd rather have the cancer-quicker and more merciful) keep in mind that the same way smoking hardened the arteries in my aunt's legs, they do the same job on the coronary arteries and a large percentage of heart disease is due to smoking alone, even in people with impeccable diets, exercise profiles, and lipid levels (like me-my lipids are beyond impeccable but my smoking can counter the effects of my fantastic lipids).
 
OH YES!!!! I forgot because it doesn't specifically apply to me, but it would certainly interest Marni! Were you aware, that men who smoke, have a higher incidence of erectile dysfunction due to the breakdown of elasticity of the vessels which occurs all over (my aunt's legs) including the penis???????
 
Honestly, as far as my medical writing experience has lead me, if you just need stress relief you would be best off going to the gym, even if you need to go before work, at lunch, and in the evening every day during your attempt to quit smoking. After that, actually, it appears you would be better off drinking a'm lcohol in moderation that is greater than the moderation of your smoking days-that would do less damage to your body than smoking.
 
Ok, I'm done. I know, I'm a smoker who is worse than a former smoker. Sorry, but not really
