Excuse to Code

This is our casual "Excuse To Code" meetup event. Shaker Launchhouse is kindly letting us use their space on Saturday mornings from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The purpose of this meetup is to give our members time & space to work on or share their projects away from distractions.

Want to brainstorm or ask questions of other developers? Want to turn up you headphones and code without family distractions? Maybe look for opportunities to collaborate, pair-program or share your latest prototype? Then hopefully Excuse To Code will give you those opportunities.

Well, I'm pretty excited to attend this. I have TONS of questions.... (lol!) Unity, 2D Game Development, Poser Pro 2012, 3D Modeling, and 32 bit sprite design/animation to be specific. ^.^ Yeah... Come prepared because I'm picking EVERYBODY'S brain that day. See you there.

Hard to say exactly where I'll be when this comes up, but hopefully I'll be working on one or more of the following:

-Wrapping up a character in Blender, for use in Unity. Said character needs a face and clothing modeled, textures, rigging and a run cycle.

-Creating a sample level involving said character exploring some ruins. Will need to model some generic street-scene type objects for this. Said level will involve rotating platforms each with their own gravity (or lack thereof); need to figure out how to approach this. Also need to figure out how this level can be expression of the character's story.

-Scripting for a the story mode of an unrelated 2d Unity project (Eddie -- I'll be happy to show you what I've got thee, how it's set up, etc.)

-2D character art for said project.

Last joking forward to meeting everyone! Hopefully I can learn a few new things regarding 2D game development on the Unity Dev tool. :)

Let's share our ideas for what we plan to work on, so we can see who else might be interested in collaborating.

I'll start: In my LD25 game, Bad Puppy, I wanted my humans to have variable gender, skin tone, and clothing color. To that end, I developed a "paper doll" system that would create the sprites people in the game, randomly coloring them, and compositing them at draw tmie. Unfortunately, the implementation is inefficient, with too many drawing calls, and while it runs ok in my native Windows build, it's too slow to run as an HTML5 game. I had an idea to build a sprite factory that would pre-generate a set of full-figure sprites in order to avoid the compositing and slow runtime, while still allowing all the variety and randomness that I had intended. But I never got around to building it. I think I can tackle it in a few hours, so it's a perfect Saturday project:)
