Cleveland will participate in the Global Game Jam 2012 event from 5:00 PM on Friday, January 27th through 5:00 PM Sunday, January 29th. The GGJ is a world wide annual event where teams of artists, coders, designers and musicians collaborate to build videogames (or boardgames) in just 48 hours based on a common theme.
A ticket must be purchased (for $12) through Eventbrite to attend.
No matter your skill level, you can participate. (Boardgames are allowed, or you could playtest for a team making a videogame.) You don’t need to have a team in advance (but it’s ok if you do). We'll put together the most sensible teams we can on the spot.
You must bring your own laptop and any software that you intend to use. (Laptops are preferred for space reasons. If you do bring a desktop, keep in mind that only wireless internet is available and so they'll need wireless adapters.)
LeanDog, an Agile development company here in Cleveland, will host the event for the full 48 hours. Participants will need to bring their own laptops and whatever software or technology they need for creating games. Participants also have the option to build “paper prototype” games using whatever supplies they wish to bring. A common theme, such as “evolution”, will be announced during the Global Game Jam Keynote which we will stream to everyone. Afterwards, we will pitch ideas, brainstorm and split off into teams and start jamming.
UPDATED EVENT INFO - Participants will be provided a pizza dinner during the keynote presentation Friday night as well as beverages and light snacks throughout the weekend. Participants are responsible for their own meals after that.
A ticket must be purchased (for $12) through Eventbrite to attend.

My first time at anything like this, and it was gobs of fun. (Exhausting, but gobs of fun anyway.) Can't wait for the next one!

Had the most fun that I can remember having in a long time. It was so great seeing what everyone came up with!

Wish I'd joined this group earlier and heard about this event. I'm a 2D cartoonist/illustrator and a 3D modeler, and it might be fun to provide art to some programmers.

Everyone that has purchased a ticket should have received an event update email that they should read.
We have confirmed that the event will be at the Burke Lakefront Airport which is right next door to LeanDog. Also, make sure that you use LeanDog's free parking lot. It is the left hand lane marked "Hornblowers" when you pull in at the lot booth entrance.

A few things to know: //There's still time to sign up. It's only $12 to join us for the weekend at LeanDog software (which is on a docked boat!), designing and playtesting and coding games in just 48 hours. //You don't need to have a team to sign up. We'll put together the most balanced teams we can on the spot. But if you do have a team established in advance it's ok. //Never made a game before? Contribute to your team as a playtester. //Games can be non-digital (boardgames).

I won't make it, but sounds like fun! I look forward to hearing about it in February.

Hello Jim, unfortunately due to security concerns we are not allowing non-participants into the event. I am hoping to have some live video streams going over Google Plus or Tiny Chat, maybe recording some video and a shared "post-mortem" during our February meeting. If you have any questions, just let me know through Meetup or here.
